If the prompt offers OK instead, the required package may already have downloaded and installed.
What an AT&T carrier-settings update changes
A carrier-settings update is a small configuration package supplied by AT&T for the iPhone’s connection to the mobile network. Apple describes these updates as changes that can improve cellular connectivity and performance or add support for carrier features such as 5G and Wi-Fi Calling. They are separate from a full iOS software update: the procedure below checks the carrier package associated with your mobile service, not the iPhone operating system.

An iPhone may need to download carrier settings after you set up a new eSIM or insert a new physical SIM. The settings help iOS recognize and use the service associated with that line. The update is not a new AT&T plan, does not change your phone number, and is not a replacement for troubleshooting an account, coverage, or hardware problem.

Apple’s general instructions apply to iPhone and iPad. AT&T documents the same path in its guide for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, so menu names can look slightly different on another iPhone model or iOS release, but the shared route is Settings > General > About.

What you need before checking
- A network connection: Connect to a Wi-Fi network or make sure the iPhone has working cellular service. Apple and AT&T both specify a connection for checking or installing the package.
- The affected iPhone: Perform the check on the iPhone using the AT&T SIM or eSIM. A different device cannot install settings for your line.
- A few minutes: Apple estimates the installation itself takes less than one minute. The time needed to reach the prompt depends on opening Settings and establishing a connection.
- No accessory or computer: The documented procedure is performed in the iPhone’s Settings app. It does not require connecting the phone to a Mac or PC, buying a SIM accessory, or installing another app.
If you are using a newly activated eSIM or SIM, finish the normal cellular setup first. Once the line is available to the iPhone, use the About screen to check for the carrier package.
Install the AT&T update step by step
-
Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular service
Join a Wi-Fi network from Settings > Wi-Fi, or confirm that the AT&T line can connect to cellular service. A network connection is needed for the iPhone to check for and download carrier settings. If Wi-Fi is unavailable but cellular data works, the check can use the cellular connection.
-
Open Settings
Tap the gray Settings app on the Home Screen or in the App Library. You do not start this process from Settings > General > Software Update; carrier settings are checked from the About page.

Open General, then About
In Settings, tap General. On the General screen, tap About. Keep the page open for a moment while the iPhone checks whether a carrier-settings package is available.

Accept the update when prompted
If an alert says carrier settings are available, follow the on-screen instructions. AT&T’s device guide identifies the action as tapping Update. Tap that button once, then wait for the alert to close and the About page to return. Avoid leaving the page while the installation is in progress.
-
Handle an OK prompt correctly
If the alert presents OK rather than Update, Apple says this can mean a required update has already downloaded and installed. Tap OK to dismiss the message. There is no second installation button to find in that situation.
Apple says the iPhone remains usable during the installation and that the process takes less than one minute. A brief change in the status of the cellular connection while settings are applied can therefore be normal. Wait for the prompt to finish before judging whether the update completed.

The alert says OK
Apple uses an OK response for a case in which the required settings may already have downloaded and installed. Dismissing the alert completes the interaction; repeatedly reopening About is not described as a way to install a second copy.
No alert appears
A manual check consists of opening Settings > General > About and responding if an alert is offered. Apple and AT&T do not describe a separate button that forces a newer AT&T package when no prompt appears. Therefore, an empty result does not by itself prove that the iPhone is missing an update. It means that no install prompt was presented during that check.
Check the carrier-settings version
You can see the installed carrier information without opening another app:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Find the entry labeled Carrier. The installed carrier-settings version appears next to it.
- Tap the displayed version number to view additional carrier information, if available.
The About screen tells you what is installed on this iPhone. It does not establish by itself that the number is the newest package AT&T offers. Apple directs users to contact the carrier to verify whether the displayed settings are current. When contacting AT&T, have the version shown next to Carrier available so support can compare it with the package assigned to your line.

Why the update may appear after a SIM or eSIM change
Carrier settings are tied to the mobile service the iPhone is configured to use. Apple notes that inserting a new SIM or setting up a new eSIM can require the phone to download settings for the new carrier. That is why the prompt may appear immediately after activating a line, moving a SIM between phones, or completing eSIM setup rather than on a predictable calendar schedule.
If you recently changed lines, make sure the intended AT&T line is visible in Settings > Cellular before checking About. The installation instructions themselves remain the same: establish a connection, open About, and accept the prompt if it appears. The carrier-settings check does not replace the separate steps needed to activate a line or transfer a number.

You open About but see no prompt
First confirm that the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or that cellular data is working, then return to Settings > General > About and check again. If no alert appears, the official instructions provide no force-install control or alternate download command. Check the Carrier entry to record the installed version, and ask AT&T whether that version is current for your line.
The phone cannot connect to Wi-Fi or cellular service
The carrier-settings check requires a network connection. Resolve the connection issue before expecting an update prompt. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, a working cellular connection may be sufficient; if neither connection works, the About check cannot retrieve the package. Apple’s installation instructions do not identify a computer-based substitute for this in-device process.

The prompt disappeared before you tapped Update
Return to the About screen while connected to a network. If the alert reappears, tap Update. If it does not, inspect the Carrier version and contact AT&T to confirm the status. Do not assume that repeatedly opening the page will force a package that the phone is not offering.
The alert offered OK
Tap OK. According to Apple, this wording can indicate that the required settings have already downloaded and installed. Verify the installed version in the Carrier field if you need a record for AT&T support.
Cellular trouble continues after installation
A carrier-settings update can improve connectivity or add support for features, but Apple’s instructions do not guarantee that it will fix a particular symptom. If calls, text messages, mobile data, 5G, or Wi-Fi Calling still behave unexpectedly, use the installed Carrier version when asking AT&T to check the line, network conditions, or account. The About-screen procedure alone cannot confirm the cause of an ongoing service problem.
You want to install a newer version manually
The documented manual check is limited to opening About and following the prompt when one is offered. Neither Apple’s general instructions nor AT&T’s device guide describes a download link, file, command, or hidden switch for forcing a newer carrier package. Avoid installing configuration files from unverified sources; use the prompt supplied by iOS or ask AT&T to verify the current settings for your account.
What the procedure does not change
- It does not update iOS itself. Operating-system updates use a different Settings screen.
- It does not activate an unactivated SIM or eSIM. Line activation remains a carrier setup task.
- It does not guarantee a fix for weak coverage, an account restriction, a damaged SIM, or an iPhone hardware fault.
- It does not require purchasing equipment or installing a third-party utility.
- It does not provide a user-facing way to choose an older carrier package or force one that iOS has not offered.
Official instructions
Apple’s general procedure and explanation are in Manually update carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad. AT&T’s device-specific steps are in Updating Carrier Settings on iPhone — Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max. The AT&T page is written for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, while Apple’s page covers iPhone and iPad generally; both identify the same About-screen path.
