These are different controls: allowing an installation does not grant the installed app access to your camera, location, contacts, or files.

What “install unknown apps” means
Android’s Allow from this source control is permission for a source app to request an installation. The source is the app you used to obtain or open the installer—for example, a browser or file manager. It is not a blanket switch that makes every app on the phone trusted, and it is not the same as the permissions the newly installed app may later request.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThink of the process as three separate decisions:
- Source access: Do you want this particular app to be able to initiate installations?
- App permissions: Which device features or information may the installed app use, such as location, camera, contacts, or files?
- Developer verification: Does a separate device or regional verification rule apply to this app and installation source?
Handling these decisions separately makes it easier to limit exposure. You can authorize a source temporarily, revoke its install access afterward, and decide on the installed app’s data permissions on their own merits.

For example, a browser may be allowed to hand an installer to Android, while the installed app is denied access to the camera. Conversely, granting an app location access does not give the browser permission to install other apps. If you use a different app to open the installer than the one that downloaded it, Android’s prompt may identify that opening app as the relevant source. Check the name shown rather than assuming the download app is always the one that needs authorization.
Before you install: decide whether the app is trustworthy
Google recommends getting apps from Google Play when possible. An Android prompt that permits an installation is not a safety certification; it only enables the installation flow. Google warns that apps from unknown sources may damage the device, cause data loss, or expose personal information.
Before continuing, check that you intended to install the app and that you trust the developer. If an unexpected message, email, or call tells you to install something, do not follow its link or instructions immediately. Verify the request independently through the organization’s official website or a phone number you already know to be genuine. Be especially wary if an app asks for settings unrelated to the task it claims to perform.

If the same app is available through an official store, using that store avoids authorizing a separate source app for this installation. That does not mean every store app is risk-free, but it is Google’s recommended route where available.
Before tapping through, identify both the app and the developer you expect to see. If the name, source, or requested access does not match what you intended, cancel and verify it. Do not rely on the fact that Android displayed an install button, or that a download completed, as proof that the app is safe. If the request came through an organization, go to its known website or call a number you already trust rather than using contact details or links included in a suspicious message.
How do I allow an app from an unknown source on a Pixel?
Google’s Pixel instructions use a per-source permission. Begin with the browser, file manager, or other app that is handling the download or installer—not with the app you are about to install.
- Start downloading the app from the source you intend to use.
- When Android displays a message that the source cannot install unknown apps, tap Settings.
- Turn on Allow from this source for the app shown in that screen.
- Return to the installation screen and continue only if you have verified the app and its developer.
The permission belongs to the source app displayed in the prompt. For example, if you opened the installer using a file manager, that file manager is the app whose source permission matters. If you instead initiate the installation from a browser, authorize the browser shown by Android. Enabling one source does not automatically authorize every browser or file manager.

Granting this permission allows that source to request installations; it does not automatically install an app, make the developer verified, or approve the installed app’s later requests for data. Android still presents an installation step, and you still need to decide whether to proceed. Avoid leaving the setting enabled for sources you do not need to use.
Google’s Pixel help notes that some instructions apply only to Android 8.0 and later, and that custom Android versions may differ. If your screen does not match these steps, search Settings for Install unknown apps and use your device maker’s current guidance rather than assuming the menu is identical.

