Install EssentialsX by placing the core EssentialsX.jar in your server’s plugins/ directory, starting the server once to generate plugins/Essentials/, and then configuring the generated YAML files. Use a version that matches your Minecraft server, run Java 8 or newer, and install optional modules only when you need them. Paper is the recommended platform, particularly for Minecraft 1.13 and newer.

- Private messages, teleportation, and teleport requests.
- Nicknames and moderation actions such as kicks, temporary bans, mutes, and jails.
- Economy functions, including sign shops and command costs.
- Integration with Vault for permissions, groups, prefixes, suffixes, and economy-related services supported by other plugins.
Additional EssentialsX modules can add chat formatting, spawn features, world protection, and GeoIP lookup. The core EssentialsX.jar is the only jar required for the basic plugin; every other module is optional and should be installed for a specific feature rather than copied indiscriminately.
Check compatibility before downloading
EssentialsX is built for Bukkit-compatible server software, but compatibility depends on the exact Minecraft and server version. Confirm these requirements before changing any files.

| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Server software | Paper, Spigot, or CraftBukkit | These are the platforms listed as supported by the upstream project. Paper is recommended, especially for Minecraft 1.13 and later, because the project cites performance improvements over Spigot. |
| Minecraft version | The exact game version used by your server | Supported versions change between EssentialsX releases. A jar that worked on one game version can fail or behave unpredictably on another. |
| Java | Java 8 or newer, with the version appropriate for your server software | The upstream README states that EssentialsX currently requires Java 8 or higher. Your server itself may impose a newer Java requirement. |
| File access | Permission to stop the server and write to its plugins/ directory |
Installation and upgrades require copying jars, restarting, and reading the console. Managed hosting must expose a file manager or SFTP-equivalent access. |
| Permissions plan | A permissions plugin and role structure | EssentialsX recommends LuckPerms for groups and permissions. Planning roles first prevents accidental access to administrative commands. |
Do not use an unsupported server implementation simply because it accepts Bukkit plugins. The EssentialsX downloads information specifically warns users not to use Mohist, and unsupported implementations may leave you without tested support when a command or module fails.
Choose a release and optional modules
Stable release or development build
Use a stable EssentialsX release for a production server unless you have a specific reason to test a development build. Development builds can contain fixes for newer server versions, but they are more appropriate for a staging server or an administrator who can recover from regressions. Whichever channel you choose, every EssentialsX module must use the same version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Download from the project’s normal SpigotMC release listing for a stable build, or from its official development-download channel when you deliberately need a development build. If the SpigotMC download arrives as an archive, extract it before copying the jars.
Core-only or modular installation
| Setup | Install | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Core only | EssentialsX.jar |
You need homes, warps, kits, teleport and messaging features, moderation commands, or basic economy behavior. |
| Core plus chat | Core jar and the compatible EssentialsX chat module | You want EssentialsX to format chat or display group-aware prefixes and suffixes. |
| Core plus spawn | Core jar and the compatible spawn module | You need spawn-specific behavior in addition to the core command set. |
| Core plus protection or GeoIP | Core jar and the module that supplies that feature | You have a defined requirement for world-protection helpers or geographic lookup. |
Do not install a module merely because it is included in a download archive. Extra jars create extra configuration and compatibility surfaces; remove modules you are not using.

Back up the server before installation
Stop the server cleanly before copying or replacing plugin jars. A backup should include the entire server directory, with particular attention to plugins/Essentials/, worlds, and any permissions or economy data. A backup made while the server is still writing YAML or player data may be incomplete.
- Record the current Minecraft version, server implementation, Java version, and existing plugin versions.
- Copy the current
plugins/Essentials/directory to storage outside the live server. - For a migration, preserve the old Essentials jars until the new installation has started successfully and the data has been checked.
- Plan a maintenance window so players cannot change data while files are being replaced.
Install EssentialsX step by step
- Stop the server. Use the server panel’s stop action or the console stop command and wait for the process to finish. Do not replace jars while the server is running.
- Download the matching build. Select a stable release or an intentional development build that lists support for your exact Minecraft and server version. Extract the archive if necessary.
- Open the server’s plugin directory. Navigate to
plugins/, not the world directory and not the server root. - Copy the jars. Place
EssentialsX.jarinplugins/. Add only the optional module jars you selected, and keep all EssentialsX jars on the same release version. - Start the server. Watch the console from the beginning of startup. EssentialsX should report a successful load and then create its configuration files.
- Check the plugin list. Use the server’s plugin-list facility or management panel and verify that EssentialsX and each intentionally installed module appear as enabled.
- Stop once more before editing YAML. Editing generated files while the server is running can be overwritten by the next save. Make the first changes with the server stopped, then restart.
A successful startup creates the main configuration directory at plugins/Essentials/. If the directory is not created, treat that as a load failure rather than manually creating a replacement configuration.

