Install an all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooler using the mounting hardware and cable diagram for your exact cooler and motherboard. The pump does not always connect to AIO_PUMP: some models use that header for pump power, while others use a pump lead only for speed monitoring and route fan power through a splitter or controller. Before you begin, check socket compatibility, case clearance, radiator orientation, and every cable’s intended connection.
Before installation: check compatibility and prepare
- Read the cooler’s manual and the motherboard manual. Confirm the cooler supports your CPU socket and identify the correct backplate, bracket, standoffs, and screws.
- Check that the case supports the radiator’s size and thickness, including the fans. Make sure the tubing can reach without sharp bends or pressure on its fittings.
- Disconnect the PC from power before working inside it. Keep hardware for different sockets separate.
- Check whether the cold plate has factory-applied thermal paste. Follow the cooler instructions: do not add paste over a factory layer. For a cooler being reinstalled, clean off the old paste and apply fresh paste as directed.
Some motherboards support a model-specific Q-Connector, while others do not. For example, ASUS says its 2026 Q-Connector guide applies only to selected motherboards; on unsupported boards, use the cooler’s pre-installed cables.

Install the pump block
- Fit the correct backplate and retention bracket in the orientation shown in the cooler manual.
- Just before placing the pump, remove the protective film from the copper cold plate.
- Set the pump squarely over the CPU and align its fasteners with the standoffs. Start all screws before tightening any of them.
- Tighten gradually in an X or diagonal pattern so pressure is distributed evenly. NZXT’s Kraken Core guide, for example, directs users to start all four retention screws loosely and then tighten in an X pattern. Do not add washers or spacers unless the cooler manual calls for them.
Choose a radiator position and mount the fans
As a general orientation principle, place the radiator so its highest point is above the pump. That gives air in the loop a place to collect away from the pump. Corsair describes a top-mounted radiator and a front-mounted radiator with tubes at the bottom as common arrangements. If front tubes-up is the only practical option, keep the pump below the radiator’s highest point. Corsair’s guidance states: “The radiator is in a higher position in the loop than the pump.” Corsair radiator-mounting guidance (updated February 28, 2024).

Secure the radiator and fans with the screws supplied for that installation. Check that the tubes are not sharply bent or pulled tight and that the fittings are not bearing strain. Use the airflow arrow marked on the fan frame to orient fans for the intended airflow through the case; the case layout and cooler instructions determine the correct direction.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
Connect the pump and radiator fans
There is no universal rule that every pump belongs on AIO_PUMP. A lead may supply pump power, report pump speed only, or be part of a system that routes pump and fan control through a supplied controller. Follow the wiring diagram for the exact cooler, then check the motherboard manual for the header’s function and default behavior.
| Cooler example | Pump connection | Radiator-fan connection | What the example shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corsair Nautilus 360 RS | 4-pin pump PWM lead to AIO_PUMP | Fan extension to CPU_FAN; Corsair lists CPU_OPT or SYS_FAN as alternatives if AIO_PUMP is unavailable | Follow the model-specific diagram; the fan connection is separate from the pump connection. |
| Corsair H60x/H100x RGB Elite | Pump tach lead to CPU_FAN | Fan power through the supplied splitter | A pump lead can report speed without being the pump’s power connection. |
| NZXT Kraken Core and other Kraken examples | Depending on the model, a pump-power lead may use AIO_PUMP or an equivalent header; some 3-pin leads report pump RPM only | Use the wiring path specified for the model | Do not infer a lead’s purpose from connector shape alone. |
Motherboards may label related headers CPU_OPT, CPU_FAN2, or AIO_PUMP, but their capabilities and default speed settings vary. NZXT notes that CPU_FAN can provide failure detection, while some AIO_PUMP or CPU_OPT headers may default to full speed. Set a header’s mode in UEFI/BIOS only as the cooler maker and motherboard manual specify.

- Simple, High-Performance All-in-One CPU Cooling: Renowned CORSAIR engineering delivers strong, low-noise cooling that helps your CPU reach its full potential
- Efficient, Low-Noise Pump: Keeps your coolant circulating at a high flow rate while generating a whisper-quiet 20 dBA
- Convex Cold Plate with Pre-Applied Thermal Paste: The slightly convex shape ensures maximum contact with your CPU’s integrated heat spreader, with thermal paste applied in an optimised pattern to speed up installation
- RS120 ARGB Fans: RS ARGB fans create strong airflow and high static pressure, with easy ARGB control via a compatible motherboard. CORSAIR AirGuide technology and Magnetic Dome bearings ensure great cooling performance and low noise
- Easy Daisy-Chained Connections: Reduce the wiring in your system by daisy-chaining your RS ARGB fans and connecting them to just one 4-pin PWM fan header and one +5V ARGB header
Connect radiator fans to the control path specified for your cooler, often CPU_FAN or an included splitter or controller. If the board expects a CPU_FAN signal and that header is unused because monitoring is handled elsewhere, use the motherboard manual to determine the correct fan-monitoring setting rather than ignoring a warning.
Connect lighting, USB, power, and controller leads
Identify each cable by its label and the cooler’s diagram. Depending on the model, an AIO may need SATA power, an internal USB connection, a vendor controller, or proprietary wiring; other models connect more directly to motherboard headers.

Match lighting voltage and connector type exactly. For the cited Kraken Core, the cap lighting lead is 5 V ARGB. NZXT warns: “Do not attempt to connect the 5V ARGB header on the Kraken Core or its included fan to 12V RGB or UART connectors!” A 5 V ARGB plug must not be connected to a 12 V RGB header. Never force a connector; check the cooler and motherboard manuals if the plug or header is unclear.
Check the installation before normal use
- Confirm the pump block is seated securely and the radiator and fans are firmly mounted.
- Check that every required pump, fan, lighting, USB, SATA, and controller cable is connected according to the model’s diagram.
- Power on and verify that the radiator fans spin and that the motherboard or cooler software reports the expected pump and fan readings.
- If a CPU-fan warning appears, confirm whether CPU_FAN monitoring is required or whether the cooler routes its tach signal elsewhere. Use the motherboard manual to choose the appropriate monitoring setting.
- If pump or fan noise is unexpected, check the header assignment and control mode against the cooler’s instructions; some boards run AIO_PUMP or CPU_OPT at full speed by default.
Why the exact manuals matter
Cooler wiring, header behavior, socket hardware, and lighting connectors differ by model and motherboard. The examples above illustrate those differences; they are not interchangeable wiring instructions. Use the cooler manual for the cable path and mounting method, and the motherboard manual for header capability and monitoring behavior. The cited guidance covers particular NZXT, Corsair, and ASUS products, not every AIO design.