How to turn off install unknown apps after installation
Once the installation is complete, you can revoke the source app’s ability to request further installations. This does not uninstall the app you just installed, and it does not change that app’s camera, location, or other permissions.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
- Select the source app you authorized, such as the browser or file manager used for the installation.
- Turn off Allow from this source.
If the menu labels differ, search Settings for Install unknown apps. The important check is that you have selected the source app whose installation access you meant to revoke. Turning off a different app’s switch will not revoke the permission granted to the original source.
Recommended Free Tools
Revoking source access is a useful cleanup step, especially if you enabled a browser or file manager only to install one app. It limits that source’s ability to request additional installations later. It does not remove the installed app or undo any permission choices you made for it. If you no longer want the app itself, that is a separate decision from switching off the installation source.
How do I change permissions for one Android app?
Installing an app and granting it access to personal data or device features are separate actions. To review one app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions, then select a permission and choose from the options Android offers for that permission and device.
- Open Settings > Apps and select the installed app.
- Tap Permissions.
- Choose a permission, such as location, camera, contacts, or files.
- Select an available choice, such as Allow or Don’t allow. For some permissions, Android may offer a more limited option, such as access only while using the app or asking every time.
Available choices depend on the permission and the device. Location, camera, and microphone may offer more than one grant level, but do not assume every app or Android version presents the same options. If an app’s core function does not need a permission, denying it may be the more privacy-protective choice. If a feature stops working, you can revisit the permission screen and decide whether that specific feature justifies access.
Review each permission as a separate choice. A map app may have a clear reason to request location, while access to contacts or the microphone may need a different explanation. You do not have to grant every permission an app requests just because you installed it. Where Android offers an option limited to use while the app is open, or an ask-every-time choice, those can provide a narrower alternative to broader access. The options vary, so use the choices displayed on your phone rather than expecting a particular menu for every permission.
Review permissions by category
To see which apps can use a particular type of information or feature, open Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager, choose a permission category, and inspect the apps listed there. This is useful when you want to audit a category across the phone rather than only review one app at a time. Use the individual app’s Permissions screen when you want to change settings for a specific app.
These screens answer different questions: the app page shows the permissions assigned to that app; the Permission manager groups apps by the permission they can use. Neither screen controls whether a browser or file manager can initiate future app installations.
A practical review can go in either direction. Open an app’s page when you want to check everything it can access; open a category in Permission manager when you want to compare which apps have access to, for example, the microphone. If a permission is listed and you are unsure why the app needs it, consider the app’s purpose and the feature you use. You can change the grant from the app’s Permissions page and return later if a feature you rely on no longer works.

What Play Protect does—and what it does not do
Keep Google Play Protect on. Google says it checks apps during installation and periodically scans the device. It may notify you about a potentially harmful app, disable an app, or remove it. Those safeguards can help detect problems, but they are not a guarantee that every app is safe.
For an unknown app Play Protect has not scanned, Google may offer to send app details to Google for evaluation. Google also says that, when the improved harmful-app detection setting is used, it may receive information such as device network connections, potentially harmful URLs, operating-system information, and details of apps installed from Google Play or other sources. Consider this data handling when deciding whether to use that optional improved detection feature.
Play Protect is not a substitute for verifying the developer, being cautious about unexpected installation requests, or limiting the installed app’s permissions. A scan result does not turn an unknown developer into a known one, and an app that passes a check may still request access you do not want to grant.
In short, Play Protect is one safeguard in a larger decision. It can check apps at install time and scan periodically, and Google says it can warn, disable, or remove an app it identifies as harmful. It cannot promise that every app is harmless, and its presence does not make it wise to ignore a warning or grant an unrelated permission. If it offers to send details of an unscanned app for evaluation, consider the information Google says may be received when improved detection is enabled.
Be careful with accessibility and other restricted settings
An app may ask you to enable a restricted setting after installation. Google says some of its instructions apply to Android 13 and later and warns that these settings can expose sensitive information. Accessibility is a consequential example: an app with accessibility access can read screen content and interact with apps on your behalf.
Some legitimate tools have a genuine accessibility use, but the capability is broad. Before enabling it, confirm the developer and ask whether the app’s stated purpose actually requires that access. Do not enable a restricted setting just because an app presents it as a routine installation step, or because the app refuses to explain what it needs. If the request is unexpected or unrelated, stop and verify the app through a trusted channel.
Google’s warning is direct: “When you enable restricted settings, you allow apps to get access to sensitive info that could put your personal data at risk.” Treat such a prompt as a separate security decision, not as a continuation of the install permission. A legitimate accessibility tool may need broad capabilities to perform its intended function, but that is a reason to verify the developer and understand the access—not a reason to grant it automatically.
Developer verification: a separate, changing installation rule
Developer verification is distinct from both Allow from this source and the installed app’s permissions. Google’s Android guidance, checked on October 13, 2026, says an app from an unverified developer may be blocked on a certified Android device. Its advanced bypass flow requires the user to acknowledge the risk and complete a security delay; it is not the ordinary source-permission toggle.
Google’s documented advanced flow
For an installation blocked under this verification flow, Google documents a one-time process: enable Developer options, open Settings > System > Developer options, switch on Allow apps from unverified developers, and complete a 24-hour security delay. After the delay, Google says the user can keep the advanced flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely; a warning still appears at install time.

