phpPgAdmin is a browser-based administration panel for PostgreSQL. On a Linux VPS, the dependable installation path is to install the distribution package and PHP’s PostgreSQL extension, publish the application through Apache or Nginx with PHP-FPM, set its server entry to PostgreSQL on localhost:5432, and protect the URL with HTTPS and an IP allow-list. Keep extra_login_security enabled, and verify that your phpPgAdmin release supports the PostgreSQL major version you run before exposing the panel.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What phpPgAdmin does on a VPS
phpPgAdmin is a PHP application that connects to PostgreSQL and presents databases, schemas, tables, roles, queries and maintenance actions in a web interface. The browser talks to Apache or Nginx; the web server passes PHP requests to PHP (or PHP-FPM); phpPgAdmin then connects to PostgreSQL, normally over the local loopback interface. It is an administration client, not a PostgreSQL server and not a replacement for PostgreSQL’s command-line tools.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The safest common topology is a PostgreSQL service bound to the VPS’s local interface, phpPgAdmin available only to an administrator network or VPN, and HTTPS terminating at the web server. You do not need to publish TCP port 5432 to the internet for phpPgAdmin to work.
Check compatibility before installing
Version matching matters because phpPgAdmin’s PostgreSQL support has lagged behind new server releases. The official releases page currently marks 7.13.0 as the latest release. Its announcement adds support for PostgreSQL 13 and provisional support for PostgreSQL 14. A Debian bug report records that 7.13.0 does not support PostgreSQL 15. FreshPorts lists a 7.14.8 package and records a 7.14.3 change adding PostgreSQL 15 support; that is packager information rather than an upstream release note. An upstream pull request is titled “Support for postgresql 15-17 and big speed update,” but its merge status and release inclusion have not been confirmed. PostgreSQL 16 and 17 support therefore should not be assumed.

| Item | What is established | Deployment implication |
|---|---|---|
| phpPgAdmin 7.13.0 | Latest on the official releases page; PostgreSQL 13 supported and PostgreSQL 14 provisional | Suitable only after checking your distribution package and PostgreSQL version |
| PostgreSQL 15 | Debian report says 7.13.0 does not support it; FreshPorts records PostgreSQL 15 support in 7.14.3 package changes | Confirm the exact package version and its changelog before production use |
| PostgreSQL 16 and 17 | Support was not confirmed by the reviewed release information | Check the upstream release notes and HISTORY file for your exact combination |
Check the official repository’s release notes and HISTORY file immediately before deployment. A package supplied by your operating system may have a different version from the upstream latest release, so verify both the package version and the PostgreSQL server version.
Prepare the Linux VPS
Prerequisites
- A supported Debian/Ubuntu or CentOS/RHEL installation with root or
sudoaccess. - A running PostgreSQL server, normally listening on local port
5432. - A web server: Apache is the simpler package-based route; Nginx requires a PHP-FPM location block.
- PHP and the PHP PostgreSQL extension (
pgsqland, where packaged separately,pdo_pgsql). - An HTTPS certificate and a plan for limiting administrator access by source IP, VPN or another private network.
Before changing anything, record your operating-system release, PHP version, PostgreSQL major version and the web server you intend to use. Distribution packages can use different PHP-FPM socket names and service names.

1. Install phpPgAdmin and the PostgreSQL PHP extension
- Refresh package metadata:
sudo apt update - Install the application and extension:
sudo apt install phppgadmin php-pgsql - If Apache is not already present, install it and PHP support:
sudo apt install apache2 libapache2-mod-php
Debian-family packages normally place phpPgAdmin configuration under /etc/phppgadmin/ and the web files in a distribution-managed directory. Keep those files managed by the package rather than copying a release into an arbitrary web root.
2. Set the PostgreSQL server entry
Open /etc/phppgadmin/config.inc.php with root privileges and make the first server entry use the local database service:
$conf['servers'][0]['host'] = 'localhost';
$conf['servers'][0]['port'] = 5432;
Leave other connection options at their packaged defaults until you have confirmed that the basic local connection works. If PostgreSQL is on another host, treat that as a separate network-security project: use encrypted transport and an explicit firewall policy instead of opening the database broadly.
3. Enable the Apache configuration
The Debian package usually ships an Apache alias configuration. Enable it and reload Apache:
sudo a2enconf phppgadmin
sudo systemctl reload apache2
If a2enconf reports that the configuration is unavailable, inspect /etc/apache2/conf-available/ for the package-supplied filename, enable that file, and reload Apache. Do not create a second alias pointing at a different copy unless you have a specific reason.
4. Confirm the local URL
From the VPS itself, open the package’s alias path (commonly /phppgadmin) and confirm that the login page renders. If the page is not found, check Apache’s enabled configuration and error log before changing PHP settings.
Install on CentOS or RHEL
1. Install the packages
Package names and repositories vary by CentOS/RHEL release. Where phpPgAdmin is available through the configured repositories, install it with the distribution package manager and then add the PHP PostgreSQL module:

