Install ClearLag v3.2.2 by downloading its JAR from the maintained Spigot distribution, placing it in your server’s plugins directory, restarting once, and editing the generated plugins/Clearlag/config.yml. Start with /lagg check and /lagg tps so you can observe the server before enabling automatic removal. ClearLag can delete configured items, mobs, minecarts and other entities, so every cleanup rule should be tested and announced before it is used on a live world.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What ClearLag does and when to use it
ClearLag is a Bukkit/Spigot plugin intended to reduce lag by managing entities and by exposing measurements of server activity. Its documented features include entity culling, mob-spawner limits, mob-egg and breeding limits, per-item entity lifetimes, tick sampling and memory sampling. Those controls can improve a busy server, but they are not harmless housekeeping: a rule that removes dropped items can also remove a player’s tools, a rule that removes minecarts can break a transport system, and a mob limit can change how a farm works.

Treat ClearLag as one part of a performance plan rather than a substitute for profiling the server software itself. View distance, simulation distance, entity density, redstone-heavy chunks, world generation and plugin behavior can all create lag that an entity cleaner will not fix. Use ClearLag to measure and enforce narrowly chosen limits after you know which objects are actually causing trouble.
Check compatibility before downloading
The maintained distribution listing identifies the current ClearLagg release as v3.2.2. It describes the plugin as Bukkit/Spigot software, lists native major version 1.13, and reports testing across Minecraft major versions 1.8 through 1.20.6. That range is the evidence-backed compatibility boundary; do not assume that a newer Minecraft release will work simply because the JAR starts.

If you run another server implementation, verify that it provides Bukkit or Spigot plugin compatibility before installing. On a version newer than 1.20.6, install only in a disposable copy first and watch the startup log for warnings or failed hooks. A successful startup is not proof that every cleanup feature behaves correctly on an unlisted version.
Install ClearLag step by step
1. Stop the server or use its controlled plugin installer
Use the server console’s normal stop command, your hosting panel’s stop control, or the installation workflow supplied by your management software. Do not replace a plugin JAR while the server is writing files unless the panel explicitly supports that operation. A clean stop prevents a partially written configuration or a locked JAR.

2. Download the JAR from the maintained listing
Download ClearLagg v3.2.2 from the maintained Spigot listing or from the matching CurseForge project. Confirm that the downloaded file is a JAR and that its name identifies ClearLag; do not upload a web page, ZIP archive or an unrelated fork. Keep the original file outside the server directory so you can restore it if an update fails.
3. Copy the JAR into the plugins directory
Open the server root—the directory containing files such as server.properties and the world folders—and copy the JAR to:
<server-root>/plugins/
Do not put it in a world folder or inside plugins/Clearlag/ manually. The server creates that plugin data directory after the first successful load.
4. Start or restart once
Start the server normally. During startup, look for a ClearLagg enable message in the console and check that the server reaches its ready state without a stack trace. The first successful load should create:

plugins/Clearlag/config.yml
The directory name uses the project’s documented capitalization: Clearlag. On case-sensitive systems, use the path exactly as generated rather than creating a second directory with a different case.
5. Confirm the plugin in game or at the console
With operator or an appropriate permission, run a harmless information command such as /lagg check. If the command is unknown, stop and troubleshoot the load rather than trying cleanup commands. Also verify that config.yml has a recent timestamp and contains the generated sections.
Back up and edit config.yml safely
Before changing anything, copy plugins/Clearlag/config.yml to a dated backup outside the active plugin directory. YAML is indentation-sensitive: one misplaced space, a tab character or an unmatched quote can prevent the file from loading. A malformed file produces an error such as InvalidConfigurationException in the console.
Edit with a plain-text editor that can display spaces and preserve UTF-8 text. Keep indentation consistent with the generated file; do not convert the file to JSON, add tab indentation or delete the generated version marker. Make one logical change at a time so a failed reload has an obvious cause.

Leave the generated config-version and other keys in place unless the project documentation for your release tells you to change them. The example configuration enables or disables modules explicitly, but its values are not universal recommendations. A small survival server, a large public network and a technical redstone world need different limits.

Entity and lifetime controls
ClearLagg can cull entities, limit mob spawners, limit mob eggs and breeding, and assign lifetimes to individual item entities. Review every list that determines what may be removed. Protect objects that represent player progress or infrastructure, such as valuable dropped items, minecarts in transport systems, named mobs, villagers, raid-related entities and farm animals. The exact option names and list syntax come from the generated file; preserve that syntax instead of inventing new keys.
If you configure an item lifetime, explain the rule to players in advance. A lifetime is an intentional deletion policy, not merely a warning, and it can run while a player is travelling between a death location and a recovery point. Automatic clear messages should identify what will be removed and when the next cycle occurs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReload after every configuration change
Save the file, check that the editor did not add tabs or trailing syntax errors, and run:
/lagg reload
The maintained command list describes this command as reloading both configuration and schedulers. Watch the console for a successful reload message. If the plugin reports a parsing exception, do not continue issuing cleanup commands: restore the backup, correct the indentation, and reload again. Restart the server if the plugin remains disabled or if a module was loaded only during startup.
Observe the server before enabling automatic cleanup
Use the read-only and sampling commands first. Run them during normal activity and during the period when players report lag, then compare what you see. ClearLagg’s TPS estimate is useful for its own measurements, but the listing specifically cautions that Spigot’s /tps command is more accurate for server TPS.
| Command | Purpose | Operational note |
|---|---|---|
/lagg check [world1, world2...] |
Displays world and entity information | Use it to identify worlds with unusually high entity counts before changing limits. |
/lagg tps |
Shows ClearLagg’s estimated TPS | Compare with Spigot’s /tps, which the listing says is more accurate. |
/lagg performance |
Inspects runtime performance information | Run during representative load, not only while the server is empty. |
/lagg memory |
Inspects runtime memory usage | Use alongside the server console and JVM monitoring. |
/lagg sampleTicks <ticks> [raw] |
Samples tick behavior | Choose a sampling period that includes the lag event you are investigating. |
/lagg sampleMemory <time> |
Samples memory behavior | Use it to look for growth over an interval rather than relying on one reading. |
/lagg profile <time> <type> |
Profiles activity such as redstone | Use a defined interval and type so results can be compared. |
Record the world, time, player count and notable activity with each observation. A high entity count does not automatically mean entities are the cause; it is a signal to investigate farms, item piles, villagers, redstone and chunk loading.

