There is no single U.S. age at which teens can skateboard without a helmet: requirements depend on the state or city, the rider’s age, and whether they are on a public street, path, trail, or other covered property. For safety, choose a helmet labeled for skateboarding, fit and fasten it correctly, and replace it after a serious crash or if damaged.
Do teens have to wear a helmet when skateboarding?
It depends on where they ride. State examples show different age limits and rules for public places, and local ordinances may add requirements. These examples are not a complete inventory of U.S. law. Check the current state statute and city or county rules for the places your teen uses.

What kind of helmet is safe for skateboarding?
Use a helmet made and labeled for the activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that if a multi-use helmet is used for skateboarding, it should have an ASTM label certifying it for skateboarding. Read the helmet’s exact label and manufacturer instructions alongside the applicable local law; a generic bicycle-helmet label alone does not establish skateboard certification or compliance with every skateboarding law. 1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) explains that helmets marketed exclusively for skateboarding are not covered by the federal requirements for bicycle helmets. CPSC’s bicycle-helmet testing addresses peripheral vision, positional stability, retention strength, and impact attenuation, but a bicycle label should not be treated as blanket proof of skateboard approval. How to check a skateboard helmet’s fit
Take your teen to try on a helmet if possible. Head sizes and helmet sizing vary by brand, so measure and use the specific manufacturer’s size chart. CDC recommends measuring around the head just above the eyebrows and ears. The helmet should feel snug all around without gaps, and the rider should be able to see forward and side-to-side. - Position the helmet so the front rim aligns with the eyebrows. It should not sit too high or low, and the back should not touch the top of the neck.
- Adjust the side straps so they form a V under and slightly in front of the ears.
- Center and snug the chin strap, then fasten it. The helmet should not shift back-to-front or side-to-side.
- Check fit with the hairstyle your teen will wear while riding.
When should a skateboard helmet be replaced?
CDC says skateboard helmets can withstand more than one very minor hit, but a helmet must be replaced if it has been in a serious crash or is damaged. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on useful life, maintenance, and whether reconditioning is allowed; the CDC fact sheet does not establish one universal calendar replacement interval. What a helmet can—and cannot—do
“There is no concussion-proof helmet, but a helmet can help protect your child or teen from a serious brain or head injury,” the CDC says in its HEADS UP helmet safety guidance, updated July 28, 2025. A helmet reduces risk; it cannot guarantee that a rider will avoid a concussion or other injury. Correct activity certification, fit, maintenance, and consistent use all matter. Other skateboard safety checks
CPSC recommends protective gear in addition to a helmet. Wrist guards, knee and elbow pads, and flat-soled shoes can add protection, but do not replace a properly fitted helmet or compliance with local law. CPSC Skateboard Safety Alert
