Before assembly, confirm that your exact Threadripper model appears on your TRX50 motherboard’s CPU support list and check the minimum BIOS version listed for it. TRX50 uses the sTR5 socket, but platform-level compatibility does not replace the support list and instructions for your specific board.
Check compatibility and gather the right parts
Write down the exact CPU model, motherboard model and revision, and installed BIOS version. Consult the motherboard maker’s CPU support list for your processor and any minimum BIOS requirement. AMD’s platform page lists Threadripper 7000 and 9000 series support for TRX50, as well as Threadripper PRO 9000 WX; individual board support still depends on the manufacturer’s list.

- Confirm the CPU is listed for your exact board and identify any BIOS update requirement before assembly.
- Choose memory that matches the board’s supported module type, capacity, and validated configuration.
- Have the Threadripper socket tool and the installation instructions supplied with the CPU, plus the manual for your exact motherboard.
- Verify the cooler is compatible with sTR5 and suitable for the processor’s power and heat-spreader coverage.
AMD’s Threadripper platform information describes the platform family; consult the manufacturer’s TRX50 WS CPU support list as an example of a model-specific list. If you own another board, use its own support page and manual instead.

Shut down the system and switch off the power supply before installing internal components. Use an ESD mat or a properly fitted grounded wrist strap connected to a genuine grounded, unpainted metal point. Remove jewelry and loose items that could snag components. AMD warns that electrostatic damage can be permanent and that installing internal components while powered can damage hardware.

Install the CPU using the sTR5 instructions
Use the socket tool supplied with the processor and follow its printed or pictorial instructions alongside the manual for your exact motherboard. Align the CPU and carrier with the socket’s keyed pattern. AMD’s handling guidance is clear: “The processor should never be forced into the socket.” If it does not settle into place as directed, stop and check the orientation and alignment rather than pressing it down.
Do not use AM4 or AM5 installation directions for sTR5. AMD’s Threadripper processor installation page is a reference, but the accessible instructions do not establish a universal fastener sequence or torque value. Follow the tool and procedure supplied with your CPU and the exact motherboard manual. If those instructions are missing, obtain them from AMD or the board maker before closing the socket.

Mount a compatible cooler before powering on
A Threadripper processor requires a correctly installed thermal solution. AMD advises selecting a separately purchased cooler whose heat-dissipation capability meets or exceeds processor power consumption and applying thermal interface material uniformly. Follow the cooler maker’s mounting and paste instructions, and check that the cooler sits level with adequate contact across the processor’s heat spreader. Do not power on without the cooler properly installed.
As a model-specific reference, AMD lists the Ryzen Threadripper 7960X at 350 W default TDP and specifies that a thermal solution is not included. That figure and included-cooler status apply to the 7960X, not automatically to every Threadripper model. AMD’s cooling solutions page lists options for Threadripper 7000 and 9000 and says those generations use the Asetek-compatible bracket included with the processor. Check the current compatibility list and cooler maker’s mounting details; bracket compatibility alone does not establish full heat-spreader coverage or overclocking suitability.

Install memory according to the motherboard diagram
TRX50 is a four-channel memory platform. AMD specifies the Threadripper 7960X for DDR5 RDIMM, four memory channels, and speeds up to 5200 MT/s; actual operating speed depends on the configuration. ASRock’s TRX50 WS specifications list DDR5 ECC Registered memory. These are vendor specifications, not independent measurements.
Use the memory type and slot-population diagram in your exact board manual, and check its memory QVL for module compatibility, capacity, population, and validated speeds. Do not infer a generic DIMM order or copy a WRX90 eight-channel population illustration for a TRX50 board. AMD’s TRX50 platform specifications list four-channel memory and up to 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes.

First boot and conservative BIOS setup
Start with the motherboard’s default BIOS settings. On the referenced ASRock TRX50 BIOS guide, pressing F2 or Delete immediately after power-on enters UEFI; the key and menu details can differ by manufacturer, board, and BIOS version. Confirm that the CPU and installed memory are detected before changing settings.

TRX50 or WRX90: check which platform you have
TRX50 provides four-channel memory and up to 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes; AMD describes WRX90 as an eight-channel platform with up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes and additional PRO manageability and security features. Compare the CPU support list, memory requirements, expansion needs, board layout, and workload for your build. Neither platform is universally better for every workstation.
