For a normal internet-connected ownCloud server, open Market, choose an app, and click Install. ownCloud downloads, installs, and enables a compatible release. For a server without Marketplace access, transfer a compatible archive into an app directory or install it with occ market:install -l. When an app will not install or enable, stop retrying blindly: run occ app:list as the HTTP user, read the ownCloud, PHP, and web-server logs, then check filesystem ownership, PHP compatibility, app-code checks, and (for Docker) trusted domains and persistent volumes.

Choose the installation method that fits your server
ownCloud offers three practical installation paths. The web interface is easiest when the server can reach the public ownCloud Marketplace. The occ command-line interface is more repeatable and exposes clearer error output. Manual archive installation is the controlled option for DMZ, air-gapped, or otherwise restricted servers.

Install an app from the ownCloud web interface
Use this route only when the ownCloud host can make the required Marketplace connection.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Market from the top-level navigation.
- Search for the app by name, then open its details page.
- Review the app’s stated compatibility and permissions for your ownCloud release.
- Click Install. ownCloud downloads the package from the Marketplace, places it in the configured app location, and enables it.
- Open Settings → Admin → Apps and confirm the app appears under the enabled apps. That page also separates disabled and recommended apps.
If the button is unavailable, the app is not shown, or installation ends with an error, record the exact message and the app ID before changing settings. Continue with the command-line and log workflow below; repeating the web action can obscure the original failure.

Install and manage apps with occ
occ is ownCloud’s administrative CLI. It gives you deterministic output and is usually the fastest way to distinguish an app that is missing from one that is present but disabled.
Run commands as the HTTP user
Run commands from the ownCloud installation directory and use the account that runs the web server. On many Debian or Ubuntu installations this account is www-data, but you must substitute the actual account used by your deployment. ownCloud specifically requires the HTTP user so newly created files retain usable ownership.

sudo -u www-data ./occ app:list --disabledFor a package installation, ./occ is the native form. A different user or directory can produce misleading permission errors or leave an app owned by root, which later prevents the web process from updating it.
Install from the Marketplace

An offline host cannot use the Market app directly. On a connected workstation, obtain an archive release that supports your ownCloud server and PHP version. Transfer it through your approved controlled channel, verify that the transfer is complete, and keep the original filename and version for your change record.

Use the local-archive command
sudo -u www-data ./occ market:install -l /mnt/data/<app-archive>.tar.gzUse only archive formats documented by ownCloud. The path must be readable by the HTTP user. After the command finishes, verify state:

The alternative is to extract the compatible archive into ownCloud’s configured default app directory or a custom directory, then enable the app from Settings → Admin → Apps or with occ app:enable. The extracted directory name must match the app ID reported by ownCloud. A package nested one level too deep, such as apps/example/example/ instead of apps/example/, will not be detected correctly.
Use a separate custom app location
For locally maintained or third-party apps, a separate directory keeps core applications distinct from custom code. Configure the location with apps_paths in config/config.php. Give the directory the same careful ownership and backup treatment as the core app directory. Keeping custom apps separate makes upgrades and rollback easier to reason about, but it does not remove the need to verify compatibility before enabling them.

Use the following order. It preserves evidence, avoids compounding permission problems, and works for both web and CLI failures.
1. Capture the failure context
- Copy the complete error text, including the app ID.
- Record the ownCloud server version, app version, and PHP version.
- Note whether the operation was performed in the web UI, native CLI, or a Docker container.
- Record whether the app was being installed, enabled, upgraded, or loaded after an upgrade.
These details determine which compatibility and execution-identity checks matter.
2. Inspect enabled and disabled state
sudo -u www-data ./occ app:list --disabledCheck whether the app is already installed but disabled. Confirm that the directory name exactly matches the app ID. If the code exists on disk under a different name, ownCloud may treat it as absent or refuse to enable it.
3. Read logs before changing configuration
ownCloud’s first troubleshooting sources are the ownCloud log, the PHP log, and the web-server log. Look at entries generated at the time of the failed request and preserve the surrounding lines. The ownCloud log often identifies the app class or command that failed; PHP records syntax, extension, and fatal errors; the web server can reveal permission, routing, or request-size problems.

