Back up a Galaxy in layers before unlocking its bootloader: run Google’s Android backup, make a Smart Switch copy to a computer or supported USB/SSD, export irreplaceable files so they can be opened independently, and complete each app’s own migration process. Assume unlocking will erase the phone, and do not treat any one backup as a complete, restorable image.
Why a custom-ROM backup must be more than one tap
Android’s platform security guidance says that unlocking a bootloader should trigger a factory data reset: “To prevent unauthorized access to your personal data, unlocking the bootloader will also delete all personal data from your device (a "factory data reset").” Treat that as the safe assumption for a Galaxy, even though the exact unlock path depends on the model, regional or carrier variant, software build and ROM.

A backup indicator is not proof that every app, account secret or protected file can be restored. Google states that not all apps back up or restore all data. Samsung says Smart Switch cannot back up data held in an app’s private storage. A reliable pre-flash plan therefore uses independent copies and app-specific exports rather than relying on a single cloud or Smart Switch job.

What to save before touching the bootloader
Make an inventory before starting. Include anything that would be difficult, expensive or impossible to recreate:

For cloud-synced material, sign in to the service on another device or in its web interface and confirm that current items are actually present. If an app has an Export, Transfer, Backup or Account migration command, use it before unlocking. Account sign-in by itself may not restore encryption keys, local history or authenticator secrets.
Run Google’s Android backup and verify its status
Google’s backup is useful for eligible account-backed data and settings, but it is not a universal image. Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS among the categories that may be backed up. Google Messages may back up RCS messages, while Google Photos handles photos and videos when you use that service.
Start the backup
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google, then All services, then Backup. Labels can vary by Android and One UI version.
- Review the account and categories shown, then tap Back up now.
- Keep the phone on power and a reliable Wi-Fi connection while it runs.
Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. Do not proceed merely because the button completed: return to the Backup screen and check the latest saved date or status for the categories you need. A category that is absent, disabled or still pending needs a different export or copy.

Google explicitly warns that not every app backs up or restores all settings and data. An app can be listed as backed up while omitting locally stored databases, downloaded content, licenses or encrypted secrets. Plan to reinstall applications and sign in again, then use each developer’s documented migration method for data that matters.
Restoration is also Android-version sensitive. Google says a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. Check the Android version required by the backup and by the ROM before you wipe; a downgrade can leave a technically valid backup unusable until the destination reaches a compatible version.
Make a local Samsung Smart Switch copy
Smart Switch gives you a second, local destination. Samsung documents backups through Smart Switch for Windows or Mac and to supported external storage such as a USB flash drive or portable SSD. A USB-C OTG adapter may be required, and a microSD workflow is available only when both the phone and card support it.

Computer backup (Windows or Mac)
- Install the current Smart Switch desktop application on the computer and connect the Galaxy with a USB data cable.
- Unlock the phone and approve the connection or USB-access prompt.
- In Smart Switch, choose Backup and review the content categories it offers.
- Start the backup and wait for the completion message before disconnecting.
- Record the backup date and keep the computer copy separate from the phone. If possible, copy the backup folder to another drive for irreplaceable material.
Samsung’s computer workflow is a supported-content backup, not a bootable system image. Samsung also notes that backup files are not all directly readable on a PC; restoration normally occurs through Smart Switch.

