Windows 11 on Arm can emulate many x86 and x64 games, but an installer working does not guarantee the game will launch or play properly: anti-cheat software and other kernel-mode drivers are common compatibility barriers. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app is now available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs and supports local downloads for a broad, changing selection of titles; Steam and other launchers still require game-by-game checks.
Before installing, check whether the game can run
Windows 11 on Arm can emulate x86 and x64 applications. On supported Arm devices, Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism, Microsoft’s emulation technology. Some Prism performance features require hardware capabilities found on Snapdragon X series processors, so the experience can vary by device. See Microsoft’s guide to how emulation works on Arm.

Emulation has an important limit: it covers user-mode application code, not kernel-mode drivers. A game that depends on an anti-cheat driver not designed for Arm PCs may fail to launch or block multiplayer, even if the game itself installs. Microsoft explains the limitation in its Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ.
- Check the game publisher’s Windows on Arm guidance before buying or installing, especially for multiplayer games.
- Use Works on WoA, which Microsoft identifies as an evolving third-party compatibility resource that it contributes data to. Treat its listings as useful signals, not guarantees.
- Check the game’s stated operating-system and hardware requirements. A standard Windows requirement is not, by itself, certification that the game works on Arm.
Compatibility can change as Windows, games, and anti-cheat software are updated. A successful download is only evidence that installation completed, not that the game is fully playable.

Keep a game in the storefront where you bought or claimed it: that client handles its installation, files, and updates. Catalog size and compatibility claims are not directly comparable across launchers.
Install a game with the Xbox PC app
Microsoft announced public availability of the Xbox PC app on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs on January 21, 2026. It said users could download a wide range of catalog titles for local play. Microsoft also reported that more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with these PCs at that time. That dated vendor figure is not a guarantee for every game, device, or later date.
- Install or update the Xbox PC app, then sign in with the account that owns the game or has the relevant subscription.
- Find the title in the catalog or your library. Check whether the game is supported for local play on your device.
- For a locally supported title, choose Install and let the Xbox PC app manage the download.
- Open the app to check download progress and manage available updates.
Microsoft’s January 21, 2026 announcement says: “Players can now download and enjoy a wide range of titles from the Xbox PC app game catalog on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs.” The same announcement describes the more-than-85% Game Pass compatibility figure as a current status and says Microsoft was working with partners to expand support.

For a title that is not supported locally, Microsoft says Xbox Cloud Gaming remains an option where the account, region, and connection allow it. Availability and app details can change.
Install and update games in Steam
- Download Steam from Valve’s official Steam installation instructions, install the client, and sign in.
- Open Library, select a game you own, and choose Install.
- After installation, open Library > game Properties > Updates to choose the game’s automatic-update behavior. Steam offers options including keeping it updated, updating only when launched, or giving it high priority.
- Use Steam’s Download Manager to monitor queued downloads and updates.
Valve advises checking both a game’s supported operating systems and its hardware requirements. Its platform availability guidance does not establish that a conventional Windows game is Arm-compatible. Verify Arm-specific support with the publisher or a compatibility listing before relying on it.
Steam supports alternate library folders and moving installed games to another folder. That can help if the internal drive is full; an external drive is optional, and performance may differ from internal storage.

Install through other publishers’ launchers
If the game belongs to another store or publisher account, install it through that service’s own launcher and let the same launcher handle updates. Launcher screens and compatibility policies vary, so follow the publisher’s current instructions rather than assuming Steam or Xbox steps apply. Check the publisher’s Arm and anti-cheat guidance before installing.
Fix Steam download or update errors
These steps address client, download, disk, or local-file problems. They cannot make a game compatible if it relies on an unsupported driver or other software.
- Restart the computer and Steam client.
- Clear Steam’s download cache.
- Repair the Steam library folder.
- Verify the game’s local files.
- Check for and install available Windows updates.
Valve documents these options in its Steam update and installation troubleshooting guide. If the game installs but will not launch, or multiplayer is unavailable, check the publisher’s Windows on Arm and anti-cheat support rather than repeatedly reinstalling files.