sudo yum install phppgadmin
sudo yum install php-pgsql
On systems where the package is named differently or is not in the enabled repositories, use the repository’s current package name rather than downloading an unverified archive. The package route keeps configuration and security updates aligned with the operating system.
2. Configure the connection
Edit the installed config.inc.php (commonly under /etc/phppgadmin/) and set:
$conf['servers'][0]['host'] = 'localhost';
$conf['servers'][0]['port'] = 5432;
3. Publish it through the web server
Apache and Nginx arrangements differ on CentOS/RHEL. Apache may require an explicit alias or included configuration, while Nginx requires a location block and PHP-FPM. Check the package’s installed files and the enabled service names before restarting anything. Typical service checks are:
sudo systemctl status httpd
sudo systemctl status php-fpm
Use the services that actually exist on your release, then reload the web server after the alias or Nginx configuration passes its syntax check.
Configure Apache
Apache is usually the least labor-intensive choice because Debian-family phpPgAdmin packages commonly include an alias configuration. After enabling the package configuration, verify the alias path and protect it with HTTPS and an access rule.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Restrict the administrative URL
Use Apache authorization for the phpPgAdmin location so that only your administration network can reach it. The exact directive depends on your Apache version; current releases use a Require rule inside the phpPgAdmin location. Permit only the fixed public address or private subnet used by administrators, and deny everyone else. Apply the rule to the alias, not to the entire web site.
Reload safely
sudo apachectl configtest
sudo systemctl reload apache2
On RHEL-family systems the equivalent web service is commonly httpd. Run its configuration test before reloading. A syntax error can leave the existing configuration running, but it will prevent your new restriction from taking effect.
Configure Nginx with PHP-FPM
Nginx does not interpret PHP itself. You must map the phpPgAdmin files to a URL and pass PHP requests to the PHP-FPM Unix socket used by your distribution. The socket filename and PHP-FPM user differ by release, so discover them instead of copying a path from another server.
1. Find the installed files and socket
find /usr/share -maxdepth 2 -type d -iname '*phppgadmin*'
find /run -type s -iname '*php*fpm*' 2>/dev/null
Use the directory that contains phpPgAdmin’s index.php and the socket returned by the second command. Confirm the PHP-FPM service is running before testing Nginx.

2. Add a location block
The following illustrates the required structure. Keep the alias directory and socket path consistent with your server; the shown socket name is a common example, not a universal path:
location /phppgadmin/ {
alias /usr/share/phppgadmin/;
index index.php;
}
location ~ ^/phppgadmin/(.+.php)$ {
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /usr/share/phppgadmin/$1;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
For Debian or Ubuntu, the real socket may include a PHP version in its filename. Change fastcgi_pass to the socket found on your VPS, and change SCRIPT_FILENAME if the package directory is different. A mismatched socket produces a 502 error; a mismatched file path produces “File not found” responses.
3. Test and reload
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Apply the IP restriction in the same Nginx location with allow and deny rules, and expose the location through an HTTPS server block rather than plain HTTP.
Harden phpPgAdmin before using it
Keep local database access where possible
The default configuration limits phpPgAdmin to localhost. Preserve that arrangement when the web server and PostgreSQL share a VPS. If you deliberately move PostgreSQL to another host, change the server entry only after configuring encrypted database transport, PostgreSQL host-based authentication and a firewall that permits the web server’s address alone.
Keep extra_login_security enabled
extra_login_security blocks passwordless logins and rejects the names postgres, root and administrator. Some tutorials disable it to allow direct login as the PostgreSQL superuser, but doing so removes a useful guardrail. Leave it enabled and create a separate, strong-password administrative role when routine work requires privileges beyond an ordinary account.
Understand what owned_only does
owned_only can hide databases that the logged-in role does not own from the list. It is a presentation filter, not authorization: a user can still reach another database with SQL if PostgreSQL grants that access. Enforce permissions with PostgreSQL roles, database ownership, schemas and grants.
Use HTTPS and an IP allow-list
Serve the panel only over HTTPS with a valid certificate. Add a web-server rule that permits the administrator IP addresses or private VPN subnet and denies other clients. HTTPS protects credentials in transit; the allow-list reduces the number of systems that can even present the login page. An additional HTTP authentication layer or VPN is appropriate for a high-value production database.
Change the default alias as a minor obscurity measure
Changing /phppgadmin to a less predictable alias reduces casual scanning, but it is not an access-control mechanism. Keep the IP restriction, HTTPS and strong PostgreSQL authentication even after changing the path. Update the Apache alias or Nginx location and test the new URL before removing the old one.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not expose PostgreSQL port 5432
Do not open TCP 5432 to the internet merely to make phpPgAdmin work. Keep PostgreSQL bound to localhost where possible. If a remote database connection is required, permit only the web server’s source address and use PostgreSQL’s authentication and encryption settings deliberately.

