Before exposing any container port, account for Docker’s firewall behavior: published ports can bypass ordinary UFW or firewalld rules.

Check that your Debian VPS is supported
Docker’s Debian installation guidance currently lists Debian 13 (Trixie) as the stable release and Debian 12 (Bookworm) as oldstable. The documented architectures are x86_64 (amd64), armhf (arm/v7), arm64, and ppc64le.

|---|---|
| Debian release | Debian 13 (Trixie) or Debian 12 (Bookworm) is the clearest supported path. |
| CPU architecture | amd64, arm64, armhf, or ppc64le. |
| Privileges | An account with sudo access, or the root account for the installation steps. |
| Init system | Most VPS images use systemd; service commands below assume it is available. |
On a Debian derivative, Docker says to follow the Debian instructions while substituting the derivative’s release version where the instructions ask for a Debian codename. Derivatives can change package names, repository compatibility, or service behavior, so do not blindly use the Trixie or Bookworm codename unless your distribution actually reports it.
Confirm the release and architecture before changing APT sources:

cat /etc/os-release
dpkg --print-architecture
uname -m
The first command shows the distribution’s release metadata. The second reports the architecture used by Debian packages; the third is a kernel-level cross-check.
Prepare the VPS before installing Docker
Update package metadata
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
Read the upgrade list before accepting it. A kernel or system-library upgrade may require a reboot, and it is easier to deal with that before introducing a container runtime.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Remove conflicting Docker packages
Debian may provide unofficial or distribution-supplied Docker packages. Docker warns that these can conflict with packages from its official repository. Remove conflicting packages first rather than trying to repair a mixed installation.
sudo apt remove docker.io docker-compose docker-doc podman-docker containerd runc
A package that is not installed is harmless in this command. If your VPS image uses a different package name, remove only the package that actually owns the old Docker or containerd installation. Do not delete /var/lib/docker merely to resolve a package conflict; that directory can contain images, volumes, and container data.
Install repository prerequisites
sudo apt install ca-certificates curl
The official repository flow also requires a keyring directory and Docker’s signing key. Create the directory with restrictive permissions, download the key using Docker’s current Debian instructions, and make the key readable by APT. Then add Docker’s repository entry for the codename reported by /etc/os-release and run sudo apt update again.
Do not substitute a different Debian codename because it looks newer. A repository built for the wrong release can produce unsatisfiable dependencies or install libraries intended for another Debian generation. If your derivative does not identify itself with a Debian-compatible codename, use the derivative-specific guidance rather than guessing.
Install Docker Engine from Docker’s APT repository
After the official repository and signing key are configured, install the Engine and its command-line and runtime components. The package set commonly shown in Docker’s Debian repository flow is:

sudo apt install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
Package names can change as Docker updates its packaging, and the exact set for a newly released Debian version should be checked against Docker’s live Debian installation instructions. If APT reports that one of these packages cannot be located, first check the repository file, codename, architecture, and the output of sudo apt update; do not install similarly named packages from an unrelated repository.
Confirm that the service is running
sudo systemctl status docker --no-pager
A healthy service normally shows an active state. If it is stopped, start it and inspect the journal if startup fails:
sudo systemctl start docker
sudo journalctl -u docker --no-pager -n 100
Errors about storage, an invalid daemon configuration, or a port already in use need to be fixed before running containers. Keep the journal output when contacting your VPS provider or troubleshooting a custom image.
Verify the installation with a test container
Run Docker’s disposable verification image:
sudo docker run --rm hello-world
The command downloads the image if it is not present, creates a temporary container, prints a confirmation message, and removes the container because of --rm. A successful result proves that the client can reach the daemon, the daemon can create a container, and the image can be pulled from a registry.
If the command fails, separate the failure into three questions:
- Can the client reach the daemon? A message about the Docker socket usually means the service is stopped or your user lacks permission.
- Can the daemon reach the registry? DNS, outbound firewall policy, a proxy, or provider egress restrictions can prevent an image download.
- Can the kernel run containers? Very restricted VPS virtualization can block required namespaces, cgroups, or filesystem features; ask the provider what container support is available.
Use Docker without typing sudo
Docker’s daemon listens on a Unix socket owned by the docker group. Some Debian images create that group automatically; others do not.
Add your login to the docker group
getent group docker || sudo groupadd docker
sudo usermod -aG docker "$USER"
Log out of the VPS and log back in so the new group membership reaches the login session. Opening another terminal from the same session is not sufficient because existing processes retain their old group credentials. For immediate access in only the current shell, run:

Now verify the non-root path:

Understand the security trade-off
Membership in the docker group is effectively root-level access on the host. A user who can control the Docker daemon can start a container with powerful mounts or privileges and use it to access host resources. Give this membership only to trusted administrators.
If that privilege is too broad, investigate Docker’s rootless mode instead. Rootless operation runs the daemon and containers as an unprivileged user, but it has its own prerequisites, networking behavior, and feature limitations. Do not add a user to the docker group merely to avoid sudo if the account is not trusted with host administration.
Make Docker start after a reboot
On Debian and Ubuntu, Docker’s service starts on boot by default in the normal package setup. Verify rather than assuming, particularly after installing from a customized VPS image:
systemctl is-enabled docker
systemctl status docker --no-pager
On other systemd-based distributions, Docker’s guidance is to enable both the Docker and containerd services:
sudo systemctl enable docker.service
sudo systemctl enable containerd.service
To enable and start them immediately, use:
sudo systemctl enable --now docker.service
sudo systemctl enable --now containerd.service
Some package configurations use socket activation, so a service can appear differently before the first client connection. Recheck with systemctl status docker after a reboot, then run docker ps to confirm that the client can connect.
Run your first useful containers
Inspect the local installation
docker version
docker info
docker ps
docker images
docker version reports client and server information, which helps identify a client-daemon mismatch. docker info displays storage, runtime, and resource details. docker ps lists running containers; add -a to include stopped containers. docker images lists locally cached images.
Publish a web service carefully
A typical test container might publish a service port:

