What Fish changes on an Ubuntu VPS
Fish is an interactive Unix shell designed to provide discoverable commands, syntax highlighting, autosuggestions and a configuration language that does not follow Bash syntax. It can be useful for administering a VPS interactively, but it is not a drop-in replacement for Bash in every environment. System tools, login scripts and automation may assume a Bourne-compatible shell and the files it reads at login.

Recommended Free Tools
The safest approach is to separate experimentation from account-wide changes:
- Install Fish and confirm its path and version.
- Run it temporarily with
fishwhile your account still logs in with its existing shell. - Configure Fish in its own files.
- Only then decide whether SSH logins should start Fish automatically.
Fish’s official tutorial covers its interactive behavior and configuration model; see the Fish tutorial for the upstream reference.

Before you install
Confirm access and privileges
Connect to the VPS over SSH with the account that will use Fish. Installing the distribution package requires an account that can run sudo. You also need a second way to reach the machine while testing a new login shell: leave your first SSH session open, or arrange console access through your VPS provider.
Know which account you are changing
The commands below operate on the current user unless you explicitly use another account. A root shell can install the package, but changing root’s login shell has a larger recovery impact than changing an unprivileged administrator’s shell. Check the current identity and shell before proceeding:

echo $SHELL
$SHELL is the shell recorded for the session and is not a complete inventory of every shell available on the system. The executable check later in this guide is authoritative for Fish’s installed location.
Install Fish with Ubuntu’s package manager
Use the Ubuntu package first
Ubuntu’s package stream is the default choice because it follows the release’s normal dependency and update mechanisms. Package versions and availability vary by Ubuntu release, so do not assume that two VPS images provide the same Fish version.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install fish
Read the package manager’s proposed changes and confirm the installation. If apt reports that the package cannot be located, verify the VPS’s Ubuntu release and enabled repositories before switching installation methods.
Optional Fish project PPA
The Fish project documents an Ubuntu release PPA. Use it only when you have a specific need for that release stream and have accepted the maintenance implications of adding a third-party repository:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:fish-shell/release-4
sudo apt update
sudo apt install fish
The PPA is not required for a normal installation. Repository support and the versions offered can change with Ubuntu releases; the distribution package is the less surprising starting point.
Verify the executable before changing account settings
Locate the command and print its version:
command -v fish
fish --version
command -v fish should return the full path that your account can execute, commonly a path under /usr/bin. Use the path returned on your VPS rather than assuming a location. A successful version response confirms that the shell starts independently of any login-shell configuration.

Try Fish without making it the default shell
Start Fish from the current session:
fish
You are now inside a nested Fish process. Test commands, completion and your intended configuration without risking a future SSH login. Leave the nested shell and return to the parent shell with:
exit
Run exit once for each nested shell you opened. This temporary workflow is the safest way to discover syntax errors or missing environment variables before changing the account record.

Main per-user configuration
Fish reads the per-user startup file ~/.config/fish/config.fish when it starts. Create the directory and file if they do not exist:
mkdir -p ~/.config/fish
touch ~/.config/fish/config.fish
Edit the file with the editor available on your VPS. For example, if nano is installed:
nano ~/.config/fish/config.fish
Do not paste Bash forms such as export PATH=... into this file. Fish has different grammar for variables, functions, conditionals and command substitution.
Use conf.d for small startup snippets
Fish automatically executes .fish files in ~/.config/fish/conf.d/ before it reads config.fish. This is useful when you want separate files for aliases, environment variables or tool-specific setup:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
mkdir -p ~/.config/fish/conf.d
nano ~/.config/fish/conf.d/tools.fish
Keep each snippet focused and give it a descriptive name. A syntax error in any startup file can affect every Fish instance, so test a new snippet by starting a fresh fish process before closing your known-good SSH session.
Limit settings to login or interactive sessions
Not every Fish process has the same purpose. Use Fish’s status checks when a setting should run only for a login shell or only for an interactive terminal:

if status --is-interactive
# Prompt, completion or interactive-only settings go here
end
A login check prevents environment initialization from running in every nested interactive process. An interactive check keeps prompt-related commands out of non-interactive invocations.
Manage PATH with Fish syntax
Recommended path addition
Fish’s current documentation recommends fish_add_path for an idempotent user-path addition. Add a directory such as ~/linux/bin with:
fish_add_path ~/linux/bin
Place that command in config.fish if it should apply whenever Fish starts. The command avoids repeatedly adding the same directory when the configuration is loaded more than once.
Login-only PATH example
If the directory should be added only for login sessions, use Fish’s conditional and exported-variable syntax:
if status --is-login
set -gx PATH $PATH ~/linux/bin
end
set -gx creates or updates a global exported variable. Fish treats PATH as a list, so do not translate a colon-delimited Bash assignment mechanically. After editing, start a new Fish process and inspect the result:
echo $PATH
command -v your-command
Replace your-command with a real executable in the directory you added. If the command is still not found, check the spelling, permissions and the path shown by echo $PATH.
Add functions and persistent variables
Save a reusable function
Fish functions can be saved under ~/.config/fish/functions. The following example defines an ll command that runs ls -lh:
function ll
ls -lh $argv
end
To make a function available automatically, save its definition as ~/.config/fish/functions/ll.fish. The $argv list passes any arguments supplied to ll through to ls. Keep function files in Fish syntax; a Bash alias declaration is not equivalent.

