The NeverEnding Story Movies in Order: A Guide to the Series

Watch The NeverEnding Story films in release order: The NeverEnding Story (1984), The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (commonly labeled 1990; released in the United States in 1991), then The NeverEnding Story III (commonly labeled 1994; released in the United States in 1996). That sequence follows the screen continuity as clearly as possible, while recognizing that the trilogy is not a complete, faithful adaptation of Michael Ende’s novel.

The NeverEnding Story movies in order at a glance

There are three released films in the series covered by this guide. The practical viewing order is the same as the films’ release sequence:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Viewing order Film Common franchise year U.S. release information Director
1 The NeverEnding Story 1984 July 20, 1984 Wolfgang Petersen
2 The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter 1990 February 8, 1991 George T. Miller
3 The NeverEnding Story III 1994 April 2, 1996 Peter MacDonald

The two different year conventions for the sequels are the reason a search can produce “1990” and “1991” for the second film, or “1994” and “1996” for the third. The earlier years are the common franchise labels used in series references; the later years are the U.S. theatrical release dates listed for those films. They are not additional movies.

Why release order is the best first viewing order

The films were made as a sequence, and their relationship to Ende’s 1979 novel changes from one entry to the next. The 1984 film adapts roughly the first half of the book. The second film takes the latter half as a loose starting point rather than presenting a literal continuation of every book event. The third film has an original plot rather than adapting another section of the novel.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Watching in release order lets you see that progression without treating the trilogy as a single, continuous screen version of the book. It also prevents a common misunderstanding: the films do not divide the entire novel into three faithful installments. The first two draw on Ende’s material in different degrees, while the third moves beyond it.

How many NeverEnding Story movies are there?

There are three released feature films in this screen series: the 1984 original, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, and The NeverEnding Story III. The 1990/1991 and 1994/1996 pairs are alternate dating conventions for the same sequels, not extra entries. A home-video documentary or a television listing should not be counted as a fourth film.

A reported 2024 announcement from Michael Ende Productions and See-Saw Films concerns plans for a new series of films based on the book. It does not add a released movie to the trilogy, and no release date or confirmed number of films is established by that announcement.

1. The NeverEnding Story (1984)

What the first film is

Wolfgang Petersen directed and co-wrote the 1984 film with Herman Weigel. Its framing device follows Bastian, who discovers a mysterious book and becomes involved in the world of Fantasia as he reads. That story-within-a-story structure is central to the film’s identity: the act of reading is not separate from the adventure but part of how Bastian enters it.

BAFTA’s 2015 screening handout records the film as a 1984 release and lists a 102-minute screening runtime. A film-series reference lists 94 minutes, so the exact duration depends on the edition or listing being consulted. Neither figure should automatically be treated as a mistake; cuts, restoration choices, and catalog conventions can produce different runtimes.

Why it comes first

This is the entry that establishes the film version of Fantasia and the series’ basic idea of a reader becoming part of the story. It is also the film most directly connected to the first half of Ende’s novel, making it the necessary starting point even if you intend to read the book afterward.

A concise critical description

“The idea of a story within a story is one of the nice touches in The NeverEnding Story.”

— Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun-Times, January 1, 1984, as reproduced in BAFTA’s screening handout

2. The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990/1991)

Which year should you use?

The sequel is commonly labeled 1990 in franchise references, while the U.S. release date is February 8, 1991. Apple TV’s current U.S. listing identifies it as a sequel to the 1984 film, gives the year as 1991, and lists a runtime of 1 hour 29 minutes. The series reference lists 90 minutes. For a U.S.-specific article, catalog, or viewing list, 1991 is the precise theatrical-release year; for a simple franchise list, “1990” is the common label.

How it relates to the novel

The Next Chapter uses the latter half of Ende’s novel as a rough basis. “Rough” matters here: it is not a scene-by-scene adaptation and should not be used as a substitute for the second half of the book. The film is best understood as a sequel that borrows the novel’s later material while reshaping it for its own screen story.

