One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo install an Arlo Ultra system, first confirm that your camera and SmartHub or Base Station are compatible, then add the hub in the Arlo Secure app, pair each camera one at a time, and test live view before mounting. Arlo Ultra cameras require a hub; they do not set up as ordinary direct-to-Wi-Fi cameras.
Before you begin: check the camera and hub models
Read the model labels on the camera and hub before setup or buying replacement hardware. Arlo Ultra 3rd Gen requires a VMB5000 or VMB4540 SmartHub. Other Ultra generations may have different compatibility, so compare the exact models with Arlo’s SmartHub and Base Station compatibility list rather than assuming any Arlo base station will work.

Charge the rechargeable battery according to the app and the manual for your camera generation. The original Ultra manual says its supplied battery is partially charged and recommends charging it fully before use. For that model, seat the battery and camera in the housing until they click into place; for newer models, follow their own instructions.

Set up the SmartHub or Base Station first
Connect the hub to your router by Ethernet before plugging it into power. Arlo’s hub setup instructions use this order so the hub can connect to the network as it starts.

- Complete the remaining steps shown in the app.
Add and sync each Ultra camera
Use the Ultra-specific camera flow in the app, not a direct-Wi-Fi setup path. Add cameras individually so that each pairing attempt is easy to identify and troubleshoot.
- In the app, open Devices, tap Add, choose Cameras, then Ultra Series.
- Select the exact camera model and follow the battery or charging prompts.
- Choose the SmartHub or Base Station you just installed.
- Keep the camera about 3–10 feet (1–3 meters) from the hub during pairing, as recommended in Arlo’s camera setup and sync guidance.
- Follow the app’s instructions. Ultra cameras generally begin syncing when the battery is inserted. If the app or that model’s manual asks you to press the camera’s Sync button, do so as directed.
- Wait for the app to confirm setup, then repeat the process for the next camera.
For Ultra 3rd Gen, make sure the SmartHub is online before adding the camera. If you have more than one hub, Arlo’s third-generation setup instructions say to select the hub closest to the planned camera location. The app may prompt you to press the Sync button if the camera LED is not blinking blue or pairing does not complete.

Test the camera before choosing its final location
Open the camera’s live stream in the app and check that the picture appears before mounting it. This confirms that pairing is complete while the camera is still easy to reach.
The original Ultra manual describes an outdoor screw mount and supplied drywall anchors for drywall. Package contents can vary by model and kit, so check the hardware you actually received and the manual for your camera before drilling or choosing fasteners. Once the camera is mounted, adjust framing in live view and configure motion detection and notifications in the app.

- Unrivaled Precision & Clarity: See it all with a 180º Field of View & 4K HDR, capturing facial features to ID intruders, car imperfections, & low-light scenes. Bright whites & deep blacks reveal sharp detail for clarity you can trust.
Choose local or cloud 4K storage separately
Pairing and live view do not by themselves mean 4K recordings are being stored. For the original Ultra, the user manual says local 4K recording uses a microSD card in the SmartHub. It recommends an average upload speed of 3 Mbps per Ultra camera for basic 4K use; that is the manual’s model-specific recommendation, not a guarantee for every network or current camera generation.
The original manual also describes cloud storage of 4K motion clips as an add-on service. Arlo plan availability and terms can change, so check the current options in your account or app. Treat local storage as a separate setup choice and follow the instructions for your specific SmartHub and camera.

If an Ultra camera will not sync
Work through these checks in order before restarting the whole system:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm hub status and compatibility. The hub must be installed and online, and its exact model must support your camera generation. Check Arlo’s compatibility list.
- Check the battery. Make sure it has sufficient charge and is seated correctly.
- Sync only one camera at a time. Wait for one camera’s setup to finish before starting another.
- Verify the app selections. Check the correct Location, choose Ultra Series and the exact model, and select the installed SmartHub or Base Station—not a direct-Wi-Fi option.
- Move closer for pairing. Keep the camera 3–10 feet (1–3 meters) from the hub while syncing.
- Use the camera Sync button only when instructed. Many Ultra cameras start syncing when their battery is inserted; follow the app or model-specific manual if it requests a button press.
- If using a multi-LED Base Station, try its Sync button carefully. Arlo warns against holding it too long. If the hub indicates amber after an overly long press, wait 15 minutes before trying again.
If pairing still fails, use the app’s Need Help option or the support flow for your exact camera model.