Configure the generated files safely
Use the configuration shipped with the installed release as your reference. EssentialsX adds or changes settings over time, so copying an old config.yml wholesale can omit new options or preserve obsolete behavior. Keep a backup of the generated files before each edit, and preserve YAML indentation.
Settings most servers decide first
- Server MOTD and messages: Set the wording players see when joining and when EssentialsX sends command feedback.
- Homes, warps, and kits: Decide which roles may create or use them, whether limits apply, and whether kits have cooldowns or costs.
- Teleport safety: Review unsafe-destination handling, teleport delays, and cancellation conditions. These settings affect both convenience and the ability to escape combat or traps.
- Economy and command costs: Define whether selected commands charge money and ensure the economy provider used by the rest of the server agrees with those rules.
- Disabled commands: Disable commands that overlap with another plugin or do not fit your server’s rules. Test aliases after disabling them, because another plugin may still provide a command with a similar name.
- Spawn behavior: Set how first joins, respawns, and explicit spawn actions should work, especially if your server has multiple worlds.
- Per-group behavior: Keep global defaults conservative and use the permissions system for role-specific access rather than making every player an operator.
After validating a change, restart the server and test it in-game. If a setting appears to do nothing, compare the file with a freshly generated configuration from the same EssentialsX release before changing additional keys.

Set up permissions with LuckPerms and Vault
Build roles before granting nodes
LuckPerms is the recommended permissions and groups plugin for EssentialsX. Create roles such as a default player, moderator, and administrator, then grant each role only the EssentialsX permission nodes required for its job. Test with a non-operator account; operators can bypass restrictions and hide a mistake in your permission design.
Use the permission node names documented for the exact EssentialsX build you installed. Do not grant a broad administrative wildcard to ordinary players. Start with the smallest useful set, test homes, warps, kits, teleport requests, messaging, and moderation actions separately, and add access only when a role needs it.
When Vault is needed
Install Vault when EssentialsX must read prefixes, suffixes, or group information from a supported permissions plugin, or when it must connect services such as economy or chat formatting. Vault is an integration layer; it does not replace LuckPerms or define your groups by itself. Load Vault, LuckPerms, EssentialsX, and any EssentialsX chat module together, then confirm the console shows each dependency enabled.
Fallback behavior and unsupported permission plugins
If you use a permissions plugin that EssentialsX does not directly support and need wildcard handling, the upstream README says to enable use-bukkit-permissions. Without that setting, EssentialsX falls back to configuration-based permissions. This fallback is not a reason to hand out broad access: verify each role with a test account and check the world context used by your permissions plugin.

Configure chat formatting and group display
Chat prefixes, suffixes, and group-aware formatting require the compatible EssentialsX chat module when those features are supplied by EssentialsX. Connect that module to your permissions stack through Vault. If a prefix is missing, check the dependency load order, the group assignment in LuckPerms, and the formatting settings generated by the same EssentialsX release.
Keep formatting rules in one place where possible. If another chat plugin also rewrites messages, disable one formatter or define a clear order; otherwise a correct prefix can be removed or duplicated before the message reaches players.

