To play Halo 3 through Project Reclaimer, first install Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) on Steam and make sure Halo 3 is installed. Then download the Project Reclaimer client from its official GitHub releases, verify its checksum, and launch the client. Project Reclaimer does not include Halo 3 or MCC game files.
What you need before installing Project Reclaimer
- A Steam copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
- Halo 3 installed through MCC. Campaign play also requires the relevant Halo 3 campaign content.
- The Project Reclaimer client, downloaded from the official releases page.
The client uses files in your own MCC installation; it is not a standalone copy of Halo 3. The project’s download repository says it does not bundle game files.

How to install and launch the client
- Install MCC through Steam. Confirm that Halo 3 is installed before proceeding. If you intend to play the campaign, confirm its campaign content is installed as well.
- Get the current client. Open the official releases page and download the versioned executable from the latest release. At the time of this article’s research, the latest listed release was v0.9.0, dated October 3, 2026; check the page for newer builds.
- Verify the download before running it. On the same release, locate
SHA256SUMS.txtand compare the executable’s hash with the listed value. The repository documents this Windows PowerShell command:Get-FileHash project-reclaimer.exe -Algorithm SHA256. Run it in the folder containing the downloaded executable, then confirm that the output matches the corresponding entry in the checksum file. - Launch the client executable. The current release instructions say the client searches Steam libraries for Halo 3 and starts the game without opening a console window. Its log is located at
DocumentsMy GamesProject ReclaimerLogsclient.log.
What to play after the client opens
Join a multiplayer server
Use Project Reclaimer’s community server browser to find a session. The project describes support for custom games and playlists, and says the client can download mods when joining a server. This is separate from launching MCC’s usual menus or matchmaking.

Host a custom game or use Forge
You can also host a custom game or use Forge. Project Reclaimer’s v0.9.0 notes say custom games can hold up to 64 players. That limit applies to custom games, not campaign co-op.

Play the campaign
Campaign play, including solo and co-op options, is documented in the project’s release history. It depends on the corresponding Halo 3 campaign content being installed in MCC. The v0.9.0 notes say campaign co-op remains capped at 16 players.
Optional controller setting
A controller is optional, not an installation requirement. If you use one, the v0.9.0 release documents Settings → Controller → Aim control, where you can choose Modern or Classic aiming.

If Halo 3 or campaign content is not detected
First check that Halo 3—and, for campaign play, the campaign content—is installed through MCC in Steam. If the client reports missing campaign files, earlier release notes suggested verifying MCC’s files in Steam under Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam’s labels or the project’s troubleshooting guidance may change, so treat that as a troubleshooting path rather than a guaranteed current menu flow.
If the client still does not start or locate the game, check the client log at DocumentsMy GamesProject ReclaimerLogsclient.log and consult the current release instructions.
