Then find the app in the Play Store and install it. This option is not available on every Chromebook, and some apps may not work even on a supported model. If the app is unavailable, check its website for a web version or consider Linux software if your Chromebook supports the Linux development environment.
Check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps
Start in Settings: select the time area, open Settings > Apps, and look for Manage Google Play preferences. Google says that if this option is missing, the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. See Google’s Chromebook instructions for Android apps.

Before setup, update ChromeOS. On a Chromebook managed by a school or employer, an administrator may also prevent access to Google Play or block Android app downloads. If the setting is unavailable on a managed device, ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Google’s setup guidance and administrator guidance describe these limits.

- Update ChromeOS to the latest version available for your Chromebook.
- Select the time area, then open Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences.
- If the option is present, follow the on-screen terms and prompts to enable Google Play.
- Open the Play Store, search for the app, and select Install.
- Open the installed app from Launcher. Apps on your phone or tablet are not automatically copied to the Chromebook; download them again on the Chromebook.

Why an app may be missing or not work
The Chromebook does not support Google Play
If Manage Google Play preferences is missing, the Chromebook is not eligible for Android apps through Google Play. A web app or, where available, Linux software may still meet the need.
A school or work policy blocks installation
Administrators can restrict Play Store access or Android app downloads on managed Chromebooks. Contact the organization’s administrator to confirm what is allowed.

The app is incompatible with the model
Play Store availability does not guarantee that every Android app works on every supported Chromebook. Processor architecture can be a factor: many ChromeOS devices use x86 chips, while many Android phones use ARM. Apps that include native C or C++ components may behave differently across architectures. See Android Developers’ ChromeOS app compatibility guidance.
The app installs but has usability or permission issues
Review the app’s permissions in Android settings, and check whether it offers resizing controls if its layout is awkward on the Chromebook screen. Google explains Android app permissions and resizing on Chromebooks. When permitted, Android apps can access the Chromebook’s Downloads location; some apps with location permission may also use Bluetooth. Turning off Google Play Store erases Android app data and settings stored on the device.

The Play Store will not open or load
Google’s first troubleshooting steps are to restart the Chromebook, check the internet connection, update ChromeOS, and try its common Chromebook crash fixes. For Android app setup and related issues, see Google’s Chromebook help page.

Start with the task you need to complete, then compare the alternative’s features, offline support, availability on your device, and setup effort. A web or Linux version is not automatically a full replacement for an Android app; check that it supports the workflow you need.

Try the service’s website first
Search for the service’s official website and verify that it has the functions you rely on. A browser-based option can avoid Android compatibility problems, but feature coverage and offline access vary by service.

Use Linux for compatible desktop software
If the Linux development environment is available, Chromebook users can install compatible Debian packages, including with the terminal command sudo apt install. Google also documents adding GNOME Software/PackageKit as a graphical package interface. See Google’s instructions for setting up Linux and installing Linux apps.

Linux applications run inside a container sandboxed from other web pages, applications, and ChromeOS. Apps installed in that container share its permissions; USB and microphone access are not shared by default. Check the app’s requirements and the container’s access settings before relying on hardware features.
