You can install some Android apps on a BlackBerry Passport without replacing BlackBerry 10, but turning the phone into a full Android device is a separate, risky hardware project. For apps, open an APK in File Manager; for a full operating-system conversion, a community guide documents a LineageOS 18.1 process involving eMMC chip removal and rewriting. The two routes have very different requirements and risks.

Install an Android app and keep BlackBerry 10
BlackBerry’s Passport user guide describes installing an Android app by opening its APK file in File Manager. This adds an app within BB10’s Android app support; it does not install Android as the phone’s operating system.

- Obtain the APK you intend to install. BlackBerry warns that apps from sources other than BlackBerry World may not have been reviewed by BlackBerry and may put the device or personal data at risk.
- Open the downloaded APK in File Manager and follow the on-screen prompts to install it.
- Check the app’s actual functions after installation. An APK can install yet still fail or offer limited functionality if it depends on services unsupported by BlackBerry 10.
Successful installation is not proof that a current app is compatible. The Passport guide documents service limitations, so check the features you need rather than assuming the app will work fully.

Full conversion to Android: what the community guide describes
A community-maintained Passport Conversion guide documents replacing BB10 with LineageOS 18.1. It explicitly warns, “This project isn’t begginner friendly!” (The spelling is reproduced as it appears on the guide.) This is not a routine ROM flash performed with a USB cable alone: the documented approach involves removing and rewriting the phone’s eMMC storage.

High-level workflow
The guide’s broad sequence is:
- Collect the required platform tools, imggen utility, LineageOS recovery image, and ROM.
- Remove the logic board and desolder the eMMC chip.
- Back up the boot0 and user physical partitions before writing any modified images.
- Generate modified images, program them to the eMMC, and set the boot partition.
- Resolder the eMMC and reinstall the board.
- Boot into fastboot and flash the recovery image.
- In recovery, factory-reset and format data, then sideload the LineageOS 18.1 ROM through ADB.
This is a summary of the project’s workflow, not a validated repair procedure. The guide’s ROM and recovery files, detailed commands, and any prerequisite steps should be checked directly on the project page before any work begins.
Which Passport variants?
The guide says V5 and newer Passports are supported and describes SE and AT&T variants as guaranteed to work. Those are the project maintainer’s claims, not official BlackBerry support or a guarantee for every device configuration. Confirm the exact revision and variant against the current guide before sourcing files or modifying a handset.

Board-level tools and skills
The documented method requires logic-board removal, eMMC desoldering, chip programming, and resoldering. If you lack suitable equipment and board-rework experience, this is not a normal do-it-yourself software installation. The guide does not establish that a particular programmer model or repair provider is suitable.

Backups and boot protection
The conversion guide instructs operators to back up the boot0 and user physical partitions. Community reverse-engineering notes describe hardware write protection on Passport boot partitions and warn that changing boot-partition data can permanently brick a device. A rooted or booting BB10 installation does not, by itself, show that protected boot partitions can be rewritten safely. Do not proceed without a backup you can actually restore and a recovery plan you understand.

Data loss and failure risk
The described process formats data, and a failed boot-partition modification may leave the handset unusable. Preserve anything you need before starting, and do not use a Passport whose loss you cannot accept. The cited sources publish no success rate or failure percentage.
Downloads and changing project details
Supported variants, ROM and recovery files, and community instructions can change. Check the current instructions and downloads at the project source before beginning; the available documentation does not independently establish that every linked file is safe or that the procedure will succeed on a particular handset.

Do not assume Android will fix network problems
A Passport owner asked on a CrackBerry forum whether Android might fix a network problem. That question is not evidence that conversion repairs network connectivity. Installing Play Store-related files or APKs is also different from replacing BB10 with Android; neither route should be treated as a demonstrated network fix.
What BlackBerry 10’s end-of-life dates mean
BlackBerry’s support table lists August 2018 as the end of development for BlackBerry 10.3.x and December 2019 as its end of life. BlackBerry’s end-of-life FAQ discusses effects on services used by BB10 devices. Those platform dates do not prove that every Passport handset or network function stopped working on those dates.
