A small leak can reduce low-frequency output; tip size, angle and seating all affect whether the seal holds. Position can also alter measured response, but insertion-depth findings from clinical earphones are not a universal fit guide for consumer earbuds.
Why do earbuds lose bass when the seal breaks?
Insert-style earbuds rely on a tip that sits snugly at the ear-canal opening. If air escapes around the tip, low-frequency sound can drop noticeably, making music seem thin. Shure’s SE215 guide identifies weak bass as a sign that its sleeve may not be forming a tight seal, and recommends gently adjusting the fit or trying another sleeve size. That guidance is specific to the SE215, but it matches the acoustic mechanism described in measurements of insert earphones.

An Audio Engineering Society paper reports that, in its insert-earphone measurements, a leak 0.5 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm long reduced bass at 50 Hz by approximately 15 dB. That is a result for the paper’s equipment and test conditions—not a guaranteed change for every consumer earbud or every leak. Read the AES paper.
How do tip size, angle and seating affect sound?
Tip size and the way an earbud sits work together: a tip that is too small or poorly seated may leak, while a secure, comfortable fit is more likely to keep the seal stable. JBL advises trying different tip sizes and rotating an in-ear headphone to find a solid fit. Sennheiser likewise recommends testing adapter sizes for sound quality and comfort, with the tips fitting snugly. These are manufacturers’ fit instructions, not independent comparative tests. Left and right ears do not have to use matching tip sizes if different sizes are needed for a comfortable, stable seal. Replacement tips also need to fit the exact earbud nozzle; check compatibility, retention, comfort and whether the earbuds still fit in their charging case.
Can insertion depth change sound quality?
Yes, position can affect measured response, but the size and nature of the effect depend on the earphone and how it is measured. Interacoustics’ ER-2 datasheet for a clinical insert earphone calls for consistent placement and shows response variation with insertion depth, particularly above 8 kHz. Its calibrated clinical device and specified foam tip do not establish an ideal insertion distance for consumer earbuds. See the Interacoustics datasheet.

A 2000 study by Dean and Martin tested 20 individuals for occlusion effects using shallow and deep foam-tip insert-earphone placement. Its abstract concludes that deep insertion is practical for clinical bone-conduction measurements; it does not prescribe consumer-earbud depth or quantify ordinary music-listening changes. How should you check a fit that sounds thin or uneven?
- Check that both earbuds are seated similarly and that each tip is fully attached.
- Play familiar audio at a moderate level. Gently adjust each earbud’s angle and position without pushing it forcefully into the canal. If bass changes as the fit shifts, that suggests the seal may be involved, but it does not prove that fit is the only cause of uneven sound.
- If one side feels loose or seems to leak, try the next supplied tip size on that ear. Different ears may need different sizes.
- Stop if insertion is uncomfortable and follow the instructions for your specific model. Shure explicitly warns SE215 users not to push the sleeve beyond the ear-canal opening.

How tight should earbuds fit?
A good fit should feel secure and comfortable, not painful or forceful. The tip should stay in place during ordinary movement and seal without needing to be pushed deeply into the canal. If maintaining the fit requires pressure or causes discomfort, stop and consult the instructions for that model rather than inserting it farther.

There is no model-independent response curve established here for how every tip changes bass, mids or treble. Choose compatible tips by fit and comfort rather than assuming that a particular material or size will sound best for everyone.
