Yes. A Chromebook can connect to a Linux VPS with standard SSH, without enabling ChromeOS developer mode, when the device supports the built-in Linux development environment. The usual route is to install that Debian-based environment, open its Terminal, and run ssh username@SERVER_IP. You need the VPS address, the correct remote username, and either a password or an SSH private key.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers the Terminal method, a browser-based Secure Shell alternative, first-connection fingerprint checks, Ed25519 key setup, custom ports, managed-Chromebook limitations, and fixes for the errors you are most likely to see.

What you need before opening SSH
SSH cannot identify your VPS from a Chromebook by itself. Collect the following details from your VPS provider or administrator first:
| Item | What it means | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Server address | The VPS public IPv4/IPv6 address or DNS hostname. | Your provider’s control panel or provisioning message. |
| Remote username | The Linux account that will own your session. It may be an administrator account or a distribution-specific default user. | The provider’s image documentation or administrator. Do not assume root. |
| Authentication method | A password, or a private SSH key whose matching public key is installed on the VPS. | Your provisioning choice and the server’s SSH configuration. |
| SSH port | Usually 22, unless the administrator configured another listening port. | Provider instructions or the server administrator. |
Keep the address, username, and port together. A correct password will still fail if it is entered for the wrong account, and a correct key will not work when the SSH daemon is listening somewhere else.

Choose a Chromebook connection method
ChromeOS offers two practical approaches. The Linux Terminal provides the normal OpenSSH client and its command-line options. Google’s Secure Shell extension provides a browser interface with SSH and SFTP support. Both methods still require the same VPS address, account, port, and authentication data.
| Criterion | Linux Terminal | Secure Shell extension |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Enable Linux development environment and complete the Debian-based setup wizard. | Install and open the extension in Chrome. |
| Command-line control | Full OpenSSH syntax, including -i for a key and -p for a port. |
Uses a browser connection form and extension interface. |
| Key files | Keys live in the Linux environment, normally under ~/.ssh. |
Keys are selected or managed through the extension’s workflow. |
| SFTP | Available through Linux command-line tools such as the OpenSSH suite. | Google documents SSH and SFTP support directly in the extension. |
| Managed devices | May be disabled by a school or employer policy. | May also be restricted by extension-installation policy. |
Use the Terminal when you want reproducible commands, scripts, or standard OpenSSH behavior. Use Secure Shell when you prefer a graphical browser workflow or cannot use Linux on the device.
Set up the Linux Terminal on ChromeOS
On a supported personal Chromebook, Google places the Linux switch in the ChromeOS settings rather than requiring developer mode.
- Open the ChromeOS launcher and select Settings.
- Open About ChromeOS.
- Select Developers.
- Choose Linux development environment, then follow the setup wizard.
- Wait for the Debian-based container and Terminal app to finish installing. Google notes that setup can take 10 minutes or more.
- Open Terminal from the launcher when the wizard completes.
The resulting environment supplies Linux command-line tools, including the OpenSSH client needed for an SSH session. The Linux environment is separate from ChromeOS itself, so files you download in Chrome are not automatically in the Linux home directory. If a key is stored in ChromeOS files, copy it into the Linux environment through the Files app or generate a new key inside Terminal.
If Linux development environment is missing, the Chromebook may not support Linux, the administrator may have disabled it, or a work or school policy may block it. Do not attempt to bypass an organization policy; ask the administrator which approved remote-access tool is available.

In Terminal, replace both placeholders with the values supplied for your VPS:

For example, the structure is ssh [email protected]; use your actual address and username rather than this documentation address. If the server accepts password authentication, SSH prompts for the account password. Nothing appears while you type it—not even dots or asterisks. Press Enter after typing, and the remote shell should appear when authentication succeeds.
Specify a nonstandard port
If the provider or administrator gave you a port other than 22, add -p:
ssh -p PORT username@SERVER_IP
Replace PORT with the numeric listening port. A port number belongs immediately after -p; it is not appended to the address with a colon in this command.
Select a particular private key
When the needed private key is not the default key that OpenSSH searches for, use -i:

The path is resolved inside the Chromebook’s Linux environment. A key visible in the ChromeOS Downloads folder may therefore need to be copied into ~/.ssh first. Treat private-key filenames and paths as sensitive information, especially when sharing screenshots or support logs.
Verify the host on the first connection
On a first connection, OpenSSH normally warns that the authenticity of the host cannot be established and displays a host-key fingerprint. This is not a password prompt. It is an identity check for the server you are about to trust.
- Copy or note the fingerprint shown by SSH.
- Obtain the expected fingerprint from your VPS provider or server administrator through a trusted channel.
- Compare the complete value, including its key type, with the value displayed in Terminal.
- Type
yesonly when the values match.
After confirmation, OpenSSH stores the host key locally and normally does not ask again for that address and port. A changed-key warning later is different from the normal first-connection prompt. It can happen when a VPS is rebuilt and the same IP address receives a new legitimate host key, but it can also indicate a man-in-the-middle attack.
Do not silence a REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED warning blindly. First verify the replacement fingerprint with the provider or administrator. If they confirm that the server was rebuilt or its host key was intentionally replaced, remove the obsolete entry for that address:

Set up durable Ed25519 key authentication
Password login can be convenient for a first test, but a key-based setup avoids repeatedly transmitting a password and is the preferred long-term arrangement. Ubuntu’s OpenSSH documentation recommends Ed25519 because it uses a shorter key and requires fewer computational resources than older alternatives.
Generate the key inside the Linux environment
In Terminal, run:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519
- When prompted for a file, accept the protected default location or specify a dedicated path such as
~/.ssh/id_ed25519. Do not place the private key in a shared Downloads folder. - Enter a strong passphrase. The passphrase protects the key if someone obtains the file.
- Confirm the passphrase. The command creates a private key and a public key with the same base name.
The private half is normally ~/.ssh/id_ed25519; the public half is ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub. Only the file ending in .pub should be copied to the server. Never paste the private key into a ticket, chat, web form, or shell command intended for another person.
Install the public key on the VPS
Add the public key to the target account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Many providers offer a key-import control in their provisioning panel. If password access is already working and the server permits it, Ubuntu documents this command as one way to append the public key:
ssh-copy-id username@SERVER_IP
Use the correct port if necessary by adding the appropriate SSH options supported by your client, or install the key through the provider’s console. The key must be added to the same Linux account named in your SSH command; putting it under another user’s home directory will not authenticate your intended account.
Connect with the key
After the public key is installed, connect explicitly:

ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 username@SERVER_IP
SSH asks for the key’s passphrase, not the VPS account password. A successful login confirms that the private key, public key, username, address, and port all correspond.

If the VPS was provisioned for password login and no key is available, use the basic command and enter the password when prompted. Terminals intentionally do not echo password characters. If the password is rejected, do not keep guessing indefinitely: confirm the account name, keyboard layout, and whether the provider supplied a temporary password that must be changed at first login.
Once key authentication works, prefer the key for regular administration and store its passphrase securely. Whether password login can be disabled is a server-policy decision; change SSH authentication settings only through a documented maintenance procedure and keep an out-of-band provider console available in case a configuration change locks you out.
Troubleshoot the common SSH failures
| Message or symptom | Likely cause | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|---|
Permission denied (publickey) |
The server did not accept the presented key, or password authentication is disabled. | Confirm the remote username; verify that the matching public key is in that user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys; check the -i path; and have the administrator verify ownership and permissions on the server’s SSH files. |
Connection timed out |
The address is unreachable, a firewall is dropping traffic, or SSH is not exposed on that port. | Recheck the public IP or hostname, confirm the Chromebook has network access, review provider firewall rules, and verify the expected SSH port. |
Connection refused |
The host answered, but no SSH service is accepting connections on that port. | Use the provider console or another approved out-of-band route to check the server’s OpenSSH service and port configuration. |
| Host-key-changed warning | The stored key differs from the key now presented. This may be a rebuild or an attack. | Verify the new fingerprint first. Only after confirmation, run ssh-keygen -R SERVER_IP and reconnect. |
| No Linux option in Settings | The hardware is unsupported, or an organization policy has disabled Linux. | Check with the administrator and consider the Secure Shell extension if extension installation is allowed. |
When the key file exists but is ignored
Make sure the command points to the private key, not the .pub file. The private key should remain in the Linux environment and be protected by its passphrase. Also check that the key was installed for the exact account in your command. A key installed for ubuntu will not authenticate a connection made as root or another user unless the server administrator separately installs it for that account.
When the server was rebuilt
A rebuild can legitimately change the host key while retaining the public IP. Treat the warning as a security event until the provider confirms the replacement. After confirmation, remove only the stale entry for the affected address, then compare the new fingerprint before accepting it.
Use the browser-based Secure Shell option
Google documents a Secure Shell extension for ChromeOS that supports SSH and SFTP. It is useful when you prefer a browser interface or cannot access the Linux Terminal but can install approved extensions.
- Install the Secure Shell extension through the permitted Chrome extension channel.
- Open the extension and create a new SSH connection.
- Enter the VPS hostname or IP address, remote username, and port.
- Select or provide the required authentication method, following the extension’s key-import prompts if you use a private key.
- On the first connection, compare the displayed host-key fingerprint with a trusted value before accepting it.
The extension does not remove the need for correct server details or fingerprint verification. On a managed Chromebook, an administrator may block either Linux containers or extension installation, so use whichever method your policy permits.
Security practices for Chromebook-to-VPS access
- Use an individual Linux account rather than assuming the superuser account is appropriate. Follow the provider’s image guidance for the correct default username.
- Prefer an Ed25519 key with a strong passphrase for durable access.
- Keep the private key only in the protected Linux environment or another controlled password-management workflow. Share only the public key.
- Verify a host fingerprint on first use and whenever SSH reports a changed key.
- Record the nonstandard port accurately; changing a port does not replace authentication or firewall controls.
- Retain an approved provider console or other recovery path before changing server SSH settings.
- On a shared Chromebook, sign out of the ChromeOS account and do not leave an unlocked Terminal containing an active administrative session.
A practical first-login checklist
- Confirm the VPS address or hostname.
- Confirm the exact Linux username.
- Confirm whether the SSH port is 22 or another number.
- Choose password login for a one-time test or obtain the private key for key login.
- Enable Settings → About ChromeOS → Developers → Linux development environment if your device and policy allow it.
- Open Terminal and run the appropriate
sshcommand. - Validate the host-key fingerprint before accepting a new host.
- If using a key, generate or import an Ed25519 private key, install only its public half in
authorized_keys, and connect with-i. - Record any timeout, refusal, authentication, or host-key message exactly; the wording usually identifies the next check.
For most personal Chromebooks, the Linux Terminal plus an Ed25519 key is the most flexible setup. The Secure Shell extension is a sound alternative when a browser workflow is preferable or Linux is unavailable, provided your administrator allows it and you perform the same address, account, port, and fingerprint checks.