docker run -d --name web-test -p 127.0.0.1:8080:80 nginx
This example binds the container’s port 80 to port 8080 on the VPS loopback address, so it is reachable from the VPS itself but not directly from the public internet. Check it locally with:
curl http://127.0.0.1:8080
When you intentionally need public access, bind to the VPS’s public interface or all interfaces and place an authenticated, patched application behind an appropriate reverse proxy. Remove the test service when finished:
docker stop web-test
docker rm web-test
Keep data outside the container layer
Containers are replaceable. Store databases, uploads, and other durable data in named volumes or carefully selected host mounts, and document ownership and backup procedures. Removing a container should not be your data-management strategy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Docker Compose for multi-container applications
The Compose plugin is installed as docker-compose-plugin in the package set commonly used with Docker’s official repository. The modern command is docker compose (with a space), not the older standalone docker-compose executable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A Compose project is defined by a YAML file, commonly named compose.yaml. From the directory containing that file:
docker compose config
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps
docker compose logs --follow
docker compose down
configvalidates and renders the configuration before deployment.up -dcreates or recreates services in the background.psshows service state and published ports.logs --followstreams service output for diagnosis.downstops and removes the project’s containers and network; named volumes are retained unless you explicitly request their removal.
Keep secrets out of a publicly readable Compose file. Use a protected environment file or a secrets mechanism appropriate to the application, and restrict permissions on files containing credentials.
Understand the VPS firewall caveat
Docker’s Debian documentation warns that published container ports can bypass UFW or firewalld rules. On a public VPS, a command such as -p 0.0.0.0:8080:80 can therefore make a service reachable even when your normal firewall policy says that port 8080 is denied.
Best Value
Use one of these controls before publishing a service:
- Bind development and internal services to
127.0.0.1and expose them through a deliberately configured reverse proxy. - Publish only the ports that must be public, and verify reachability from an external network rather than trusting the UFW rule list.
- Place filtering rules in Docker’s
DOCKER-USERchain when you need host-level restrictions that remain effective for forwarded container traffic. - Apply equivalent network controls in your VPS provider’s security-group or network-firewall layer where available.
After every change, inspect listening sockets and test from both the VPS and an outside host. A service that responds locally is not necessarily exposed publicly, and a service that appears blocked by UFW may still be reachable through Docker’s forwarding rules.
Troubleshoot common Debian VPS failures
“Permission denied” on the Docker socket
Run sudo systemctl status docker first. If the daemon is active, check id for the docker group. Log out and back in, or use newgrp docker for the current shell. Do not repeatedly change socket permissions; that creates a fragile and unsafe workaround.
APT cannot locate docker-ce
Inspect the repository entry and rerun sudo apt update. Confirm that the codename matches the VPS release, the architecture is supported, the signing key is readable, and the repository was not disabled by an APT error. On a derivative, return to the Debian-derivative instructions rather than forcing a Debian codename.
The daemon will not start
Read the recent service log with sudo journalctl -u docker -n 100 --no-pager. Look for malformed daemon configuration, storage-driver errors, unsupported virtualization, or a conflict with another container runtime. Correct the first reported configuration error, then restart and recheck the status.

List the container’s port mapping with docker ps, then inspect host filtering in the DOCKER-USER chain and the VPS provider’s network firewall. Binding to loopback is the quickest way to make a service private while you redesign the rule set.
Containers disappear after a reboot
Check whether the container was created with a restart policy or managed by Compose. Docker starting successfully does not automatically restart every container. For a service that should return after a reboot, define an explicit restart policy and keep its configuration and data in a managed project directory.
Operate Docker safely on a rented server
- Patch Debian, Docker Engine, images, and application dependencies on a schedule.
- Pull images from sources you trust and pin production deployments to reviewed tags or digests rather than silently accepting unexpected updates.
- Do not run untrusted workloads with host mounts, privileged mode, or access to the Docker socket.
- Back up named volumes and host-mounted data independently of the container lifecycle, then test restoration.
- Monitor disk usage; image layers, stopped containers, build cache, and logs can fill a small VPS even when no application appears busy.
- Record every public port and its owner so an old test container cannot become an unnoticed internet service.
Removing Docker later
Stop and remove the applications you no longer need before removing the Engine packages. Package removal does not automatically mean that images, volumes, or application data should be deleted. Treat those directories as production data until you have confirmed backups and retention requirements.
sudo apt remove docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
Before any broader cleanup, inventory containers, images, networks, and volumes with Docker’s listing commands. Delete data only when you explicitly intend to do so; an accidental volume purge is irreversible without a backup.
The Bottom Line
Install Docker Engine from Docker’s official Debian repository, verify it with hello-world, use the docker group only for trusted administrators, confirm service startup after reboot, and treat every published port as potentially public until Docker-aware firewall rules prove otherwise.
