The configuration workflow at a glance
The file you edit is not the default template. The reliable workflow is to let the server create its folders, make a working copy of the template with the exact filename Palworld expects, change that copy, then restart. The paths above are relative to the server installation directory. The Windows and Linux folders are not interchangeable: placing the file in the other platform’s directory will not configure the running server. If neither folder exists, launch the server once first; the official instructions use that initial launch to create the configuration structure.

Prepare the server before editing
Launch once to generate the folders
Run the dedicated server with its normal startup method and allow it to complete its first initialization. This creates the Pal/Saved/Config tree and the platform-specific folder. If you opened the server and immediately closed it, run it again and wait until it is clearly listening for connections before stopping it.
Stop before making a change
Do not edit a file while the server process is writing it. Shut the process down using the host’s normal stop command or console action, then confirm that it has exited. A clean stop reduces the chance that your saved file will be overwritten or that a partially written line will be loaded on the next start.
Make a backup
Before changing anything, copy the entire configuration folder or at least the current PalWorldSettings.ini to a dated backup outside the live folder. Keep one untouched copy of the original template as well. Because the settings are commonly stored on one long line, a single accidental deletion can make the file difficult to repair; a backup gives you a known-good rollback.
Create PalWorldSettings.ini from the template
- In the server installation directory, open
Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServerfor Windows orPal/Saved/Config/LinuxServerfor Linux. - Locate
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. If it is missing, confirm that you launched the dedicated server from the installation you are actually running, rather than editing a second copy. - Copy the file in the same directory.
- Rename the copy exactly to
PalWorldSettings.ini. Keep the spelling, capitalization, and.iniextension. - Open the renamed file in a plain-text editor. Avoid a word processor that can add formatting or “smart” punctuation.
Leave DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini untouched. It is the template; PalWorldSettings.ini is the live override file. If your operating system hides extensions, turn on extension display so you do not accidentally create a file named PalWorldSettings.ini.txt.

Understand the file’s syntax before changing values
The commonly documented layout is an OptionSettings=(...) expression containing comma-separated name-and-value pairs on one line. The community guide linked above shows this single-line arrangement. Treat punctuation as part of the configuration language:
- Keep the opening
OptionSettings=(and the closing parenthesis. - Separate each setting with a comma.
- Keep each setting’s name exactly as written.
- Preserve quotation marks around text values when the template uses them.
- Use the same number format already used by the template for numeric values.
- Do not insert comments, line breaks, or trailing prose inside the expression unless the current documentation explicitly permits them.
Because the official search result available for this topic does not establish every default, type, or maximum, do not infer a value from its name alone. Copy the parameter spelling and format from the template or from the current Pocketpair page, then change only the value you intend to change.

Their names are useful starting points, but the retrieved material does not independently verify every accepted value or limit against the official parameter reference. A cautious editing sequence
- Change the server name first and save.
- Add or change the server password only after confirming the syntax shown in your template.
- Set the administrator password separately; do not reuse a password that you distribute to players.

- Restart and test after this small batch, rather than changing every option at once.
Testing in small batches makes a failed startup diagnosable. If the server no longer starts after one group of edits, restore the backup and reapply one change at a time.

Adjust progression and Pal-related rates carefully
The settings most often requested by administrators include ExpRate and PalCaptureRate. Increasing them changes the pace of progression or capture according to the game’s parameter behavior, but the available material does not establish their default values, hard caps, or an authoritative recommended range. Use the value format already present in your template and document the change for your players.
Community guidance also warns that increasing PalSpawnNumRate can increase CPU load. Use a change log
Record the date, parameter, old value, new value, and reason for every edit. This is especially important for rate changes: players may report that the world feels different, while the administrator needs to identify exactly which value changed. A short text file beside your backups is sufficient; do not place comments inside the live OptionSettings expression unless the current syntax documentation says comments are supported.
Restart and verify that the server loaded the file
Palworld reads the settings at startup. Saving the file while the process is running does not apply the change to the current session. After saving:

- Close the server cleanly if it is still running.
- Start it again using the same executable, service, container, or launch script that created the configuration folder.
- Watch the startup output for errors or an immediate shutdown.
- Join from a client and check the visible result: the server name, password requirement, and ability to connect are practical first tests.
- For rate changes, perform a controlled in-game check rather than assuming that a successful boot proves every value was accepted.
If the result is unchanged, first verify that you edited the file in the active installation and that its name is exactly PalWorldSettings.ini. Then confirm that the server was actually restarted, not merely disconnected from the console.

The server ignores every change
- Check the platform folder: Windows uses
WindowsServer; Linux usesLinuxServer. - Confirm that the running service points to the same installation directory you edited.
- Check for a hidden extra extension such as
.txt. - Confirm the file is named
PalWorldSettings.ini, notDefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. - Perform a full stop and start; reconnecting without restarting is insufficient.
The server fails to start after an edit
- Restore the last known-good backup and start the server to confirm the diagnosis.
- Compare the edited line with the template for missing commas, quotation marks, the opening expression, or the closing parenthesis.
- Reapply one parameter at a time, restarting after each small change.
- Use the startup output to identify the first reported configuration error, if one is shown.
Only one option appears ineffective
- Check the parameter spelling and capitalization against the template.

Higher spawn settings cause poor performance

- Keep the backup and change log until the new configuration has run successfully.
This procedure also makes rollback straightforward: stop the server, replace the live file with the previous backup, and start again. Never overwrite your only known-good copy while experimenting.
Which documentation should you trust?

The retrieved version information identifies that page as reporting version 1.0.4. Use the older page only when you are deliberately administering that historical release. For a current server, compare the template generated by your installed build with the current documentation before copying an example from a guide. Community pages can explain the one-line format and highlight frequently edited names, but they may disagree about caps, defaults, or newly added parameters.

The names commonly used for identity, access, progression, capture, and spawn-rate changes are useful signposts, but the available documentation does not establish every default, maximum, or API-related default state. In particular, treat claims about a universal 32-player cap, experience-rate caps, RCON defaults, and REST API defaults as unverified until the current Pocketpair reference for your installed version confirms them.