Where it belongs in a marathon

Watch it immediately after the 1984 film. Its title and premise assume that viewers know the first film’s version of the story, and release order preserves the intended handoff from the original adaptation to the looser follow-up.

3. The NeverEnding Story III (1994/1996)

Which year should you use?

The third film is commonly labeled 1994 in series listings, but its U.S. release date is April 2, 1996. The difference follows the same pattern as the second film: one year reflects the franchise’s standard labeling, while the other identifies the U.S. release date. If you are searching a U.S. storefront, the 1996 date may be the one displayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it is different from the first two

Peter MacDonald directed The NeverEnding Story III. Unlike the first film and the second film’s loose use of the novel’s latter half, the third movie has an original plot. It is therefore a continuation of the film series rather than another adaptation of a defined section of Ende’s book.

What to expect from the order

Place it last. Starting here would remove the setup supplied by the 1984 film and would obscure the trilogy’s progression from direct adaptation, to loose adaptation, to original story.

Release-year labels versus U.S. release dates

Use the following distinction when building a watchlist or checking a database:

Film Common series label U.S. date listed for release How to write it unambiguously
The NeverEnding Story 1984 July 20, 1984 1984
The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter 1990 February 8, 1991 1990 (U.S. release: 1991)
The NeverEnding Story III 1994 April 2, 1996 1994 (U.S. release: 1996)

Do not combine a franchise year from one convention with a release date from another and present them as though they describe separate entries. A list headed “films in order” can use 1984, 1990, and 1994 if it adds the U.S. qualification. A U.S.-theatrical timeline should use the specific dates in the third column.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are there alternate viewing orders?

There is no competing order that clarifies the story better than release order. A novel-first route can be meaningful for readers who want to compare Ende’s ideas with the films, but it is a different experience rather than an alternative film sequence. Within the movies, start with the 1984 adaptation, continue to The Next Chapter, and finish with the original-story third film.

Watching the third movie first is especially unhelpful because it assumes the audience recognizes the screen version of Fantasia and Bastian’s role. Watching the second before the first also removes the introduction that explains why the sequel’s references matter. If you are rewatching only a favorite entry, that is a personal choice, but it is not the clearest first-time order.

Runtimes and different cuts

The original film

The 1984 film is listed at 94 minutes by the series reference and 102 minutes in BAFTA’s screening handout. A reported anniversary release includes two cuts, which helps explain why a reader may encounter more than one duration. Check the edition’s own specification rather than assuming that every listing represents the same version.

The sequel

The second film appears as 90 minutes in the series reference and as 1 hour 29 minutes in Apple TV’s U.S. listing. That is a one-minute difference between two catalog entries and may reflect rounding or listing practice. Use the runtime attached to the specific edition or storefront you plan to watch.

How the films adapt Michael Ende’s book

Film one: approximately the first half

The first movie translates the opening portion of the 1979 novel into a self-contained film about Bastian’s discovery of the book and his involvement with Fantasia. Its story-within-a-story construction is drawn from the novel’s central premise, but a film adaptation necessarily selects and reshapes material.

Film two: the latter half as a loose basis

The sequel is not “the second half of the book” in a literal, chapter-by-chapter sense. It draws on that portion of the novel, then changes the material for a separate production. If you want Ende’s complete narrative, read the novel; the sequel is an interpretation, not a replacement.

Film three: an original continuation

The third movie does not adapt a remaining section of the novel. Its plot was created as an original continuation of the screen series, so there is no corresponding third section of Ende’s book to read alongside it.

Comparing the trilogy’s adaptation approach

Film Relationship to the novel What that means for viewers
The NeverEnding Story Roughly the first half of the 1979 novel The strongest direct connection to Ende’s opening narrative and its reader-entering-the-story premise.
The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter The latter half used as a loose basis Expect recognizable ideas reshaped into a separate sequel, not a literal continuation of every book chapter.
The NeverEnding Story III Original plot There is no specific remaining section of the novel that the film adapts.