Use universal variables deliberately
Universal variables persist across Fish sessions. For example:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsset -U EDITOR vim
This setting is stored by Fish and will affect future Fish instances for the user. Universal variables are convenient for stable preferences, but they can be surprising when a value intended for one project or one terminal becomes global to every Fish session. Use them only for settings whose broad scope you actually want.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make Fish the default SSH login shell (optional)
Changing the login shell changes what starts for terminal logins, including SSH connections. It does not convert existing scripts to Fish. Complete the temporary test and configuration steps first.
1. Confirm Fish’s exact path
command -v fish
Copy the path returned by this command. The following steps intentionally use command substitution so the account record matches the executable installed on this VPS.
2. Add the path to the approved shell list
Many systems require a login shell to appear in /etc/shells. Append the installed path with:
command -v fish | sudo tee -a /etc/shells
Inspect the file afterward if you are unsure whether the path was already present. Avoid adding a typo or a directory that is not an executable shell.
3. Change the current user’s login shell
chsh -s "$(command -v fish)"
Depending on the system, chsh may ask for your password or accept the change immediately. This modifies the current account, not every user on the VPS.
4. Reconnect and verify
Do not close the original SSH session yet. Open a completely new SSH connection and check which shell is running:
Best Value
echo $SHELL
ps -p $$ -o comm=
The process name should identify Fish in the new session. Test your usual administrative commands, confirm that expected directories are in $PATH, and check that your prompt and functions load normally.

Fish versus keeping Bash as the login shell
| Decision area | Fish as login shell | Bash kept as login shell |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive experience | Provides Fish’s syntax highlighting, autosuggestions and completion model when the SSH session starts. | Retains the familiar Bash interactive environment and its established startup behavior. |
| Configuration syntax | Uses config.fish, conf.d, Fish functions and Fish-specific set commands. |
Continues to use Bourne-style startup files and syntax expected by existing administrators. |
| PATH and environment | Uses Fish list variables and commands such as fish_add_path; Bash assignments cannot be pasted unchanged. |
Uses the environment initialization already supplied by the VPS image and its profile files. |
| Compatibility | Can expose assumptions in tools that expect a Bourne-compatible login shell or /etc/profile. |
Offers the broadest compatibility with system tooling and scripts designed for Bourne-style shells. |
| Recovery over SSH | Requires a working Fish startup and PATH for every new login; a bad configuration can block normal use. | Usually provides the simplest fallback when diagnosing login or environment problems. |
| Scripts | Does not automatically change the interpreter for existing scripts. | Remains a practical default for scripts that use Bash or POSIX syntax. |
Fish is a strong interactive choice when you are prepared to maintain Fish-specific configuration. Keeping Bash as the login shell is the conservative option for production accounts that depend on established profile files or vendor tooling.
Understand the scripting boundary
A login-shell change affects how an interactive SSH session starts; it does not rewrite scripts or alter their shebang lines. A script should name the interpreter it requires. A Bash script can continue to begin with a Bash shebang, and a POSIX script can continue to request a POSIX shell. When you want to run a Fish script explicitly, invoke Fish:
fish /path/to/script
The shebang determines the interpreter when a script is executed directly without an explicit shell command. Keep deployment scripts, cron jobs and automation under their intended interpreter rather than relying on whichever shell an administrator uses interactively.
Troubleshoot common problems
apt install fish cannot find the package
- Run
sudo apt updateagain and read any repository errors. - Confirm the VPS’s Ubuntu release and enabled repositories.
- Check whether a repository policy or image customization has removed the component that contains Fish.
- Consider the Fish project PPA only when you specifically need its release stream and can maintain that repository.
Fish starts but commands are missing
Inspect the path inside Fish with echo $PATH and compare it with the path from a known-good Bash session. A Fish configuration that replaces rather than extends PATH can hide system directories. Prefer fish_add_path for additions, and verify that each directory exists and is readable.
Configuration produces an error at startup
Start Fish with a minimal configuration to isolate the problem:
fish --no-config
If Fish works without configuration, inspect the newest file in config.fish, conf.d or functions. Temporarily move the suspect snippet out of the directory, correct the Fish syntax, and start a fresh process to retest.
SSH login behaves unexpectedly after chsh
Keep the original SSH connection open and use it to inspect /etc/shells, the account’s recorded shell and the Fish files in your home directory. A malformed startup command, missing executable or incomplete PATH can affect the new session. Fix the configuration, then reconnect from a new client rather than assuming the existing process reflects the corrected state.
You need to roll back to Bash
Use the actual Bash path present on the VPS and confirm that it is listed in /etc/shells:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchescommand -v bash
chsh -s /bin/bash
If command -v bash returns a different path, substitute that path in the chsh command. Open a new SSH connection after changing it. Rolling back the login shell does not delete your Fish configuration, so you can continue launching Fish manually with fish while you diagnose the cause.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Connect with an account that can use
sudo. - Leave one known-good SSH session open during testing.
- Install Fish with
sudo apt updateandsudo apt install fish. - Verify both
command -v fishandfish --version. - Try
fish, then return withexit. - Store user settings in
~/.config/fish/config.fish; useconf.dfor separate snippets. - Use Fish syntax and
fish_add_pathinstead of Bash startup assignments. - Test functions, PATH entries and administrative commands in a new Fish process.
- If changing the login shell, add the exact executable path to
/etc/shells, runchsh, and verify with a new SSH connection. - Keep scripts on their declared Bash or POSIX interpreter.
