A DLSS feature mod is installed beside a game’s main executable, not automatically in the launcher’s library folder. The safe process is game-specific: verify that the exact game and mod release are compatible, back up every original file, follow that project’s current instructions, and record every file added or replaced. For OptiScaler, this commonly means extracting files into an Unreal game’s Binaries/Win64 or Binaries/WinGDK directory and running the supplied setup batch file. DLSS Enabler uses a different method, including renaming its DLL to a filename the game accepts. Never assume instructions for one project apply to another.
Use these mods only where the game’s rules permit them. The OptiScaler project README warns: “Do not use this mod with online games. It may trigger anti-cheat software and cause bans!” A DLL loading successfully does not mean an online publisher allows it.

Before you install: identify the mod, game and risk
“DLSS mod” is not one standardized package. Projects can replace or intercept different upscaling paths, expose features the game does not show in its menu, or translate one supported input into another output. Their files, compatibility, setup and removal procedures differ. Start by naming the exact project, release version and game executable you will modify.

Open the mod’s current compatibility list and read the complete entry for your title, including any linked notes. The community compatibility page for OptiScaler says it supports most games with DLSS 2+, FSR2+ or XeSS, but it also explicitly says the list is incomplete. “Most” is not a guarantee for your game. The entry may identify a tested graphics API, required settings, workarounds, known visual problems or a particular executable location.

- Confirm the game version and edition match the compatibility note.
- Check whether the title uses DirectX 11, DirectX 12 or Vulkan and whether the mod supports that path for your feature.
- Read notes about anti-cheat, launchers, overlays, required command-line options and known crashes.
- Do not treat an unlisted game as safe merely because another title using the same engine works.
Understand what OptiScaler actually does
OptiScaler describes itself as middleware. It intercepts the upscaler input selected by a game and redirects it to an output selected in its overlay. The result depends on the game’s integration, API and native upscaler support; DirectX 11, DirectX 12 and Vulkan can behave differently. A technically compatible DLL does not promise a particular frame-rate gain, image quality or feature set.
Keep online games out of the experiment
OptiScaler’s maintainers specifically warn against online games because anti-cheat may trigger and cause bans. Apply a mod only to an offline or single-player context where the game’s rules permit it. Do not infer permission from the fact that the game starts, the overlay appears or the DLL is loadable. If a title uses an anti-cheat service, the conservative choice is not to modify its files.
Download from a legitimate project location
Use the distribution location identified by the project’s own repository or documentation, and make sure the instructions correspond to the release you downloaded. OptiScaler says it is free and warns that fake sites and unofficial manager applications exist. The project contributors state: “We DON’T have an official manager app, so please be careful when downloading or using them!” Treat a download that arrives through an unknown “one-click manager,” a repacked installer or a video description as untrusted until the project itself identifies it.

- Match the archive or release tag to the instructions you are reading.
- Keep the original archive until you have confirmed the installation works, in case you need to compare files.
- Scan downloads with your normal security tools and do not run an executable that the project does not document.
- Do not pay for a copy of a project that the project identifies as free.
Find the real game executable directory
The correct destination is the directory containing the game’s main executable, not simply the folder shown by a launcher as the game library. Project documentation may call this the executable directory. The exact path varies by installation, store and game.
Use the launcher as a starting point
- Close the game completely. Also close launchers or overlays that may keep files open.
- Open the launcher’s installed-game management screen and choose its option to browse or open the installation folder.
- Search the opened folder for the game’s executable identified by the mod’s compatibility note. If the folder contains several executables, use the one the note names rather than guessing.
- Open the executable’s Properties or file details if you need to confirm it is the game binary, then leave that directory open for the installation.
Unreal Engine directory warning
In Unreal Engine games, the executable directory is often a path such as Binaries/Win64 or Binaries/WinGDK. It is commonly not the engine’s Engine folder. Copying files into an engine-wide directory can affect the wrong component and will not satisfy a game-specific loader. Follow the exact location in the project’s wiki for your title.
Make the change reversible before copying files
Back up the original state before you extract anything. The official pages do not provide one universal backup or removal checklist for every DLSS mod, so create your own precise record.

- Close the game and launcher.
- In the executable directory, list files that already exist and are likely to be touched, including DLLs named in the mod instructions.
- Copy any original file that the instructions say will be replaced to a separate backup folder outside the game directory. Preserve its exact filename.
- Record the game path, mod name, release version, date and every file you add, rename, replace or remove. A plain text file is sufficient.
- Keep the backup and record until the game has launched normally without the mod, or until you have restored the game through verification.
Do not pre-emptively delete DLLs because their names look related to upscaling. A similarly named file may belong to the game, graphics driver integration or another legitimate component.