Do not rely on the browser message alone. A generic “could not enable” notice can correspond to a PHP fatal error, a missing extension, an unreadable directory, or an app-code policy rejection.
4. Temporarily increase logging detail
Set ownCloud logging to All or Everything, reproduce the failure once, and then return to the normal level. Excessive logging can expose sensitive values and consume disk space, so it should not remain enabled indefinitely. If the failure occurs only in the browser, inspect the browser developer console as well; JavaScript errors can prevent the request from completing even when the server-side log is quiet. Temporary debug mode can help isolate that class of failure.
5. Verify ownership and write access
The HTTP user needs ownership of the directories involved in the operation: config/, data/, apps/, and, when configured, apps-external/. An app copied as root may be readable but not writable, so installation succeeds while an update or enable step fails.
Run occ as the HTTP user rather than fixing symptoms with broad write permissions. Avoid making the whole installation world-writable. Correct ownership at the directory and file level, then retry the same command and compare the new output with the original log entry.
6. Check PHP and ownCloud compatibility
Manually installed code must match the PHP environment supported by your ownCloud release. The official app guidance specifically warns that incompatible code can make the instance unstable, including when the code assumes a different PHP generation. Check the app’s supported ownCloud releases and PHP requirements before copying it to production.
Also inspect appcodechecker. It can reject third-party apps that use private APIs, even when the app appears to work on another server. A rejection is a compatibility and supportability signal, not a reason to bypass the check blindly.
7. Confirm Marketplace reachability
If the failure occurs only with market:install, test the server’s ability to reach the Marketplace through its proxy, firewall, and DNS path. A DMZ or offline server is expected to fail this step; use a downloaded archive and an approved transfer process instead. Do not open broader outbound access merely to install one package without reviewing the deployment’s security policy.

8. Check the app directory and archive layout
For manual installations, verify that the archive extracted into a directory listed in apps_paths, that the app’s top-level directory is the app ID, and that the HTTP user can read every file and write where the app requires it. A valid archive in an unconfigured path is invisible to ownCloud; a malformed nested path can produce the same symptom.
9. Re-test with one controlled action
After each correction, run one command or one web action, then read the resulting log entry. Changing permissions, PHP settings, and app files simultaneously makes it impossible to know which change fixed the problem and can conceal a second defect.
Docker-specific checks
Container deployments add two failure surfaces: the container boundary and the persistence layer. Use the container’s own occ command rather than a host binary.
Inspect logs and app state
docker compose logs owncloud -f

docker compose exec owncloud occ configreport:generate > config_report.txtApache and PHP output in the official container is routed to container standard output and standard error, so docker compose logs owncloud -f is the appropriate first view. Follow the stream while reproducing the failure, then stop it when you have the relevant entries.
Verify persistent storage
Confirm that the app directory is on the intended Docker volume or bind mount. Installing into a disposable container layer can make an app appear to work until the container is recreated. Check the mount definition, the path visible inside the container, and the ownership seen by the container’s web process.
Check hostnames and trusted domains
Ensure OWNCLOUD_DOMAIN and OWNCLOUD_TRUSTED_DOMAINS include the hostname or IP that users actually reach. A mismatch can present as a refused request, redirect loop, or failed browser action even though the app files are correct. Make the hostname change in the deployment configuration, recreate or restart the service as required by that deployment, and then repeat the app operation.
Build a useful escalation bundle
When local fixes do not resolve the issue, provide evidence that another administrator can reproduce and interpret.
- Enable

Remove passwords, tokens, private URLs, usernames, personal file names, and other personal data before sharing the bundle. A redacted but time-correlated report is more useful than an unfiltered log dump.

Maintenance practices that prevent repeat failures
- Keep a record of the ownCloud release, PHP version, app version, app ID, and installation method.
- Prefer Marketplace releases that explicitly support your server and PHP combination.
- Keep custom applications in a separate configured directory when practical, while backing up that directory with the rest of the instance.
- Use the HTTP user for every routine
occoperation. - Before upgrading ownCloud, list enabled apps and confirm that custom apps have a compatible release.
- For offline systems, stage archives through a controlled process and retain the version and integrity information needed to roll back.
- Keep normal logging at its operational level; raise it only for a bounded reproduction and then restore it.
- For Docker, treat app directories, configuration, and logs as deployment data that must survive container replacement and be included in the backup plan.
Which installation path should you use?
Choose the web Market app when convenience matters and the server has reliable Marketplace access. Choose occ when you need repeatability, scripting, or precise diagnostics. Choose a local archive when the server is offline, isolated, or subject to a controlled software-import process. In all three cases, the decisive checks are the same: supported ownCloud and PHP versions, a directory layout ownCloud can discover, correct HTTP-user ownership, and logs that show what happened at the time of failure.
