How to Install an NVMe SSD in a Desktop PC or Laptop

Confirm PCIe/NVMe support and the right M.2 size before installing an SSD. Follow model-specific opening instructions, seat it gently, then check BIOS/UEFI or initialize it for storage.

Installing an NVMe SSD is usually a short physical job—but only after you confirm that your computer supports the specific M.2 PCIe/NVMe drive and its size. M.2 describes the drive’s shape, not its protocol: an M.2 socket that supports SATA may not accept an NVMe drive. Check your computer or motherboard manual before buying or opening the system.

Check compatibility before you buy

Look up the exact computer or motherboard model and consult its manual or specifications. Confirm that the slot supports PCIe/NVMe, rather than only SATA M.2, and check which drive lengths and generations it supports. Kingston lists common M.2 module lengths as 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110; a laptop may have room for only one of them. Also check physical clearance and any required heatsink or thermal pad. Kingston explains the protocol distinction in its SSD FAQ.

When more than one drive fits, compare supported interface and generation, length, capacity, heatsink clearance, warranty and support, and current price. Do not assume a newer-generation SSD will run at its advertised maximum speed in an older system. Crucial’s guidance for its T705 drive family says NVMe drives are backward compatible across generations, but not forward compatible; confirm the exact drive and host specifications rather than applying that guidance universally. See the Crucial T705 installation guide.

  • Verify that the M.2 socket supports PCIe/NVMe.
  • Confirm the supported module length and available clearance.
  • Check generation, heatsink and thermal-pad requirements in the system manual.
  • Compare capacity, support and current price only among drives confirmed to fit.

Prepare the computer and protect your data

Back up important files to a separate external drive, USB flash drive or cloud destination before opening the system. Cloning the old drive is optional and is a migration step—not part of physically installing the SSD.

Gather the computer’s owner or service manual, the appropriate screwdriver and the SSD. Clear a work area, shut the computer down completely and disconnect AC power. For a laptop, disconnect or remove the battery only if its manual directs you to do so; not every laptop has a removable battery. Touch an unpainted metal surface to ground yourself, or use an antistatic wrist strap as an additional precaution. Hold the SSD by its edges and avoid touching its connector pins. Crucial’s installation guide gives the same handling advice.

Install the NVMe SSD

  1. Find the slot. Follow the computer or motherboard manual’s opening instructions and locate the M.2 socket. A desktop slot is often visible on the motherboard; laptop access varies by model and may require removing a bottom panel or keyboard. Do not rely on a generic laptop disassembly sequence.
  2. Clear the mounting area. If a heatsink or retaining screw covers the slot, remove it as the manual specifies. If the heatsink has a thermal pad, peel off its protective film before reinstalling the heatsink.
  3. Insert the module. Align the SSD’s notch with the socket and slide it in at about a 30-degree angle. It should seat without force. If it does not, stop and check the alignment and compatibility; do not push it.
  4. Secure it. Lower the free end onto the correct standoff and fasten it with the retaining screw. Tighten only enough to hold the drive in place. Refit any required heatsink and reassemble the computer according to its manual.
  5. Start the computer. Reconnect power and turn the system on. If the original boot drive is still installed, the computer may continue to start from it; that does not by itself mean the new SSD failed.

For a step-by-step installation reference, see Kingston’s How to Install an M.2 SSD. Its guidance also describes inserting the module at an angle; the exact access and mounting details still depend on your system.

Use the drive as storage or migrate your system

If the new SSD is a secondary drive, it may need to be initialized in the operating system before it appears as a usable volume. Follow your operating system’s disk-management instructions and make sure you select the new drive, not a disk containing data you need.

If your goal is to move the operating system and files from an old drive, cloning is a separate process. Crucial’s May 12, 2025 guide describes vendor cloning software and gives estimated copy times: less than 256 GB, 20–30 minutes; 256–512 GB, 30–60 minutes; 512 GB–1 TB, 60–90 minutes; and more than 1 TB, 90 minutes or longer. These are estimates, not guarantees. Software availability and eligibility can change, so verify the current offer with the drive vendor and carefully identify the source and destination drives before starting.

  1. Check BIOS/UEFI recognition. If the drive appears there, the hardware is being detected; a new secondary drive may still need operating-system initialization.
  2. If it is absent, power off and reseat it. Disconnect power, reopen the system as directed by its manual, and check that the notch is aligned, the module is fully seated and the retaining screw has not pulled it out of position.
  3. Reconfirm protocol support. Make sure the socket supports PCIe/NVMe. An M.2 socket that supports only SATA may not detect an M.2 PCIe SSD.
  4. Check system settings and firmware guidance. Review the manual’s BIOS/UEFI settings and the computer maker’s support information for relevant BIOS updates. Kingston advises checking BIOS settings and system BIOS updates; its support FAQ says Kingston SSDs do not require additional drivers to operate. Do not change firmware settings without understanding the system maker’s instructions.
  5. Consult model-specific support. Kingston’s NV1 support page addresses the question, “Why doesn’t my system recognize my new SSD?” Use your own computer and drive support pages for model-specific steps.