This distinction answers a frequent question: the trilogy is not a three-part screen translation in which each movie covers one-third of Ende’s book. The first film and the sequel borrow from different portions, and the final film continues the movie universe on its own terms.

Choosing an edition of the first film

Why collectors may see different versions

The available home-video history includes more than one cut. A 4K release of the German international cut was reported in Germany in July 2021. A reported Australian 40th-anniversary five-disc deluxe edition, released in December 2024, includes the original U.S. theatrical version restored from the original negative, the extended German version, and the feature-length documentary Life After Neverending Story.

Those details describe the contents of the specific reported edition; they do not establish current stock, shipping, retailer availability, or compatibility with every player. Before buying, verify the country or region code, included cuts, disc format, subtitles, audio options, and the seller’s current listing. The deluxe set concerns the original film and should not be assumed to contain all three movies.

Which cut should a first-time viewer choose?

  • Choose the original U.S. theatrical version if you want the cut most closely associated with the film’s U.S. release.
  • Choose the extended German version if you specifically want the longer international presentation and your equipment supports that edition.
  • Choose a release only after checking its stated runtime, because a storefront may use a rounded or alternate figure.

Edition checklist for collectors

Compare the exact title, territory, disc count, format and cut before ordering. “4K,” “anniversary,” and “deluxe” labels do not by themselves tell you which version is included. Confirm whether the listing names the original U.S. theatrical cut, the extended German cut, or both; check that the documentary is actually included; and make sure your player accepts the release’s region and video format. The reported five-disc Australian set is a first-film collection, not a box set of the trilogy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finding the films in catalogs and storefronts

Search by title as well as by year. For the sequel, try both The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter and the year pair 1990/1991. For the third, use The NeverEnding Story III with 1994/1996. A catalog may display a franchise year, a local theatrical date, or a home-video date, so the title is the most reliable starting point.

Streaming availability for all three films was not established in the listings used here, and it can change by country. Check your local service or digital storefront at the time you plan to watch rather than assuming that a platform carrying one entry carries the others. If a listing shows an unfamiliar runtime, compare it with the edition details instead of concluding that it is a different movie.

A practical viewing plan

  1. Start with the 1984 film. Confirm whether your copy is listed at 94 or 102 minutes and note which cut it contains.
  2. Watch The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter next. Search under both 1990 and 1991 if a catalog does not return the title immediately.
  3. Finish with The NeverEnding Story III. Search under both 1994 and 1996 for the same reason.
  4. Keep the book distinction in mind. Treat the first film as an adaptation of roughly the novel’s first half, the second as a loose use of the latter half, and the third as an original screen story.
  5. Check each listing’s territory and edition. Release year, runtime, cut, and availability can vary by country and format.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting the alternate years as extra films: 1990 and 1991 refer to the same sequel, as do 1994 and 1996 for the third film.
  • Calling the sequel a faithful second-half adaptation: it uses the latter half of the novel only as a rough basis.
  • Expecting the third movie to adapt the book: its plot is original to the film series.
  • Treating every runtime as identical: the first film is listed at both 94 and 102 minutes, and the sequel at both 90 minutes and 1 hour 29 minutes.
  • Assuming a deluxe first-film set contains the trilogy: the reported Australian five-disc edition is centered on the original movie and its documentary extras.
  • Assuming a platform has all three films: catalog availability was not established for every territory, so verify each title separately.

Is a new adaptation coming?

Michael Ende Productions, in association with See-Saw Films, reportedly announced plans in 2024 for a series of films based on the book. That announcement does not establish that production is underway, how many films will be made, or when any new film will be released. Until a confirmed date and current production status are published, the three released movies remain the complete screen series covered here.

Bottom line on the order

For a first viewing, use 1984 → 1990/1991 → 1994/1996: The NeverEnding Story, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, and The NeverEnding Story III. Add the U.S. release dates when precision matters, and check the edition because runtimes and cuts are not identical across listings.
