Back up first—and keep a backup made before installing the beta if you may need to return to public iOS.
Before installing: prepare for beta risks and rollback
A developer beta is preview software intended to let developers test platform changes and app compatibility. Apps or features may not behave as they do on a public release, so use a device you can tolerate troubleshooting. Apple’s guidance is to back up devices before installing beta software: Installing and using Apple beta software.

- Make a backup before updating. iPhone backups can be made with iCloud or a computer. Follow Apple’s beta FAQ for backup guidance.
- Keep a pre-beta backup if you may downgrade. A backup made while the iPhone is running beta software may not be compatible with an earlier iOS release, according to Apple’s instructions for uninstalling beta software.
- Check the Apple Account on the iPhone. The Developer beta option depends on the account having the relevant beta access. Apple describes the account-based selection process in its beta installation guide.
Do not enable Developer Mode just to select or install the operating-system beta. Apple describes Developer Mode as a way to run locally installed development apps, such as apps launched from Xcode or installed with an IPA; it is not part of the beta-update steps in its installation instructions.
Install the developer beta from iPhone Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Select the available iOS Developer Beta option.
- Return to the Software Update screen and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the offered beta.
This is Apple’s ordinary on-device installation route. The beta option or a particular release may not appear for every account or at every time; availability can change. Apple’s current steps are listed in Installing and using Apple beta software.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
When to use the Mac and IPSW method
A restore image is an alternative for someone who intentionally wants to install a downloaded beta IPSW. It is not required for the Settings method.
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac and select it in Finder.
- Hold the Option key while clicking Restore.
- Select the downloaded
.ipswfile.
Apple’s Xcode instructions for installing a beta operating system say the beta image must be the same version as, or newer than, the version already installed on the device. An older image will not work. This method requires a Mac and the correct image, so use it only when you have a reason to manage installation that way.

What happens if you want to leave the beta?
Turning off beta updates prevents the iPhone from receiving additional beta updates; it does not remove the beta already installed. On iOS 16.4 or later, Apple documents the setting as Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Off. See Apple’s unenrollment instructions.
To remove the installed beta immediately and return to the current public iOS, Apple says you must erase and restore the iPhone. A beta-created backup may not restore to an earlier public iOS, which is why the pre-beta backup matters. Alternatively, you can wait for a later commercial release and install it through Software Update. Apple explains these options in How to uninstall iOS or iPadOS beta software.