These steps apply to OptiScaler, not to every DLSS-related project. Use the current OptiScaler wiki and the game’s compatibility entry if they differ from this overview.
- Download the release from the project-identified legitimate location.
- Extract the archive without changing its internal filenames.
- Copy the required OptiScaler files beside the game’s main executable. For many Unreal Engine games this is
Binaries/Win64orBinaries/WinGDK, notEngine; your game’s entry may specify another directory. - Run the appropriate setup batch file supplied with that release. The filename can vary by game, so do not substitute a batch file intended for another title.
- Read the setup output and compare the files it touched with your record. If the script reports an unsupported path, missing DLL or other error, stop rather than launching repeatedly.
- If automated setup fails, use the project’s manual-installation instructions. Manual steps can require a different proxy filename or API-specific arrangement; copy only what the exact game entry requests.
Start the game only after the files and setup result match the documented arrangement. Test in an offline or single-player session permitted by the game. Observe whether the expected overlay or feature appears, but do not treat a successful launch as proof that an online mode is safe.

Install DLSS Enabler
DLSS Enabler has a distinct procedure. Do not apply OptiScaler’s setup-batch instructions to it.
- Read the current DLSS Enabler instructions for your game and release.
- Before copying anything, remove conflicting older files identified by those instructions. The cited guidance specifically names older DLSS Enabler files, LukeFZ mods and dummy
nvapi64.dllfiles. Remove only the files that the instructions identify and that your record confirms are present. - Rename the DLSS Enabler’s single DLL to the filename accepted by the game, as specified for that title. The accepted name is not universal.
- Place the renamed DLL beside the game’s main executable.
- Launch only in a permitted offline or single-player context and check the project’s stated indicators that the feature loaded.
Do not leave two competing proxy DLLs in the directory. If the game fails to start after a rename, close it, restore the recorded original filename or backup and re-check the exact compatibility note instead of trying random DLL names.

There is no evidence that one project is universally safer or better. Choose based on the game’s explicit compatibility, the feature you need, its graphics API and native upscaler, the current installation/removal instructions and whether anti-cheat is involved.
How to remove a DLSS feature mod safely
Removal is mod- and game-specific. The safest general method is to reverse only the changes you recorded, not to delete every DLL with “DLSS,” “nvapi” or “upscaler” in its name.
- Close the game, launcher and overlays.
- Open the same executable directory used for installation.
- Consult the mod’s own uninstall or removal instructions, if the current release provides them.
- Remove only files your record shows were added by the mod.
- For a file that the mod replaced, restore the backed-up original with its original name. Do not leave both the backup copy and replacement in the active directory under competing names.
- Undo documented renames, including a DLSS Enabler DLL rename, before deleting or restoring the file.
- Check for setup-created configuration files or logs only if the project’s instructions identify them as removable; do not erase unrelated game settings.
- Launch the game in its normal unmodified mode and confirm that it reaches the menu and loads a save or test scene.
The reviewed OptiScaler automated-install page does not publish a general user-facing uninstall inventory for every game and version. That is why a guessed list of files is unsafe: a filename can vary by API, game build or release, and a pre-existing file may be required by the game.
If you did not make a file record
Do not start deleting arbitrary DLLs. Re-read the exact release instructions, compare the directory with a clean installation or a trusted backup, and use the project’s documented removal path. If you still cannot identify the changes, use the launcher’s file-verification or repair option, or reinstall the game. Those are general recovery routes rather than a universal mod-uninstall procedure, and they may overwrite local saves, configuration or other modifications depending on the launcher.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
The game does not start
- Confirm the files are beside the correct executable, not in the launcher root or Unreal
Enginefolder. - Undo the last change using your backup and test the unmodified game.
- Check that you followed the title’s API and release-specific instructions.
- For OptiScaler, replace a failed automated setup with the documented manual procedure rather than mixing files from different releases.
- Remove conflicts only when the project names them; DLSS Enabler’s instructions specifically call out older DLSS Enabler files, LukeFZ mods and dummy
nvapi64.dll.
The feature or overlay is missing
- Verify that the game’s compatibility entry lists the feature and graphics API you are using.
- Check the game’s native upscaler setting and any required in-game mode described by the project.
- Confirm the setup batch file was the one intended for your game, or repeat the manual steps exactly.
- Do not assume that a clean launch means the mod loaded; inspect the project’s documented status indicator or log.
The game works offline but online play is blocked or risky
Do not attempt to bypass anti-cheat or conceal the mod. Remove it, restore the backed-up originals and verify the unmodified installation. OptiScaler’s warning is explicit about potential bans; publisher rules take precedence over any technical workaround.
Verification replaced the mod but the game still fails
Close the launcher, restore the original files from your backup if they were not repaired, then run verification again. If the directory remains inconsistent, use a clean reinstall while preserving saves and configuration only when you know where the game stores them. Reinstalling can remove every local modification, including unrelated tweaks.
What a safe installation record should contain
- Game title, edition, build and installation path.
- Mod project and exact release identifier.
- Compatibility entry, graphics API and required in-game settings.
- Every pre-existing file backed up, with its original name.
- Every file added, replaced, renamed or removed.
- The setup batch file or manual procedure used.
- The date and result of an offline launch test.
- The restoration date and verification result when you remove the mod.
This record turns removal into a controlled reversal and makes it easier to recover after a game update. An update can replace, rename or add binaries, so re-check compatibility before reinstalling a mod after every major game patch.