Those durations belong to the advanced developer-verification flow. They are not a waiting period for the usual Allow from this source permission. Because Developer options and an unverified-developer override change the device’s security posture, do not enable them casually or for an app whose developer you cannot verify. If you see an unverified-developer block, first confirm that the app is genuinely from the developer you intended to use and that you understand the warning; do not treat bypassing it as routine troubleshooting.
Where Google says the policy is rolling out
Google’s current Android Help page says the protections start in September 2026 for apps from participating stores on certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The initially listed stores are Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Galaxy Store, Palm Store, V-Appstore, and GetApps. Google says a broader global expansion is planned for 2027.
Google describes the policy as applying to certified Android 8 and later devices, with exemptions for AOSP and non-certified devices as well as other regional or service exceptions. These are rollout details, not evidence that every Android device everywhere is subject to a universal block. Store participation, regional scope, and timing can change; consult Google’s current Android Help before relying on the bypass instructions for a particular device or region.
This rollout is about developer verification, not a replacement name for the per-source setting. You may encounter the familiar source permission in one situation and a separate verification warning in another. The first asks whether a particular app can request installation; the second concerns whether the developer meets the verification rule applicable to that device and region. Do not assume turning on one setting resolves the other.

Troubleshooting common problems
The install prompt does not match the Pixel steps
Android manufacturers can change menu labels and settings paths, and custom Android versions may differ. Search Settings for Install unknown apps. Identify the app that is actually opening or handling the installer, and follow the device maker’s current instructions if its screen uses a different route.
The app still cannot install after source access is allowed
First confirm that Allow from this source was enabled for the app named in the installation flow. The permission is per source app, so authorizing a different browser or file manager will not grant the needed access. If the installation is blocked with an unverified-developer warning rather than a source-permission prompt, that is a separate verification flow; the ordinary source toggle does not resolve it.
An app asks for access that seems unrelated
Do not treat installation as consent to every later request. Review the request against the app’s purpose, deny access if you are not comfortable, and verify unexpected requests through the developer’s official channel. Treat requests for accessibility or other restricted settings especially cautiously because they can expose sensitive information or allow interaction with other apps.
You want to stop future installations from the same source
Return to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, select the source app, and switch off Allow from this source. This is separate from changing the installed app’s data permissions or uninstalling it.
Frequently asked questions
Does “Allow from this source” make every app on my phone trusted?
No. It allows the specific source app shown in Android’s screen—such as a browser or file manager—to request app installations. It does not certify the developer or grant the installed app access to personal data. Review the installed app’s permissions separately.
Best Value
Will turning off install access remove the app I just installed?
No. Turning off Allow from this source revokes that source app’s ability to request future installations. It does not uninstall an app already on the phone or change that app’s permissions.
Where can I check which apps have camera or location access?
For one app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions. To see apps grouped by permission type, open Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager, then choose the category you want to inspect. Available grant choices vary by permission and device.
Is Play Protect a guarantee that an APK is safe?
No. Google says Play Protect checks apps during installation and periodically scans the device, and may warn, disable, or remove a potentially harmful app. It is a safeguard, not a guarantee. Continue to verify the developer and make deliberate permission choices.
Why do I see a 24-hour delay?
Google documents a 24-hour delay for the advanced flow to allow apps from unverified developers on applicable certified devices. That delay is not part of the ordinary Allow from this source setting. The developer-verification policy has a regional rollout, so whether it applies depends on device and location.

The Bottom Line
On Pixel, enable Allow from this source only for the browser, file manager, or other app handling the installer, and turn it off when you are finished. Then review the installed app’s permissions separately. Prefer Google Play when possible, keep Play Protect on, and treat developer-verification and restricted-setting prompts as separate security decisions.
