There is no universal mounting height or angle: follow the instructions for your specific model.
Plan the scene before choosing a mounting spot
Start with the event you need the camera to capture: someone approaching a door, entering a gate, walking along a path, or reaching a vehicle. Decide whether you mainly need broad awareness, dependable motion alerts, or a closer view that may help identify a person. Those goals can call for different framing.

Sketch the route a person or vehicle is likely to take, then find a position with an unobstructed view of that area. A wide field of view can cover more ground, but it does not guarantee that a distant person will appear large or detailed enough for identification. Google’s general Nest placement guidance recommends keeping subjects within 20 feet as an example for an adult of average height; that is not a universal limit or guarantee for other cameras. See Google’s Nest camera placement guidance.
Check whether branches, flags, roof edges, walls, or nearby objects will block the target or dominate the frame. Avoid aiming farther beyond your property than necessary, and check the privacy and data-protection rules that apply where you live.

Choose a provisional position and verify the connection
Look for a secure location suitable for an outdoor-rated camera, with a clear view of the target and a workable plan for power and cable routing. A porch or eave may provide shade and help shelter the lens, but the camera’s outdoor and mounting requirements still govern. A modest downward view can reduce the amount of sky and horizon in frame; use the model’s instructions for the actual height and angle.
Before drilling, temporarily hold or place the camera at the proposed spot and check its live stream in the manufacturer’s app. Test the connection where the camera will be installed, not just near the router: walls, especially thick or insulated ones, can weaken Wi-Fi. TP-Link’s placement guidance and Google’s Nest guidance both emphasize checking the intended location.

If the stream is unreliable, try a nearby position and test again. If the issue is weak Wi-Fi, moving the router or considering an extender may help; an extender is not a guaranteed fix for a slow internet connection or inadequate upload speed. SimpliSafe describes an in-app connection test and troubleshooting options for its cameras in its Outdoor Camera Series 2 installation guide.

Mounting recommendations vary by model and intended view, so do not average figures from different manufacturers into a universal rule. For example, Google recommends 7–10 feet (2–3 meters) above ground for Nest Cam IQ Outdoor in its installation instructions. SimpliSafe recommends 6.5 feet high and a 30-degree downward angle for its Outdoor Camera Series 2 in its model-specific guide. These are manufacturer recommendations for those products, not independent test results or standards for every camera.

- One Unified Security System, Powered by 1st-Gen aosuBase: 32GB of local storage comes ready to use, holding about 120 days of loop recording. No subscription required. Connect up to 4 cameras to one base with a stable wireless connection and centralized local storage. Recordings saved to aosuBase are event-based, triggered by detected activity.
- Multi-Cam Live View for All-at-Once Monitoring: Watch up to four live camera feeds simultaneously in the aosu app and monitor multiple areas on one screen without opening each camera individually. Live View is available through the aosu app only; the base does not support HDMI or TV output.
- 360° Coverage with Pan, Tilt, and Smart Auto Tracking: Pan and tilt to see all around your property. When activity is detected, the camera automatically follows people and other movement to keep the action in view while recording, giving you a more complete view of what happens around your home.
- 2K (3MP) Clarity with Full-Color Night Vision: Capture clear details in 2K and zoom in up to 6x for a closer look. Built-in spotlights enable full-color night vision, helping you see important color details like clothing and vehicles after dark. For more discreet monitoring, switch to infrared mode for black-and-white night vision without visible lighting.
- Quick Setup with a Pre-Paired System: Connect aosuBase to your router's LAN port with the included Ethernet cable. Cameras connect wirelessly to aosuBase instead of your home Wi-Fi. The system comes pre-paired, so simply power on the cameras and complete setup in the app without pairing each camera one by one. The cameras are designed to work with the included aosuBase, and add-on cameras connect through the base as well.
Use the specified bracket orientation and check the actual image after positioning. If the camera has a motion sensor, the path of movement matters as well as the lens framing. TP-Link says its battery cameras may detect movement across the field of view better than movement directly toward the camera; SimpliSafe likewise says side-to-side movement is most sensitive for the cited outdoor camera. TP-Link’s guidance puts it this way: “Mount your camera to the side so that movement goes across the lens’s field of view to better trigger camera detection.” Treat this as advice for the products covered by those instructions, not every detection system.
Check lighting and reflections in both day and night views
Review live or recorded footage in daylight and after dark before settling the position. Direct sun, backlighting, porch or street lights, headlights, and floodlights shining into the lens can create glare or obscure detail. Adjust the position or aim and check the image again. Google, TP-Link, and Swann all discuss placement factors that can affect the view.

At night, infrared light can reflect from nearby walls, eaves, glass, or other close surfaces and wash out the image. Avoid putting the camera behind glass when night vision is needed, and check for objects close to the lens that may bounce infrared light back. A position that looks clear in daylight may need a different aim or location after dark.

Match the camera’s detection method to the scene
Detection behavior depends on the camera and its sensor. Swann distinguishes PIR sensing from video-based motion detection and AI detection; coverage and range depend on the particular model. Check the camera’s specifications and app settings, then consider how a person will move through the scene. A path that crosses the frame may suit some motion sensors better than one that leads straight toward the lens.

Do not assume a camera’s advertised field of view is also its effective motion-detection range. Frame the target area within both the lens view and the sensor’s stated coverage, then test alerts with the camera in its proposed position.
Secure the mount and confirm the final view
Once the placement works, follow the camera’s instructions for the mounting surface, fasteners, weather exposure, cable routing, and power. Hardware and tools depend on the device and wall. For example, SimpliSafe lists a screwdriver for wood or vinyl and a 7/64-inch drill bit for brick, stucco, or tile for its cited Outdoor Camera Series 2; use that only for the specified model and surfaces, not as a general drilling specification.
- Set the camera at the planned spot and confirm the live view and connection in its app.
- Check the frame for obstructions, useful subject size, and any unnecessary view beyond the property.
- Review footage in daylight and after dark; adjust for glare, backlighting, or infrared reflections.
- Test the expected movement path and motion alerts, then refine the angle if needed.
- Install the camera with its specified mount, fasteners, and power or cable arrangement, and verify the view again after tightening it.
For difficult surfaces or cable routes, a qualified local installer can help with the physical work. The final image should be checked after the camera is firmly mounted, since tightening or changing the bracket can shift the framing.
