Check your phone’s built-in battery-health screen or manufacturer diagnostics first. Some phones show an estimated remaining capacity; others provide only a battery status. Neither is a universal, exact measurement of how much energy the battery can store today.
What a battery-health reading actually tells you
A battery-health percentage generally estimates the battery’s remaining capacity relative to its original capacity. It is different from the charge percentage in the status bar, which tells you how much charge is currently available.

Google says Pixel capacity is estimated by the battery fuel gauge and that initial health values are based on lab results that may differ from the battery’s actual state. Apple also cautions that maximum capacity depends on use and charging. Treat a displayed percentage as an estimate, not a laboratory measurement. Google explains Pixel battery estimates, and Apple describes iPhone battery capacity and performance.
Cycle count can help put a reading in context, but it is not a capacity measurement. One cycle represents cumulative use equivalent to 100% of the battery’s capacity; several partial discharges can add up to one cycle. Battery aging varies with factors including temperature, charging behavior, use, and the individual battery.

Check battery health by phone maker
iPhone
- iPhone 15 and later, with iOS 17.4 or later: Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says this screen can show maximum capacity, cycle count, manufacture date, first-use date, and a replacement recommendation.
- iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14: Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to see maximum capacity and peak-performance information.
Apple’s design guidance is that iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; for iPhone 15 and later, the stated target is 80% after 1,000 cycles under ideal conditions. These are design targets, not guarantees for every battery. See Apple’s current battery guidance.
Google Pixel
- Pixel 8a and later: Open Settings > Battery > Battery health for status and estimated capacity. For cycle count and dates, open Settings > About phone > Battery information.
- Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold: If you need diagnostics, open Settings > Battery > Battery Diagnostics. This broader diagnostic availability does not mean every model shows the Battery health percentage.
Google describes Normal as capacity within normal limits and Reduced as remaining capacity below 80%; it recommends considering replacement when the status is Reduced. Google’s guidance says Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold are designed to retain at least 80% of initial capacity for about 800 cycles, while Pixel 8a and later are designed for about 1,000 cycles under recommended charging conditions. Google says Pixel 6a, the Pixel 7 family, and Pixel 8 and 8 Pro do not show Battery health status, even though these devices may offer Battery Diagnostics. Google’s battery troubleshooting guidance provides more information about diagnostics.
Samsung Galaxy
Run the Battery status test in Phone diagnostics in Samsung Members, or use Device care diagnostics where available. Samsung’s support instructions cover Galaxy devices, but menus and available tests vary by model and software version. The result is useful as a status check; Samsung does not promise that every Galaxy phone will report a numeric capacity percentage. Follow Samsung’s diagnostic instructions for your device.

If your phone does not show a capacity percentage
Battery-health screens are not consistent across makers or models. Look for the manufacturer’s built-in diagnostic and support guidance for your exact phone and software version. A diagnostic may report a condition or status without giving a capacity figure.
- On Pixel, distinguish Battery Diagnostics availability from the narrower availability of the Battery health screen.
- On Samsung Galaxy, read the status the diagnostic actually provides; do not assume it represents a percentage or a mAh reading.
- Do not assume one Android app, code, or ADB method works across all Android phones. Android’s system health information is intended for specific system contexts, not as a universal consumer battery-capacity test. Android’s documentation describes that system information context.
Why a charger reading cannot confirm battery health
A charging meter or charger can report power or energy delivered during charging. That alone does not establish how much energy the installed battery can store when full. Likewise, current charge, charger wattage, and estimated battery health describe different things, so they should not be compared as if they were interchangeable.

When to consider battery service
Use the service guidance for your exact device. For Pixel, Google recommends considering replacement when the battery status is Reduced or the model’s rated cycle threshold has been reached. For iPhone, follow the replacement recommendation shown by the phone and Apple’s service options. Apple advises using Apple or an authorized service provider for built-in battery service. A third-party replacement battery can affect how some metrics are reported. In a June 2024 environmental report, Apple said it planned to show certain battery metrics with a warning when it could not verify a third-party part because it lacked calibration data. Treat that as historical context: check the warning and service guidance on your current phone. Apple’s June 2024 report describes that plan.
