Before installing: confirm ownership and check your PC
Use the PC storefront and account where you own the game. CD PROJEKT RED’s support materials cover Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net. The normal route is to find the game in that client’s library and use its install and update controls; exact button labels can vary by client.

CD PROJEKT RED’s 2026 PC requirements notice lists the following upcoming minimums. These are stated requirements, not independently measured performance results, and the notice does not give an effective date.

CD PROJEKT RED says the game may continue to run on Windows 10, but the studio will no longer develop or test on that operating system and cannot guarantee future compatibility or performance. Its notice says: “That doesn’t mean that the game will stop running on Windows 10 with the next game update.” This refers to the upcoming requirements transition; it is not a promise of ongoing Windows 10 support.

Install and launch the game
- Sign in to the storefront account that owns The Witcher 3.
- Open the client’s game library, select The Witcher 3, and use its install control. Choose an install location with enough space for the game.
- Allow the storefront to download and update the game before launching it from the library.
CD PROJEKT RED’s current support materials focus on launcher-based installations and recovery. The older PC manual describes an original disc installation, so its steps should not be treated as current instructions for Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, or Battle.net.
Should you use the current version or Classic?
The latest version is the one CD PROJEKT RED identifies as fully supported. Choose Classic only if you have a specific compatibility reason, such as needing an earlier build for a setup that depends on it; older versions can differ in compatibility and content. The support information does not provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison of builds.

DirectX 11 or DirectX 12?
Use the DirectX guidance for the particular build you are installing. The old PC manual says DirectX 11 is necessary for the version it covers. CD PROJEKT RED’s upcoming requirements notice says the game will operate exclusively with DirectX 12 under those requirements. The manual is historical guidance, not a substitute for the newer requirements notice or your storefront’s current installation flow.
How to verify The Witcher 3 game files
If the game will not launch or you suspect damaged files, verify or repair the installation in the storefront where you own it. CD PROJEKT RED documents these client paths:
- GOG Galaxy: Customize → Manage installation → Verify/Repair.
- Steam: Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity.
- Epic Games Launcher: Three dots beside the game → Manage → Verify.
- Battle.net: Select the cog icon → Scan and Repair.
If verification does not resolve the issue, check whether your PC meets the requirements for the build you are using and whether your graphics drivers are current. CD PROJEKT RED’s launch-support guidance includes additional troubleshooting, but verification is the appropriate first storefront repair step.

- Copy the contents of the save folder to a safe location outside the game’s folders.
- Disable cloud saves in your storefront client for the duration of the procedure.
- Uninstall the game using the owning storefront.
- Remove the client’s game folder and the local Witcher 3 Documents folder.
- Restart the PC, then reinstall the game without mods.
- Restore the backed-up saves to the save folder. Re-enable cloud saves afterward if you use them.
If Windows permissions cause installation problems, CD PROJEKT RED gives installing at the drive root as an example workaround. Check that the chosen drive has sufficient space and is suitable for the installation.

What to know about Remastered and existing saves
CD PROJEKT RED says existing saves are compatible with Remastered, but character skills reset; existing achievements carry over. Availability of earlier versions depends on storefront, so check the platform-specific options above before changing builds.
