Start with the question you want the map to answer: Nebraska’s 2026 statewide surficial map shows materials at the land surface, while the older statewide bedrock map shows geology beneath those materials. Use either statewide map for orientation, then search for a more detailed local or quadrangle map that covers your location and the subject you need. Neither statewide map is precise property-level evidence.
Choose the kind of geology you need
“Geologic map” can refer to maps of different materials, depths and features. Before searching, decide what you need to know:

- Surface deposits: What geologic materials occur at or near the land surface? Look for a surficial or surface-geology map. These maps can show deposits such as wind-blown sand, silt, river sediments and glacial material.
- Bedrock geology: What rock units or structures lie beneath surface deposits? Look for a bedrock geologic map.
- Bedrock surface: How does the buried upper surface of bedrock vary in elevation? A bedrock-surface map addresses a different question from a map of bedrock units.
The distinction matters in Nebraska because sediment covers more than three-quarters of the state, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2026 release. The 1986 statewide map shows bedrock geology beneath the surface; it does not depict the newer surface sediments covered by the 2026 map.
Start with the statewide maps, but treat them as regional guides

The 2026 statewide surficial map is a synthesis, not a single uniformly detailed survey. Its inputs include geologic, soil, soil-parent-material and geomorphic maps, as well as LiDAR derivatives. The final map’s scale is 1:500,000, even though some source mapping is much more detailed. Since the mid-1990s, Nebraska surficial mapping has been conducted primarily at 1:24,000 scale; the statewide synthesis combines information from scales ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:1,000,000. A detailed source does not make every part of the statewide map detailed at that source scale.

For scale, 1:500,000 means one unit on the map represents 500,000 of the same units on the ground; 1:1,000,000 is smaller-scale still, showing a larger area with less local detail. A 1:24,000 map can show more local detail, but only within its own coverage, subject and data limits.
Search for a local map that covers your location
For a county or property question, search an official geologic map catalog, including the USGS National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) and Nebraska Geological Survey catalog. Try the county name, a nearby town, the quadrangle name, and the subject—such as “surficial geology,” “bedrock,” or “bedrock surface.” A county name is a useful starting point, not proof that a map covers the whole county.

- Locate a candidate map. Search by county, nearby town or quadrangle, then add the geology type you need. A quadrangle map may be cataloged under its map-area name rather than a county name.
- Check the map footprint. Confirm that the mapped area actually includes your location. If the map covers only part of a county, it cannot answer a question elsewhere in that county.
- Read the title and legend. Confirm whether the product maps surface deposits, bedrock units, bedrock-surface configuration or something else. Similar-looking geology maps may answer different questions.
- Check scale, publication date and source information. Prefer the most relevant local map, but do not assume that a newer date alone means greater detail or that older mapping is invalid. Note the map’s scale and the materials or data it used.
- Open the format that fits your task. The NGMDB record for the 2026 statewide map links to the publication and GeMS GIS data. A downloadable GIS dataset can support inspection in GIS software; a static map sheet may be adequate for visual orientation. Check the record for the formats actually available for each local product.
The exact current workflow for searching an address in a University of Nebraska–Lincoln map viewer is not established here, so do not rely on a presumed address-search feature. Search map catalogs and verify the map extent instead.
What local examples can—and cannot—tell you
Local products demonstrate why searching by map subject matters. A 2001 USGS map of the Omaha area distinguishes artificial fill, alluvial, eolian and glacial deposits, as well as bedrock. That combination can help a reader understand mapped surface materials and geology in that map’s area, but it does not establish coverage across every Nebraska county.

The Broken Bow quadrangle map documents bedrock-surface configurations and has downloadable map and GIS files. It is useful as an example of a local product that addresses buried bedrock topography and offers data formats beyond a static sheet. It is not interchangeable with a surface-deposit map, and its existence does not guarantee that a comparable map is available for every location.
Use these products as evidence that local maps vary in both extent and purpose—not as a county-by-county coverage list. For any candidate, the title, legend, extent, scale and publication information determine whether it is suitable for your question.

How to use a map for a property question
A geologic map can show the mapped unit or feature at a location at the map’s scale. It cannot, by itself, establish the exact soil, fill, rock, groundwater, depth or subsurface conditions beneath a particular parcel. This limitation is especially important when extrapolating from a statewide map or from a local map whose scale, boundaries or subject do not match the property question.
- Use the statewide map to understand the broad regional setting.
- Use a local map only after confirming that it covers the property and depicts the feature you care about.
- Read map-unit descriptions and notes as well as the colored map; the legend explains what the mapped categories mean.
- For a consequential site decision, treat the map as background information, not a substitute for site-specific investigation or professional evaluation.
Paul Hanson, director of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Conservation and Survey Division Geologic Mapping Program, described Nebraska’s surface geology as including the Nebraska Sand Hills, loess and sediments from large river systems such as the Missouri and Platte. That range of surface materials is one reason a bedrock map and a surficial map should not be treated as interchangeable.

A quick checklist before relying on a map
- Right subject: Does it show surface deposits, bedrock units or bedrock-surface elevations—the feature you actually need?
- Right footprint: Does its mapped extent include the county area or property?
- Right scale: Is it regional context or local detail? Do not transfer a source map’s scale to a statewide synthesis.
- Right context: Have you checked publication date, legend, map notes and source data?
- Right format: Is a map sheet sufficient, or do you need a GIS dataset for closer inspection?
- Right level of certainty: Are you using the map to understand regional geology rather than claiming it proves exact parcel conditions?