Limit the VPS firewall to required services
A minimal UFW policy for a web-admin VPS allows SSH for administration and HTTP/HTTPS for the web server:
sudo ufw allow 22/tcp
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
Use your provider’s firewall as a second perimeter when available, and ensure SSH access is established before enabling a restrictive policy.
Log in and perform routine tasks
1. Sign in with a PostgreSQL role
Open the protected HTTPS URL and authenticate with a PostgreSQL role that has the permissions required for the task. phpPgAdmin does not create a separate user database; its login is passed to PostgreSQL. A role with only the needed database and schema privileges is safer for routine work than the cluster superuser.
2. Select a server and database
The left navigation tree lists the configured server and the databases visible to the role. Expand a database to inspect schemas, tables, views, sequences, functions and roles that your PostgreSQL permissions allow. If an object is absent, first check the role’s grants rather than assuming the application is broken.
3. Run SQL deliberately
Use the SQL or query page for statements that are easier to review as text. For example, a role and database can be created with PostgreSQL SQL:
CREATE ROLE app_operator LOGIN PASSWORD 'use-a-long-unique-secret';
CREATE DATABASE app_data OWNER app_operator;
Do not paste production passwords into shared browser sessions, shell history or tickets. Review destructive statements, run them against the intended database, and use transactions where the operation supports them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Manage permissions in PostgreSQL
Use role membership and explicit grants to control access. Keep ownership and administrative roles separate from the account used by an application. Remember that hiding objects with owned_only does not change these permissions.
5. Treat browser exports as operational data
When you export query results or database objects through phpPgAdmin, store the files with the same care as database backups. Browser downloads can contain personal data, credentials embedded in rows or schema details. Transfer them over encrypted channels and remove temporary copies when the task is complete.
Apache and Nginx: which setup is simpler?
| Consideration | Apache | Nginx |
|---|---|---|
| Initial configuration | Usually uses the package’s shipped alias configuration and can be enabled with a2enconf on Debian-family systems |
Requires a hand-written location block for the alias and PHP-FPM |
| PHP execution | Package integration commonly supplies the required PHP handling | Every PHP request must be passed to PHP-FPM with fastcgi_pass |
| Distribution dependency | Alias filename and Apache service name vary | PHP-FPM socket path and service user vary by distribution and PHP version |
| Typical failure | 404 when the alias configuration is not enabled | 502 or “File not found” when the socket or script path is wrong |
Choose the server already hosting your VPS applications unless you have a reason to migrate. Running both web servers for one panel adds another proxy and certificate configuration to maintain.

Troubleshoot common failures
“Package not found”
Confirm the operating-system release and enabled repositories. Package availability differs between Debian/Ubuntu and CentOS/RHEL derivatives. Do not substitute an old tutorial’s repository or tarball without checking its phpPgAdmin and PostgreSQL compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors404 Not Found after installation
On Apache, verify that the package configuration is enabled and reload the service. On Nginx, verify that the URL location points to the directory containing index.php. Inspect the web-server error log for the exact requested path.
502 Bad Gateway on Nginx
Check that PHP-FPM is running and that fastcgi_pass names an existing Unix socket. Confirm the Nginx worker can access the socket and reload Nginx after correcting the path.
Login is refused even though the password is correct
Check the PostgreSQL role’s login attribute, password authentication policy and the phpPgAdmin extra_login_security setting. The setting intentionally rejects passwordless accounts and the names postgres, root and administrator; do not disable it as a first response.
The login page loads but no databases appear
Verify that config.inc.php uses localhost and port 5432, that PostgreSQL is running, and that the login role has CONNECT and object privileges. A restrictive owned_only view can hide databases from the list, but it does not grant or remove access.
Connection fails after moving PostgreSQL off the VPS
Check PostgreSQL’s host-based authentication rules, the remote server’s firewall and encryption requirements. Allow the web server’s address specifically; never solve the problem by opening 5432 to every internet address.
Features fail after a PostgreSQL upgrade
Compare the PostgreSQL major version with the phpPgAdmin release support recorded in the upstream release notes and HISTORY. A server upgrade can outpace the package shipped by your operating system. Until compatibility is confirmed, use PostgreSQL’s native command-line tools or another maintained client for affected tasks.
Updating or removing phpPgAdmin
Update it through the same package manager used for installation so configuration files and dependencies receive coordinated security updates. Before an upgrade, save a copy of /etc/phppgadmin/config.inc.php and record any custom Apache or Nginx access rules. After upgrading, re-check the PostgreSQL compatibility notes, test the login URL from an allowed network, and review the web-server error log.
To remove the panel, uninstall the phpPgAdmin package and disable its Apache alias or Nginx location. Removing phpPgAdmin does not remove PostgreSQL databases, roles or data, but you should still verify that no stale public location or firewall rule remains.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Confirm the phpPgAdmin release supports your PostgreSQL major version.
- Install the distribution package and PHP PostgreSQL extension.
- Set the configured server to
localhoston port5432unless a deliberately secured remote design is required. - Publish it through the package’s Apache alias or a tested Nginx/PHP-FPM location.
- Keep
extra_login_securityenabled. - Use least-privilege PostgreSQL roles instead of the superuser for routine work.
- Require HTTPS and restrict the URL by administrator IP, VPN or both.
- Do not expose PostgreSQL 5432 publicly.
- Remember that
owned_onlyhides objects but is not access control. - Re-test the panel and its compatibility after every PostgreSQL or phpPgAdmin upgrade.
