Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use the same ingredient set and flower mapping, but the effect lasts for different lengths of time. Choose the flower before crafting, keep different stews separated, and treat every finished bowl as unlabeled because the item does not visibly reveal its effect.

Suspicious stew recipe at a glance
The recipe needs four ingredients. Use exactly one of each item:
| Ingredient | Amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Red mushroom | 1 | Required recipe ingredient |
| Brown mushroom | 1 | Required recipe ingredient |
| Bowl | 1 | Container for the finished stew |
| Any flower | 1 | Chooses the status effect |
This is not a normal food with one permanent effect. Swapping the flower changes the result while the other three ingredients stay the same. A blue orchid and a dandelion make Saturation stew; an oxeye daisy and a poppy make Regeneration stew; other flowers create different effects, including harmful ones.

One finished suspicious stew restores 6 hunger points and 7.2 saturation. Its maximum stack size is 1, so each bowl occupies its own inventory slot.
How to craft suspicious stew step by step
- Collect the ingredients. Obtain one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and the flower that supplies the effect you want.
- Open a crafting grid. Put the four ingredients into the grid together. The recipe uses one of each item.
- Check the flower before taking the output. The flower, not the mushroom color or bowl, determines the status effect.
- Move the suspicious stew into your inventory. Because the item is non-stackable, leave a free slot for every additional bowl you plan to make.
- Record the effect. The finished item does not visibly communicate which effect it contains. If you are preparing several varieties, label storage locations or keep each flower-specific batch in a separate container.
In Bedrock Edition, consuming the stew leaves a bowl according to the item definition. Plan for that returned container when managing inventory space. Do not assume that two bowls with identical appearances have identical effects if they were made with different flowers.

Every flower effect and duration
The effect table below reflects the values updated on September 25, 2026. Durations are edition-specific; a number without an edition label is not safe to apply to both versions.
| Flower | Effect | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition | Practical classification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Allium | Fire Resistance | 4 seconds | 2 seconds | Beneficial |
| Azure Bluet | Blindness | 8 seconds | 6 seconds | Harmful |
| Blue Orchid | Saturation | 0.35 seconds | 0.3 seconds | Beneficial |
| Dandelion | Saturation | 0.35 seconds | 0.3 seconds | Beneficial |
| Cornflower | Jump Boost | 6 seconds | 4 seconds | Utility |
| Lily of the Valley | Poison | 12 seconds | 10 seconds | Harmful |
| Oxeye Daisy | Regeneration | 8 seconds | 6 seconds | Beneficial |
| Poppy | Regeneration | 8 seconds | 6 seconds | Beneficial |
| Torchflower | Night Vision | 5 seconds | 4 seconds | Utility |
| Tulips | Weakness | 9 seconds | 7 seconds | Harmful |
| Wither Rose | Wither | 8 seconds | 6 seconds | Harmful |
The short Saturation duration is intentional: the food still provides its normal nutrition, while the flower adds the listed status effect. The table’s values are the safest reference when preparing a planned effect, but update changes can alter exact timings, so verify your game edition and version when precision matters.
Which flower makes the best suspicious stew?
There is no single best flower for every situation. The right choice depends on whether you need food, recovery, movement utility, visibility, or a deliberately negative effect.
Rank #2
- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
Best everyday food choice: blue orchid or dandelion
Blue orchid and dandelion both apply Saturation. They are the most straightforward options when the goal is a useful survival meal rather than a specialized combat or exploration effect. Their effect lasts 0.35 seconds in Java and 0.3 seconds in Bedrock, while the stew itself still restores 6 hunger points and 7.2 saturation.
Best emergency recovery choice: oxeye daisy or poppy
Oxeye daisy and poppy both produce Regeneration. Keep this variety for situations where recovering health is more important than choosing the shortest, simplest food effect. Java applies Regeneration for 8 seconds; Bedrock applies it for 6 seconds.
Situational utility choices
- Allium: Fire Resistance for 4 seconds in Java or 2 seconds in Bedrock.
- Cornflower: Jump Boost for 6 seconds in Java or 4 seconds in Bedrock.
- Torchflower: Night Vision for 5 seconds in Java or 4 seconds in Bedrock.
These options are useful only when their particular effect matches the task. Since suspicious stew cannot be stacked, carry only the varieties you can identify and use.
Flowers to avoid unless the negative effect is intentional
Azure bluet causes Blindness, lily of the valley causes Poison, tulips cause Weakness, and wither rose causes Wither. They are not safe substitutes for a beneficial flower. A visually identical bowl can therefore be either helpful or dangerous, depending on the flower used during crafting.
Java Edition versus Bedrock Edition
The broad recipe is shared: one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and one flower. The flower-to-effect mapping is also shared across the two editions in the current table. The difference that matters most while planning is duration.
Rank #3
| Edition | Recipe ingredients | Flower mapping | Duration behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | One red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, one flower | Same mapping shown above | Uses the Java durations in the effects table |
| Bedrock Edition | One red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, one flower | Same mapping shown above | Uses the shorter Bedrock durations in the effects table; the item definition leaves a bowl after consumption |
For example, Regeneration lasts 8 seconds in Java but 6 seconds in Bedrock, and Fire Resistance lasts 4 seconds in Java but 2 seconds in Bedrock. If a plan depends on an effect lasting long enough to cross a hazard, identify the edition first rather than copying a Java duration into a Bedrock guide.
Getting the ingredients in survival
Red and brown mushrooms
You need one mushroom of each color for every bowl of stew. The colors are not interchangeable: two red mushrooms or two brown mushrooms do not satisfy the stated ingredient set. Gather enough of both colors before opening the crafting grid so you do not accidentally prepare the wrong combination.
A bowl
A bowl is the container ingredient. Since suspicious stew is non-stackable, estimate how many bowls you will need before crafting a large batch and leave enough inventory space for the resulting individual items.
A flower chosen for its effect
Collect the exact flower associated with the effect you want. If flower availability differs in your current biome, use the beneficial flower you can reliably obtain rather than assuming every flower makes the same kind of stew. Keep harmful flowers away from your food-production area to reduce the chance of selecting one accidentally.

