Importing a file only adds it to Minecraft’s available packs; it does not enable the add-on in a world automatically.

What you need before installing
This procedure applies to Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Add-ons can add custom blocks, items, mobs, recipes and other game content to new or existing worlds. Before changing a valuable world, create or confirm a manual or automatic backup. An add-on can alter world data, and removing a pack later may remove its mobs or replace custom blocks with default blocks.

- An add-on file ending in
.mcpackor.mcaddon, unless the content was purchased through the in-game Marketplace. - Access to the Bedrock installation that should receive the pack.
- A backup of the established world you intend to modify.
- The add-on’s own instructions, especially if it supplies separate resource and behavior components.
Understand the files and pack types
.mcpack files
A .mcpack is a zipped Bedrock resource pack or behavior pack intended for transfer between users. Opening it with Minecraft starts the import process. After import, the pack appears in the appropriate world-editor tab.
.mcaddon files
A .mcaddon is a package that can contain add-on content, including the resource and behavior components used together by many add-ons. Open the downloaded file with Minecraft to begin importing everything it contains.

Resource Packs versus Behavior Packs

Some add-ons need only one pack. Others work correctly only when both components are active. If the download contains two separate files, or its documentation names both pack types, activate both.
Install an add-on on an existing local world
- Import the package. Locate the downloaded
.mcpackor.mcaddonfile and open it with Minecraft. Wait for the import confirmation or completion message. If the operating system asks which application should open the file, choose Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. - Open the world list. Launch Minecraft and select Play.
- Edit the established world. Find the world you want to change and select the pencil icon beside it. Do not select Play yet; the pencil icon opens that world’s configuration screen.
- Open the relevant add-on tab. Under Add-Ons, choose Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Activate the imported pack. In the Available section, select the pack and choose Activate. If the add-on supplies both resource and behavior packs, repeat this in the other tab.
- Check dependencies and warnings. Read any message Minecraft displays about required packs, experiments or incompatibilities. Follow the add-on author’s instructions rather than enabling unrelated options by guesswork.
- Enter the world. Select Play from the world settings, then let the world finish loading before testing the add-on.
The important distinction is between imported and active. Importing makes a pack available to Minecraft. Activation is a separate action performed in the settings of the specific world.

When only a resource pack is supplied
Activate it from Resource Packs. This is appropriate for content that changes appearance or sound without changing gameplay rules. If the add-on promises new mobs, recipes or mechanics but contains only a resource pack, consult its documentation; the gameplay portion may be missing or delivered separately.

When only a behavior pack is supplied
Activate it from Behavior Packs. A behavior-only pack can change gameplay while leaving the default visuals in place. Some creators expect you to pair it with a separately downloaded resource pack, so check the package notes.
When both packs are supplied
Activate the resource component in Resource Packs and the behavior component in Behavior Packs. Enabling just one can produce incomplete results: gameplay may work without custom textures, or the textures may appear while the new behavior never runs.
Install add-ons on a Realm
A Realm uses the same pack activation controls, but the edited world slot must be uploaded so the Realm uses the changed version.

- Open the Realm’s settings and select the world slot you want to edit.
- Open Resource Packs and/or Behavior Packs under the add-on settings.
- In Available, select Activate for every required pack. Activate both components when the add-on includes both.
- Confirm the changes and return to the Realm settings.
- Wait while Minecraft uploads the edited world slot. Do not assume the change is live until the upload has finished.
- Play the Realm and test the content. Other Bedrock devices joining that Realm download and apply the activated add-ons automatically.
For a local single-player world, activation changes that world on the device where you made the change. For a Realm, the additional upload is the step that distributes the configured world to connected players.
Marketplace content versus downloaded files

Marketplace content can be used with existing worlds when Minecraft offers that option. External packages follow the import-and-activate process described above. Keep the source and version information for any external package so you can identify it if troubleshooting becomes necessary.
Test the world after activation
Load the world and check the features the add-on claims to provide instead of assuming a successful import means successful operation.

- Look for the new item, block, mob or recipe in the places described by the add-on’s instructions.
- Test a new feature in a low-risk area before making changes to an important build.
- Verify both appearance and behavior when the add-on supplied two packs.
- Check that existing redstone, farms, commands and other heavily modified areas still work as expected.
- Leave the world and reopen it once if the add-on documentation says that a reload is required.
A pack can be present in the available list yet fail to provide its advertised feature if the wrong component is active, a required companion pack is missing, or another pack overrides it.

The imported pack is not listed
- Confirm that Minecraft opened the file, rather than a file manager or archive utility.
- Check the filename extension. The supported package forms described here are
.mcpackand.mcaddon. - Restart Minecraft and inspect the world editor’s Resource Packs and Behavior Packs tabs again.
- If the package contains separate components, look in both tabs instead of expecting one combined entry.
The pack is listed but the world is unchanged
- Open the existing world with the pencil icon and confirm that the pack appears under the active section, not only under Available.
- Activate the companion resource or behavior pack if the add-on requires one.
- Read the add-on’s instructions for required world settings or a reload, and test a feature that is definitely included.
The world shows errors or behaves incorrectly
Multiple add-ons can conflict. Minecraft Help recommends disabling optional packs one at a time to identify the problematic pack. Remove one suspect pack, load the world, and test again; repeat until the conflicting combination is isolated. Record which pack was removed so you can restore a known-good configuration.
Removing the add-on changed the world
Disabling an add-on is not guaranteed to leave every change intact. Minecraft Help warns that the add-on’s mobs may be removed and its blocks may be replaced with default blocks. If the result is unacceptable, stop making further changes and restore a manual or automatic backup from before the add-on was activated.
Backups and recovery
A backup is the safest way to experiment with an established world. Keep the pre-installation backup until you have confirmed that the add-on works and that you want to keep the altered world.
- Back up before importing or activating any unfamiliar pack.
- Use a separate test world when an add-on changes core gameplay, world generation or many existing blocks.
- If the world becomes damaged, use Minecraft’s available backup-restore workflow to restore a prior version.
- For a Realm, identify the correct world slot and backup date before restoring; restoring the wrong slot can replace a different world.
Restoration is a rollback, not a way to merge selected changes. Any progress made after the chosen backup may be lost, so decide which state is more valuable before confirming the restore.

- A pre-installation backup remains available.
- If the world is a Realm, the edited slot finished uploading.