- Connect compatible external storage directly, or through an OTG adapter that matches the Galaxy’s connector and supports the required storage.
- Open Smart Switch on the phone and select the external-storage backup or transfer option.
- Choose the offered categories, confirm that the destination has enough free space, and start the operation.
- Wait for Smart Switch to report completion, then safely eject or unmount the storage.
- Reconnect the storage and confirm that the backup is visible. Retain it away from the phone until the custom-ROM installation is proven.
Buying a larger drive does not make excluded app data appear. Smart Switch cannot back up data in an app’s private storage. Some account-synced items are excluded because they should return after you sign in again. Supported content also changes with the connected device.
Use Samsung Cloud as an additional, selective copy
Samsung Cloud can provide another account-based layer for selected Samsung data. Samsung lists categories such as call history, messages, contacts, calendar, settings, home-screen layout, apps and voice recordings, but the exact selection depends on the Galaxy model, operating-system version, country and carrier.
- Open the Samsung account and cloud-backup area in Settings; the wording and location vary by One UI release.
- Review which categories are enabled instead of assuming every Samsung service is included.
- Run the backup and check its most recent completion time before wiping.
- Remember that Samsung’s support information says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up there. Move large videos, archives and project files to your independent computer or drive copy.
Samsung Cloud is therefore a supplement, not a substitute for Smart Switch and a browsable file copy. A category shown in one Galaxy configuration may be absent on another, and cloud availability does not make private app storage restorable.
Copy ordinary files outside the backup systems
Use a separate file copy for files that must be browsable without an account or restore application. Connect the phone to a computer and copy the folders you inventoried—typically camera media, screenshots, Downloads, documents, recordings and exported app files—to a dated folder on the computer or external drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerify the copy instead of trusting a progress bar
- Compare the destination’s folders and approximate item counts with the phone.
- Open representative photos, videos, documents and recordings directly from the destination.
- Check several large files, not only small images.
- Safely eject the drive, reconnect it and open samples again.
- Keep a second copy of irreplaceable material when practical.
This copy protects ordinary files independently of Google accounts, Samsung services and app restore rules. It does not preserve installed-app state, protected data, settings or a bootable Android system.

Check the backup media and connection before you need it
External-storage backups fail for mundane reasons as well as software limitations. Check that the phone’s connector, OTG adapter, cable and drive are physically compatible, and that the destination has more free space than the selected content. A drive that mounts for file browsing may still be unsuitable for the Smart Switch workflow if the phone does not support that storage path. Likewise, a microSD plan is relevant only on models and cards that support it.
Keep the computer or drive copy disconnected after verification and store it separately from the handset. If the phone is lost, damaged or wiped during unlocking, a backup left plugged into it is not a second copy. Label dated folders clearly, and do not delete the original phone data until you have tested the restore or import on the flashed system.
Handle Secure Folder as a separate risk
Samsung’s current US support guidance says Secure Folder data backup is no longer available. Samsung describes Smart Switch as a possible transfer route, but says Secure Folder restore functionality is unavailable on Android 16 with One UI 8 or higher. The behavior is software-version-sensitive, so inspect the options shown on your exact handset before wiping.
- Open Secure Folder and identify every file, note and app instance you need.
- Use any export or share function that Samsung or the individual app permits.
- Move exported files to ordinary storage, then include them in your independently verified file copy.
- Do not assume that a Smart Switch transfer or later sign-in will recreate Secure Folder content after flashing.
Complete app-specific migration before unlocking
Authenticators and passkeys
Use the authenticator’s official transfer, cloud-sync or encrypted-export feature. Confirm the destination account can generate codes before deleting or wiping the source. Save recovery codes in a private, offline location; never paste secret keys into a public guide, shared document or unencrypted backup.
Encrypted messaging
Follow the messenger’s device-transfer procedure, including its PIN, passphrase, QR pairing or encrypted backup requirements. Verify that the new or secondary device can open recent history before the old phone is erased.
Banking, password managers and work apps
Confirm that you can complete the provider’s recovery process, including identity checks, backup codes or administrator approval. Some applications intentionally prevent their secrets from being copied by Android or Smart Switch.

