The documented default is TCP/UDP port 7777 and the default maximum is 16 players, although both can be changed in the configuration.

What SteamCMD does—and what it does not do
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line downloader and updater for dedicated game servers. It does not run a Terraria world by itself. After SteamCMD has downloaded the server package, you launch the platform-specific executable: TerrariaServer.exe on Windows or TerrariaServer in Linux and macOS shell examples.
Keep these roles separate when troubleshooting:
- SteamCMD: logs in anonymously where supported, downloads the current server files and applies updates.
- TerrariaServer: loads a world, listens on a port and accepts player connections.
- Operating-system firewall: permits or blocks traffic on the host.
- Router or cloud firewall: determines whether players on the public Internet can reach the host at all.
Terraria server packaging and the Steam app/tool identifier can change. Check Valve’s current SteamCMD supported-games documentation immediately before installation and use the Terraria entry shown there rather than relying on an old app ID copied from a forum post.

Choose a host and prepare the directories
Self-hosted computer
Use a machine that can remain powered on whenever players need access. A wired connection is preferable for an Internet-facing server, and the host should have a stable local address so a router forwarding rule does not point at a different device later.
Cloud virtual machine
A cloud VM avoids home-router configuration, but you must open the selected port in the provider’s network firewall as well as in the operating-system firewall. Your cloud provider’s public IP can change unless you reserve an address; record the current address before giving it to players.
Directory layout
Create separate directories so updates, backups and startup scripts do not depend on a temporary download location. For example:
terraria-server/ (the downloaded Terraria files)
terraria-data/ (worlds, configs and backups)
steamcmd/ (SteamCMD itself)The names are examples; use paths appropriate to your account and operating system. Grant the account that runs the server read/write access to the server and data directories, and avoid placing the world in a directory that is routinely cleaned by the operating system.
Install SteamCMD
Install SteamCMD using Valve’s instructions for your host operating system. Steam Support states that SteamCMD is now used to download and update Steam game-server files. On Linux and macOS, run SteamCMD from a shell; on Windows, run steamcmd.exe from Command Prompt or PowerShell. Let its first run complete any self-update before issuing download commands.
Do not run the server as an administrator or root unless your operating system requires it for a narrowly defined operation. A dedicated, unprivileged account limits the damage a compromised server process could cause.

Open SteamCMD and use an anonymous login if the current Terraria entry supports it. The exact app/tool identifier must come from Valve’s current supported-games list; no permanent numeric ID is published in that current official entry, so do not substitute an unverified number.

steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir <terraria-server-directory> +app_update <terraria-server-app-id> validate +quitThe angle-bracket values are variables: replace them with the directory and identifier shown in the current documentation. If SteamCMD reports that an app is unknown, unavailable to anonymous users or packaged differently, stop and verify the supported-games entry instead of repeatedly retrying an obsolete command. A successful update leaves the Terraria server executable and its supporting files in the install directory.
Find the executable and test a first launch
Change to the directory created by SteamCMD and start the executable directly. Windows:

./TerrariaServerThe first launch presents the server menu. You can select an existing world, create one, choose a port and set a password interactively. This is useful for confirming that the files run before you automate startup. Stop the process with the server’s normal exit command rather than closing the terminal window abruptly.
Create a repeatable configuration file
A configuration file prevents accidental differences between restarts and makes service scripts practical. Create serverconfig.txt in a known directory, then add one setting per line. A minimal example is:
world=/path/to/terraria-data/Worlds/MyWorld.wld
worldpath=/path/to/terraria-data/Worlds
port=7777
maxplayers=16
password=use-a-long-unique-password
motd=Welcome to the server
secure=1On Windows, use a Windows path such as C:TerrariadataWorldsMyWorld.wld. On Linux, the official default world-save location is ~/.local/share/Terraria/Worlds; on macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Worlds. A custom worldpath is often easier to back up, but verify the actual path on the host before migrating a world. If the file is saved by a text editor as serverconfig.txt.txt, the server will not find it; enable file-extension display and check the exact name.

Keep the password and any administrative details private. A configuration file is plain text, so protect its file permissions and include it in your backup plan.

Create a world when none exists
Use the startup menu
Start TerrariaServer without a configuration file and select the world-creation option. Choose the world size and difficulty through the prompts, then note the resulting .wld path. Add that path to world= for subsequent launches.
Create from command-line switches
You can also create a world non-interactively with the documented switches:
TerrariaServer -autocreate 1 -world /path/to/terraria-data/Worlds/SmallWorld.wld -config serverconfig.txt-autocreate 1, -autocreate 2 and -autocreate 3 create small, medium and large worlds respectively. Use the Windows executable name on Windows:
TerrariaServer.exe -autocreate 2 -world C:TerrariadataWorldsMediumWorld.wld -config C:Terrariadataserverconfig.txtAfter creation, remove the -autocreate switch from normal startup commands so an accidental restart does not attempt to create another world.