Making suspicious stew with a brown mooshroom
A brown mooshroom offers an alternative when you do not want to assemble the normal crafting recipe. Feed the brown mooshroom a flower, then use a bowl to milk it. The resulting suspicious stew corresponds to the flower supplied to the mooshroom.

- Have a flower with the desired effect ready.
- Feed that flower to the brown mooshroom.
- Use an empty bowl on the brown mooshroom to obtain the corresponding suspicious stew.
- Separate or label the resulting bowl because the item itself does not display its effect.
This method still requires deliberate flower selection. Feeding an azure bluet, lily of the valley, tulip, or wither rose produces a stew with a harmful effect just as the crafting recipe does.
Other ways to obtain suspicious stew
Generated loot
Suspicious stew can appear in loot from shipwrecks and desert wells. Loot is an alternative source when you have not yet gathered both mushroom colors or do not have a flower available for crafting. Because a found bowl does not visibly identify its effect, treat an unknown stew cautiously and keep it separate from varieties you made yourself.

Expert farmer villagers
An expert farmer villager can sell suspicious stew for one emerald. This gives you a trading route when you prefer to spend an emerald instead of collecting the ingredients. The same identification warning applies: the item’s appearance does not tell you which effect it contains.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Nutrition, stacking, and identification
- Nutrition: Each bowl restores 6 hunger points.
- Saturation: Each bowl provides 7.2 saturation.
- Stacking: The maximum stack size is 1, so bowls cannot share an inventory slot.
- Effect visibility: A completed suspicious stew does not visibly communicate its status effect to the player.
- Bedrock container behavior: Bedrock’s item definition specifies that a bowl remains after consumption.
These mechanics make organization more important than with ordinary food. Store Saturation, Regeneration, utility, and harmful varieties in clearly separated locations. If you use multiple containers, label each one by flower or effect rather than relying on the identical bowl icon.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
The recipe produces no suspicious stew
Check that the grid contains one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and one flower. The two mushroom colors are both required, and the bowl is not optional. Remove duplicate ingredients and replace any second mushroom with the missing color.

The stew has an unexpected effect
Identify the flower used at crafting time. The flower controls the effect, so an unexpected result usually means the wrong flower was selected or an unlabeled bowl was used from storage. Compare it with the effects table before consuming another bowl.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The duration does not match a guide
Confirm whether the guide describes Java or Bedrock. For the same flower, Bedrock durations are shorter in the current table. Also check the game version because the effects table was updated September 25, 2026 and exact values are update-sensitive.
You cannot combine bowls into one stack
That behavior is normal. Suspicious stew has a maximum stack size of 1. Reserve one inventory slot per bowl or move prepared batches into separate storage.
You are unsure what a found stew does
Do not treat an unidentified bowl as a known food. Keep it separate from labeled batches and use the known-flower crafting method when you need a predictable effect.
A practical flower-selection checklist
- Need a general-purpose meal with a beneficial effect? Choose a blue orchid or dandelion for Saturation.
- Need a recovery option? Choose an oxeye daisy or poppy for Regeneration.
- Need a short, situation-specific utility effect? Choose allium, cornflower, or torchflower according to the listed effect.
- Trying to avoid harmful outcomes? Do not use azure bluet, lily of the valley, tulips, or wither rose.
- Playing Bedrock? Use the Bedrock duration, not the Java number.
- Preparing several varieties? Label them immediately because the finished bowls look the same and do not reveal their effects.
Before relying on a batch
- Check your edition: Java or Bedrock.
- Check the game version if the exact duration matters.
- Confirm the flower-to-effect mapping.
- Craft one test bowl before making a large supply.
- Store each effect separately and keep harmful varieties away from everyday food.
Bottom line: Suspicious stew is simple to craft but not simple to identify after crafting. Use one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and a deliberately chosen flower; choose blue orchid or dandelion for Saturation, oxeye daisy or poppy for Regeneration, and verify edition-specific durations before depending on any effect.
