HelixSR is the “DLSS 3.7 mod” most Steam Deck guides mean. It is an unofficial, per-game super-resolution project that runs NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E network through an FSR 3.1-style path on supported AMD hardware. It does not add DLSS frame generation, does not turn every game into a DLSS title, and is not a product supported by Valve, NVIDIA or AMD. Installation and removal are safest when you let the project’s setup script select a route for each game, keep the game closed while files are changed, and use the supplied uninstaller instead of deleting DLLs by hand.
This guide follows the Linux/Proton procedure documented by the official HelixSR repository. The repository listed version 1.8.1 at the time its documentation was captured; releases can change, so check the latest release there before downloading.

What HelixSR does—and what it does not do
HelixSR describes itself as a drop-in FSR 3.1 upscaler that executes NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E neural network with Direct3D 12 compute shaders. The project says it does not need NVIDIA Tensor Cores, an NVIDIA driver, CUDA or ROCm, because the workload is exposed through the game’s supported graphics path and runs on compatible AMD hardware.
The project calls itself an independent, unofficial project and says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by NVIDIA, AMD or OptiScaler. Treat it as a community mod that changes files for individual games, not as an official SteamOS feature. Compatibility is therefore conditional: a title must expose a graphics/upscaling path that one of HelixSR’s routes can hook, and the project has not validated every Steam Deck model or every Proton game.

HelixSR supplies super resolution only. It does not provide DLSS Frame Generation. Selecting a DLSS-labelled option in a game after using the OptiScaler route does not add frame generation; it selects the game’s upscaler interface that HelixSR is serving.
Check compatibility before changing any files
Hardware and API requirements
- The project lists Direct3D 12 as a requirement.
- It lists AMD RDNA 1 or newer GPUs as supported and explicitly says Vega GPUs are unsupported.
- On Steam Deck, the setup runs in the Linux/Proton environment used by the game.
- The project’s development and testing basis is an AMD BC-250 running Linux with Mesa RADV. The README says other GPUs and Windows are not tested by the project, so a successful BC-250 result is not a promise for your particular Deck, Proton version or game.
Steam Deck models use AMD graphics, but that alone does not establish that a specific game will work. Check whether the setup script offers a route for the title instead of assuming that a game with FSR, DLSS, XeSS or another upscaler will accept the mod.
Game and mod conflicts
- Do not patch while the affected game is running. Exit the game and wait for Steam to finish any process still closing.
- Do not use the experimental direct DLSS-loader route with anti-cheat games.
- The README warns against combining that direct route with OptiScaler, ReShade or another mod that installs a
dxgi.dllnext to the game executable. - If the setup does not present a route for a title, choose the skip option rather than forcing files into the directory.
Keep the release folder
Extract HelixSR into a folder you can keep, such as a dedicated tools folder in your home directory. The setup and uninstaller are run from this extracted location, and the uninstaller needs the project’s backup information to restore replaced files. Moving or deleting the folder immediately after installation makes later removal harder.

How to install HelixSR on Steam Deck
- Download the current release. Open the HelixSR repository, open its latest release, download the Linux release archive and extract it into the permanent folder you prepared. Do not use a random mirror or a DLL copied from a forum post.
- Close every affected game. The patch changes files in the game’s installation directory. A running process can keep a DLL locked or load a mixture of old and new files.
- Open a terminal in the extracted folder. In the Steam Deck desktop environment, change to that directory and run:
./helixsr-setup.sh
The README also documents double-clicking the script and choosing Run in terminal. If the shell reports a permission problem, launch the script using the terminal command from the extracted folder rather than downloading a replacement script. - Approve the first-run downloads. On its first run, setup asks whether it may download NVIDIA’s DLSS DLL and then builds the network locally. Read the prompt before accepting; the project’s documented workflow is to obtain the required file through this setup and create the HelixSR build on the machine.
- Answer the per-game prompt. The setup scans for games and offers only routes it considers applicable to each title. In the documented choices,
fmeans the direct FSR route,omeans the OptiScaler route andnmeans skip. The default selected by pressing Enter can differ by game, so read the game name and the full prompt instead of pressing Enter automatically. - Read the final summary. Setup reports what it changed and which in-game upscaler to select. Record that instruction for each title; different games may receive different routes.
- Launch the game and choose the indicated upscaler. For the FSR route, select AMD FSR in the game’s graphics menu. For the OptiScaler route, select DLSS in the game. Use the quality mode you normally want, then check that the image and performance behave normally before adding another graphics mod.
The scripts are designed for a per-game decision, not a one-click global replacement. If the title is not listed, if only skip is offered, or if the final summary says the route is unavailable, leave that game unmodified.
Choose the route the setup offers
The two normal choices expose HelixSR through different game interfaces. The experimental direct loader is separate and should not be treated as a third general-purpose option.