Start the server with the configuration
Windows Command Prompt:

./TerrariaServer -config /path/to/terraria-data/serverconfig.txtThe -config <file> switch loads the file each time and is repeatable, which makes it suitable for separate scripts or service definitions. The command-line reference also supports these alternatives:

Use one source of truth for each setting. If a value is in the configuration file, avoid overriding it in a startup script unless you deliberately want a per-launch difference.
Open the firewall and network path
Operating-system firewall
Allow the server executable to accept inbound traffic, or create an inbound rule for the selected port. The documented default is 7777; if you choose another port, use that value consistently in the rule, configuration and client connection. Terraria commonly uses both TCP and UDP, so allow both protocols when creating a cloud or host firewall rule.

Home router port forwarding
- Give the server computer a stable private address, either with a reserved DHCP lease or a manually configured address.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding page.
- Forward the chosen external port to the server computer’s private address and the same internal port.
- Select TCP and UDP if the router offers protocol choices.
- Save the rule and confirm that the host firewall permits the traffic.
Do not test an Internet address from inside the same home network unless the router supports NAT loopback. Test locally first, then ask a player on another network to connect, or use an external port-checking method that you trust.
Cloud firewall
For a cloud VM, create an inbound rule for TCP and UDP 7777, or for the custom port in your configuration, in the provider’s network-security panel. Then add the matching rule to the VM’s operating-system firewall. Opening only one of these layers still leaves the server unreachable.
Connect from Terraria
- Launch Terraria on the client.
- Choose Multiplayer, then Join via IP.
- Enter the server’s local IP address when testing from the same network, or its public IP address for Internet players.
- Enter the configured port. Use 7777 only when the server is actually using the default; a changed port must be entered by every client.
- Enter the password if one is configured.
For a first test, connect from the host itself or another device on the same LAN. A successful local connection proves that the Terraria process and world are running; it does not prove that router or cloud forwarding is correct.

Start each process with its own -config file and open or forward every port that players must reach. Never point two running processes at the same world file; simultaneous writes can corrupt it. Give each instance a distinct log location if your service wrapper supports one.
Back up worlds and update safely
Stop the server cleanly before copying a world. Back up the .wld file, its configuration and any scripts to storage separate from the host. Keep dated copies so you can roll back after a bad update or accidental in-game change.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the Terraria process.
- Copy the world and configuration files to a dated backup directory.
- Run SteamCMD’s
app_update ... validatecommand using the current supported app/tool entry. - Start the server with the same configuration and watch the console for errors.
- Have one player verify the world, port and permissions before reopening the server to everyone.
Do not overwrite backups with an update. SteamCMD updates the server files; it is not a substitute for world backups.
Troubleshooting by symptom
SteamCMD says the app is unknown or unavailable
The identifier or distribution method may have changed. Recheck Valve’s current supported-games documentation, confirm that the command uses the current Terraria server entry and verify that anonymous access is allowed. Do not infer an app ID from a client-game listing.
TerrariaServer is missing
Confirm that SteamCMD’s force_install_dir points to the directory you inspected and that app_update completed without an error. On Linux or macOS, make sure you are in the correct directory and invoke the file as ./TerrariaServer.
The config file is ignored
Check the exact filename and path, including case on case-sensitive systems. Start with an absolute path after -config. Verify that each setting uses the documented spelling and that the account running the process can read the file.
The server starts but no world loads
Check that world= points to an existing .wld file and that worldpath= is writable. If no world exists, create one through the startup menu or use -autocreate with a valid -world path, then remove -autocreate for later launches.
Players on the same LAN can join, but Internet players cannot
The Terraria process is working; the missing layer is usually forwarding or filtering. Confirm the host’s private address, router rule, operating-system firewall and, for a cloud VM, provider firewall. Check that the player is using the public address and the exact configured port.
Players receive a connection refusal
Confirm that the process is still running and listening on the expected port. A typo in port=, a second process already using the port or a firewall rule for the wrong protocol can all produce this symptom.
A second server will not start
Give it a different port and separate world and configuration files. Two instances cannot listen on the same address and port combination.
The server disappears after closing the terminal
The process is tied to the interactive session. Use an operating-system service or a session manager appropriate to your platform, and point it at the same absolute executable and configuration paths. Test the service under the intended unprivileged account so its world and backup permissions match normal operation.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct operating-system access, complete control of backups and the freedom to install or script around the server. It also makes you responsible for power, uptime, firewall rules, router forwarding and keeping the host updated. Managed Terraria server hosting can be useful when an always-on machine or network administration is impractical, but evaluate the service on the following points before committing:

Whichever model you choose, retain an independent copy of world files and document the configured port and startup options.
