Whether you can move Office 2024 to a different computer depends on how you got the license. A stand-alone retail copy can generally be transferred to another device you own, subject to Microsoft’s limits and removal of the old installation. A copy that came preinstalled on a PC has a narrower rule and generally stays with that licensed device.
First, identify how you got Office 2024
Check whether you bought Office as stand-alone software or it came preinstalled with your computer. The rules differ, and signing in to a Microsoft account or seeing Office listed in a product description does not by itself establish transfer rights. Check the license terms for your specific copy, edition, and region.

These distinctions come from Microsoft’s Office 2024 retail license terms. Terms can differ by copy and region.
If you have stand-alone retail Office 2024
Microsoft’s retail terms say you may transfer stand-alone software to another device that belongs to you no more than once every 90 days. The terms allow an earlier transfer when the transfer is due to hardware failure. The new device becomes the licensed device; this is not permission to keep using the copy on both computers or to rotate it between devices for shared use.

Remove Office from the old computer whenever you move the license. Microsoft’s support guidance describes installing Office on the new computer, following the activation flow, and using telephone activation if that flow prompts or requires it. Uninstall Office from the original computer as part of the transfer. Signing in or uninstalling alone does not guarantee activation.
If you reinstall Office on the same computer
Reinstalling on the licensed device is different from transferring the license to another device. Microsoft’s support guidance covers activation after reinstalling as well as after installing on a different device, but activation may still flag a maximum number of activations after a reinstall or hardware change. Follow the activation instructions for your copy; an activation message does not by itself change the license terms.

If Office came preinstalled on your PC
Do not apply the stand-alone 90-day transfer rule to a preinstalled copy. Microsoft’s cited terms say preinstalled software may be transferred to another user only together with the licensed device, and state that the software will no longer be activated once transferred. That is not the same as moving a license from a failed PC to a replacement PC.
If the original computer has failed, check the terms supplied with the copy and contact the device manufacturer or Microsoft support. The cited terms do not establish a general right to move a preinstalled license to a replacement computer.

If activation says the maximum number has been reached
Microsoft says this message can appear when Office is installed on another computer or on the same computer after a hardware change. It describes an activation problem, not a universal ruling that every license has been permanently lost. First confirm that your copy is eligible for the transfer you are attempting.
- Check whether your Office copy is stand-alone or preinstalled, then confirm its applicable license terms.
- If it is an eligible stand-alone transfer, install Office on the new computer and follow Microsoft’s activation instructions. Use telephone activation if Microsoft’s flow prompts or requires it.
- Uninstall Office from the original computer as part of the transfer. Do not continue using the license on both devices.
Microsoft’s instructions are in Transfer your Office license to another device or another person and Activate Office after reinstalling or installing on a different device. Phone activation is part of the support flow for eligible transfers; it is not guaranteed to resolve every activation issue.

If you want to transfer Office to another person
Moving a stand-alone license between devices you own is different from transferring it to another person. Microsoft’s support guidance describes a process for the European Economic Area (EEA), subject to applicable law and identity verification through Microsoft support. The English retail terms also defer to applicable law for certain EEA transfers. Do not treat this as a worldwide transfer rule; check local Microsoft support and the terms for your copy.