Why the menu can differ from game to game
A title may expose FSR 3.1 but not a usable DLSS hook, in which case setup can show only f. Another title may expose an interface that OptiScaler can redirect, making o available. The installer’s list is therefore a compatibility decision made for that game; it is not a ranking in which one letter is always superior.

Before choosing, consider five things: the upscaler the game natively exposes, the letter setup offers, the in-game option you must select afterward, whether anti-cheat or another DLL injector is present, and whether the title and your hardware have actually been tested. If any answer is uncertain, skip the patch and consult the current README rather than improvising.
The experimental direct DLSS route needs extra caution
The project documents a direct DLSS-loader route separately from the ordinary FSR and OptiScaler choices. It is Linux/Proton-only, has been tested in only a few games, and carries an explicit warning not to use it with anti-cheat games. It also must not be combined with OptiScaler, ReShade or another modification that places dxgi.dll beside the game executable.
Use this route only if the current setup explicitly presents it for your title and you understand the conflicts. Do not add the loader manually because a guide for another game mentions it. If a game has anti-cheat, an existing dxgi.dll, or a mod stack you cannot inventory, choose a non-experimental route if setup offers one—or leave the game unmodified.

Confirm that the installation is working
Use the game’s own menu
Start with the upscaler named in setup’s final summary. A direct FSR installation should be tested with AMD FSR selected; an OptiScaler installation should be tested with DLSS selected. Selecting a different upscaler can bypass the replacement and make a successful install appear broken.
Change one variable at a time
Do not add ReShade, another upscaler wrapper or a second DLL injector during the first test. If the game fails to start, shows a blank image or ignores the setting, close it and return to the HelixSR scripts before changing anything else. A clean rollback is easier to diagnose than several overlapping loaders.

Remember what the published performance figures mean
The README’s timing figures are GPU time for the upscaling pass measured on an AMD BC-250 at 2000 MHz. They are not total game frame rates, not a Steam Deck benchmark and not a guarantee for any Deck model. Use them only as an indication of the pass’s cost under that stated test setup. The sources for this guide do not establish an independent Steam Deck benchmark.
How to uninstall the DLSS mod safely
- Exit every affected game. Close the game and confirm that it is no longer running before restoring files.
- Open the original HelixSR folder. Use the same extracted release directory from which setup was run.
- Run the project uninstaller:
./helixsr-uninstall.sh - Select the games to restore. The uninstaller presents the installed entries. Choose the title you want to return to its previous state and follow the prompts.
- Handle manually added games by path. If you added a game manually, pass that game’s directory to the uninstaller as documented by the project, rather than deleting DLLs from the folder yourself.
- Review the optional cleanup choices. The maintainer says the uninstaller can optionally delete the built HelixSR DLL and setup downloads after restoring the game. Keep them if you plan to test another title; remove them only when you no longer need them.
- Launch the game without HelixSR’s setting. After restoration, select the game’s normal upscaler or default graphics option. If Steam or the game reports a missing file, stop and rerun the project’s restoration process instead of copying a DLL from an unrelated installation.
The project says its uninstaller restores replaced files to their prior state. That backup-aware process is the intended recovery path. Do not guess which files to delete: removing a shared-looking DLL can leave a title unable to start and can also remove another mod’s file.
If something went wrong during setup
The README’s first recovery instruction is to rerun setup and select its remove option for the affected game. This lets the project use the files and backups it recorded. If the game was added manually, use the corresponding directory argument with the uninstaller. Keep the game closed throughout the recovery attempt.
Download and file-handling notes
The setup asks before downloading NVIDIA’s DLSS DLL. The project says its downloads are pinned to versions and checked with SHA-256, then used to build HelixSR locally. The resulting game DLLs contain NVIDIA’s network. The README instructs users to keep those files for their own PC and not upload or share them. Follow that project instruction; it is a distribution requirement stated by the maintainer, not a claim that this guide has independently audited the binaries.

What SteamOS recovery can and cannot do
Steam Support documents SteamOS reinstall recovery that can restore modified system files: SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting. That is general operating-system recovery information, not the normal way to remove HelixSR. HelixSR modifies per-game files, so use helixsr-uninstall.sh first. A SteamOS reinstall should be considered only for a broader operating-system problem, after understanding its impact on the Deck, not as routine mod cleanup.
Common mistakes and the safer response

Decision checklist for each game
- Is the game using Direct3D 12 under Proton?
- Is the Deck GPU in the project’s stated AMD RDNA support range, rather than an unsupported Vega GPU?
- Does setup explicitly offer
f,oor an experimental direct route for this title? - Do you know which upscaler the final summary tells you to select in the game?
- Is anti-cheat absent or otherwise compatible with the route you intend to use?
- Is there no conflicting
dxgi.dll-based mod beside the executable? - Have you kept the release folder so the uninstaller can restore the game?
If any answer is no, skipping the installation is safer than forcing a generic DLL swap. HelixSR’s value is its per-game integration; treating it as a universal Steam Deck patch is the main way to create avoidable failures.