Enable cleanup in a controlled rollout
- Clone or back up the world. Test on a copy or during a quiet maintenance period before enabling a destructive module on the live world.
- Choose one target. Start with the category you have evidence for, such as abandoned dropped items, instead of enabling every limiter at once.
- Review exclusions. Protect items, mobs and vehicles that players rely on. Check named entities, farm animals, villagers, minecarts and event-related mobs explicitly.
- Set a conservative limit or lifetime. Avoid aggressive values copied from another server. A value that is safe for a minigame lobby may destroy a technical survival build.
- Announce the policy. Tell players which entities can disappear, how often a clear occurs and how to report a false removal.
- Reload and monitor. Run
/lagg reload, observe console output, then watch the next scheduled cycle. Compare entity counts and player reports before expanding the policy.
Manual commands that remove entities
These commands are destructive and should be restricted to trained staff:
| Command | Effect | Use safely by |
|---|---|---|
/lagg clear |
Removes entities selected by the current configuration | Checking the configured lists and warning players first. |
/lagg killmobs |
Removes configured mobs | Confirming that protected farms and named mobs are excluded. |
/lagg area <radius> |
Removes entities within a radius | Standing at a verified location and treating the radius as a deletion boundary. |
Never use a manual clear as a substitute for diagnosis. If a clear appears to improve TPS, identify which entity category was removed and whether the improvement lasts. Otherwise you may hide a plugin, redstone or chunk-loading problem while causing irreversible item loss.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Commands to avoid as routine fixes
The maintained listing marks /lagg gc as not recommended and separately cautions against /lagg unloadchunks on later Spigot versions or for general use. Forced garbage collection can create a pause without solving the underlying allocation pattern, while unloading chunks can disrupt farms, redstone and player activity. Use these commands only when you understand the consequences and have a recovery plan; they are not normal maintenance steps.
Permissions and staff access
ClearLagg permissions follow the lagg.<command-name> pattern described in the maintained listing. Grant only the commands required by each staff role. A monitoring role may need lagg.check, lagg.tps, lagg.performance and lagg.memory, while destructive commands such as clear, killmobs and area should be limited to trusted administrators. After changing permissions, test as a non-operator account to ensure your permissions plugin maps the nodes correctly.
Do not grant broad wildcard permissions merely to make a command work. Verify the exact node, relog the test account and check the console for permission-denied or command-registration messages.
Troubleshoot common failures
The JAR is present but no commands work
Check the startup log for a load failure, confirm that the file is directly inside plugins, and verify that it is the ClearLagg JAR rather than an archive or renamed file. Check the plugin name and capitalization in the directory listing. If the server version is outside the documented tested range, reproduce the issue on a supported version before changing configuration.
Best Value
The configuration will not load after editing
Look for InvalidConfigurationException or a YAML parser message in the console. Restore the backup, then reapply changes one block at a time using spaces that match the generated indentation. Ensure values containing punctuation are quoted according to the existing file’s style. Run /lagg reload; if the plugin remains disabled, perform a controlled restart after the file has been corrected.
Items or mobs disappear unexpectedly
Stop automatic cycles or remove the offending rule, restore the pre-change configuration, and identify which list or lifetime includes the entity. Check manual commands and scheduled tasks used by staff. Add explicit protections for valuable drops, named mobs, transport vehicles and farm entities, then test on a copy before re-enabling the module. ClearLagg cannot recover an entity that it has already deleted, so world and inventory backups are the only reliable recovery path.
Reload succeeds but behavior does not change
Confirm that you edited the active file at plugins/Clearlag/config.yml, not a backup or a similarly named directory. Check the console for the reload result and verify that the setting belongs to the correct section. Some startup-level integration changes may require a full restart even after a successful reload.
TPS remains low after cleanup
Use /lagg check, performance and profiling commands while the lag is occurring. Compare entity counts with redstone activity, view and simulation distances, chunk loading and other plugins. Entity removal may reduce one symptom while leaving the real bottleneck untouched. Adjust the server software and world settings only after measuring their effect and testing with a backup.
Updating and maintaining the installation
Keep a copy of the working JAR and configuration before replacing either. Review the maintained listing for a release that explicitly supports your Minecraft version, then test the new JAR on a staging server. Preserve your old configuration until the new version has generated or accepted its expected config-version. If startup reports a configuration migration or a missing key, compare the newly generated file with your backup and transfer settings carefully rather than overwriting the new structure wholesale.
