You can use an external SSD to keep game installs on Steam Deck or ROG Ally, but the setup differs: Steam Deck runs SteamOS and offers a desktop environment, while the Ally uses Windows and supports multiple PC launchers. The official guides cited here confirm those platform capabilities, but do not provide a complete external-SSD game-library walkthrough for both devices. The steps below separate confirmed manufacturer guidance from practical launcher setup.
Before you connect an external SSD
A USB-connected SSD is removable storage, not onboard expansion: the handheld must remain connected to it to access games installed there. Choose a portable USB-C external SSD, and check that its cable and connector work with your device. If you also want to charge while the drive is connected, whether you can do both depends on the handheld, adapter, or hub arrangement; a hub with power delivery is an option, not a universal requirement.

Neither Valve’s cited Steam Deck guide nor ASUS’s ROG Ally FAQ sets out a complete official procedure for installing games to an external USB SSD. In particular, do not apply the Steam Deck microSD formatting instructions to an external drive or assume its format, mount behavior, or library persistence. For these details, follow the current operating-system and launcher prompts for your device and drive.

Steam Deck: use Desktop Mode and Steam’s library controls
Valve describes Desktop Mode as functioning “like a normal PC,” where you can browse the internet, install applications, and run programs outside Steam. That establishes the desktop as the place to handle general file and application tasks; it is not, by itself, an official external-SSD game-library recipe. See the Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Install a Steam game to an external SSD
- Connect the SSD to the Deck and switch to Desktop Mode. Let SteamOS respond to any drive prompts; do not assume a particular filesystem or automatic library setup.
- In Steam, use the current storage or library-management controls to add or select a library location on the connected drive, if SteamOS and Steam offer that option for the drive. The cited Valve guide does not document the exact external-drive UI path, format requirements, or reboot persistence, so follow the prompts shown on your Deck rather than treating a path from another SteamOS version as guaranteed.
- In Steam, open the game’s install flow and choose the external-drive library when Steam offers a location choice. Wait for installation to finish before launching.
- Launch the game from Steam as usual. Keep the SSD connected while the game is installed there and in use.
Valve documents a distinct, explicit route for microSD: Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. That instruction applies to a microSD card, not a USB SSD. Valve’s guide also does not establish that an external SSD library will automatically reconnect or persist in the same way after disconnection or reboot.
ROG Ally: install through Windows launchers
The Ally runs Windows and ASUS says it supports major launchers, including Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, the EA App, and GOG Galaxy. ASUS also says downloaded games are automatically imported into Armoury Crate SE’s Game Library. Its FAQ explicitly documents installing games to microSD, but does not make the same external-USB-SSD statement. See the ROG Ally Series Frequently Asked Questions (last updated June 3, 2026).

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Install and launch from an external SSD
- Connect the SSD to the Ally and check that Windows recognizes it. Use Windows’ current storage and file-management prompts for any drive setup; ASUS’s cited FAQ does not specify an external-drive format or setup procedure.
- Open the launcher that owns the game and use its current install-location controls to select a folder on the SSD. Exact labels and paths vary by launcher and can change, so use the location selector in that launcher rather than assuming one Windows-wide setting.
- Complete the install through that launcher. Armoury Crate SE may add the installed game to its Game Library automatically; if it is missing, ASUS documents this route: Manage Library > Add Game/App to Library.
- Start the game from its launcher or its Armoury Crate SE library entry, with the SSD connected. The library entry is a shortcut/interface, not the installer of record: removing a tile does not uninstall the game. ASUS directs users to the game’s launcher or Windows’ Add or Remove Programs to uninstall.
External SSD or microSD?
| Consideration | External SSD | microSD |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Wired USB drive; must stay connected to access games installed on it. | Seated in the handheld’s card slot. |
| Documented game-storage guidance | The cited Valve and ASUS pages do not provide a complete official external-SSD game-library procedure. | ASUS explicitly says Ally users can install games to microSD. Valve documents formatting a Deck microSD card at Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. |
| Launcher handling | Use Steam’s library controls on Deck or the game’s Windows launcher on Ally; exact external-drive steps depend on the current software prompts. | Still select the card as the game’s install destination through the relevant launcher. |
| Charging while playing | Depends on the port, adapter, or hub arrangement; a power-delivery hub may help when the setup needs both connections. | Does not occupy the USB connection, so the external-drive connection is not part of the setup. |
| Performance comparison | No reliable comparative speed or battery figures are established by the cited sources; results depend on the drive, connection, game, and device. | |
For the least cable-dependent setup, onboard microSD is the simpler alternative. For a separate drive you can move between devices, a portable USB-C SSD is a practical fit, but plan for the cable and for choosing the install destination in each device’s software.
What happens if you unplug the SSD?
Games installed on the external SSD will not be available to launch while that drive is disconnected. Do not unplug it while a game, launcher, download, update, or file operation is using the drive; close the game and relevant launcher activity first, then use the operating system’s safe-removal controls if available. Reconnect the drive before trying to launch those games again. The cited manufacturer pages do not guarantee how every external library will reconnect after a reboot or drive-letter/path change, so check that the launcher still recognizes its install location.