Compare the available backup methods
| Method | Useful for | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Google Android backup | Eligible apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS; Google services provide additional app-specific backup categories. | Not every app backs up or restores all data; Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours; restoration cannot move a higher-version Android backup to a lower-version Android phone. |
| Samsung Cloud | Selected Samsung categories such as history, messages, contacts, calendar, settings, home screen, apps and voice recordings. | Items vary by model, operating system, country and carrier. Samsung’s support page says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up. |
| Smart Switch on PC or Mac | Local Samsung backup and supported-content transfer. | Private app storage and other unsupported content are excluded; backup files are not all directly readable on a computer. |
| Smart Switch to USB, SSD or microSD | A local copy kept away from the phone, with restoration through Smart Switch where supported. | Connector, OTG support, card compatibility and free capacity matter. It remains a supported-content backup, not a complete system image. |
| Independent file copy | Photos, videos, downloads, documents and exported files that can be opened directly. | Does not preserve app state, protected data, settings or a bootable system. |
Use the exact unlock and ROM instructions
After backups are verified, identify the phone’s complete model number, region or carrier variant, current Android and One UI versions, and the exact ROM build. Read the maintained installation instructions for that combination. Do not apply a command written for another Galaxy model or assume that every Samsung handset supports the same bootloader-unlock path.
Some Samsung models or software combinations may not expose the assumed unlock option. The general Android security rule still matters: an unlock operation is expected to wipe user data. Charge the phone, remove any account or device-management restriction the ROM instructions require, and confirm that you know how to return to the stock firmware if the installation fails.
Pre-flash checklist
- Google Backup shows a recent saved status for the categories you need.
- Samsung Cloud, where used, shows a current completion time for its selected categories.
- Smart Switch has completed to a computer or compatible external destination.
- Independent copies of irreplaceable files open from the destination.
- A second copy exists for especially valuable photos, records and documents.
- Authenticator, passkey, encrypted-messenger, banking and password-manager migrations are complete.
- Secure Folder content has been exported where possible, with no assumption of post-flash restoration.
- The backup destination is disconnected and stored separately from the phone.
- The exact model, region, software build and ROM instructions have been checked.
- You understand that a custom ROM may use a different Android version and that Google restore compatibility can block a downgrade.
What to expect after flashing
Restore in layers rather than judging success by the first setup screen. Bring back the verified file copy first, sign in to the required Google and Samsung accounts, then use Smart Switch only for content it supports. Reinstall applications from trusted sources and run their own restore or import procedures. Test contacts, messages, photos, authenticator codes and other high-value data before deleting any remaining backup.
If an item is missing, check the app’s documented export format, the Android-version difference and whether the item lived in private storage or Secure Folder. A successful boot does not prove that personal data was recoverable; only opening and testing representative content does.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will unlocking a Samsung bootloader erase my data?
Treat it as a factory-reset event. Android’s platform security guidance says unlocking the bootloader deletes personal data, although the exact Samsung unlock process varies by model and software.

Can I back up a Galaxy directly to a USB drive or SSD?
Yes, Samsung documents Smart Switch backups to supported external storage. You may need a compatible USB-C OTG adapter, and the phone, connector, drive and available capacity must all support the workflow.
Is Smart Switch a complete image of my phone?
No. Smart Switch backs up supported content, but Samsung says data in an app’s private storage cannot be backed up. It is not a bootable system image and may omit account-synced or otherwise unsupported items.
How long should I wait for Google backup?
Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. Check the Backup screen for a recent saved date or status instead of relying only on the completion of the button press.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan a backup from a newer Android version restore to an older ROM?
Not necessarily. Google says a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version, so check the ROM’s Android version before wiping.
Can Secure Folder be restored after flashing?
Do not assume so. Samsung says Secure Folder data backup is no longer available. Smart Switch transfer may be offered, while restore functionality is unavailable on Android 16 with One UI 8 or higher.
Should I also use Samsung Cloud?
It can add a useful copy of selected Samsung categories, including messages, contacts, settings and voice recordings. Availability varies by model, software, country and carrier, and Samsung says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up there.
What if an important app’s data is missing after restore?
Use that app’s official export, transfer or recovery process. Reinstalling it or signing in again may not restore private databases, encryption keys, authenticator secrets, downloaded content or local history.
The Bottom Line
Before unlocking, verify several independent layers: Google Backup, Samsung Cloud where useful, Smart Switch to a computer or compatible USB/SSD, browsable file copies, and each app’s own migration. Unlocking can wipe the Galaxy, and no single method guarantees recovery of private or protected data.