Routine upgrades
- Stop the server and back up
plugins/Essentials/, the existing EssentialsX jars, and relevant world and economy data. - Read the release notes and verify that the new build supports your exact server version.
- Replace every EssentialsX module jar at the same time. Mixing versions is a common cause of module-mismatch errors.
- Start the server and inspect the console for migration notices, failed modules, and configuration warnings.
- Compare the generated configuration with your backup. Reapply intentional customizations to the current file instead of replacing it with an old file.
- Test permissions, homes, warps, kits, teleport requests, economy actions, and chat formatting with a non-operator account.
Migrating from Essentials 2.14.x or earlier
For an upgrade from Essentials 2.14.x or an earlier Essentials 2 release, stop the server and remove the old Essentials jars. Replace them with the equivalent EssentialsX jars, keeping only the modules you actually use. Before restarting, rename the old config.yml rather than forcing it onto the new release. EssentialsX can then generate a current configuration, while user data is upgraded during the restart.
After the migration, move your intentional settings into the newly generated file one section at a time. This approach preserves new defaults and makes it easier to identify a setting that changed behavior. Keep the renamed old configuration and the pre-upgrade backup until players have confirmed that homes, kits, balances, warps, and permissions behave as expected.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
EssentialsX does not load
- Confirm the jar is directly inside
plugins/and has not remained inside a compressed archive. - Verify that the server is Paper, Spigot, or CraftBukkit and that the EssentialsX build matches the exact Minecraft version.
- Check the Java runtime. EssentialsX requires Java 8 or newer, while your server software may require more.
- Read the first load error in the console rather than relying only on the red summary at the end of startup.
- Remove an incompatible optional module temporarily and retest the core jar alone.
Commands are denied
Check the exact permission node, the role’s inheritance, and the world or server context in LuckPerms. Test with a non-operator account after each change. If only operators can use a command, do not assume the plugin is broken; the role may simply lack the required node.
Recommended Free Tools
Prefixes, suffixes, or groups are missing
Verify that Vault and the supported permissions plugin are installed, enabled, and compatible with the EssentialsX chat module. Confirm the player is actually assigned to the intended group and that the formatting configuration references the group data exposed through Vault.
Module-mismatch errors appear
Stop the server and update every EssentialsX module to the same version. Leaving an older chat, spawn, or protection jar beside a newer core jar can prevent one or more modules from loading.
Configuration changes have no effect
Stop the server before editing, confirm the key belongs to the current release, preserve YAML indentation, and restart after saving. Compare the file with a newly generated configuration from that same build. If the behavior still differs, restore the backup and test one setting at a time.
The server uses an unsupported implementation
Move the test to a supported Paper, Spigot, or CraftBukkit server before diagnosing EssentialsX. The project cannot reliably reproduce bugs on every Bukkit-compatible fork, and the downloads guidance specifically advises against Mohist.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose an installation approach
| Decision | Recommended choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Server platform | Paper, especially for Minecraft 1.13 and newer | Other listed Bukkit implementations may work, but Paper is the project’s preferred performance-oriented target. |
| Release channel | Stable build for production; development build for controlled testing | Development builds may address newer compatibility issues sooner but require stronger rollback discipline. |
| Module scope | Core first, then add chat, spawn, protection, or GeoIP only when required | Fewer modules simplify updates and troubleshooting; additional modules provide specialized features. |
| Permissions | LuckPerms, with Vault where group, prefix, suffix, chat, or service integration is needed | A planned permissions hierarchy takes setup time but is safer than operator access or broad wildcards. |
| Hosting model | Any host or self-managed server that provides plugin-directory access and reliable restarts | Without file access and restart control, you cannot complete a normal EssentialsX installation or migration. |
Operational checklist after installation
- Confirm the core jar and every optional module report the same version.
- Keep a dated backup of
plugins/Essentials/before each upgrade. - Use the current generated configuration instead of carrying forward an obsolete file.
- Test important permissions with a non-operator account in each relevant world.
- Verify teleport safety, delays, command costs, economy integration, and spawn behavior in a controlled area.
- Document which role receives each EssentialsX capability so later permission changes are deliberate.
- Read the startup console after every jar or YAML change and fix load warnings before reopening the server.
How to know the installation is complete
The installation is complete when the server starts without EssentialsX load errors, the intended jars appear enabled, plugins/Essentials/ contains a configuration generated by the current release, and a non-operator test account can use exactly the homes, warps, kits, messaging, teleport, economy, moderation, and chat features assigned to its role. Keep the backup and migration files until those tests pass; then remove only obsolete jars and configurations that you no longer need.
