You cannot craft a trident in survival Minecraft. The practical route is to kill drowned that are carrying one, then use the weapon in melee or charge and throw it. A drowned’s thrown trident is not automatically yours, so do not assume every projectile you see can be collected.

Once you have a trident, enchant it for the job you actually do: Loyalty for dependable ranged retrieval, Riptide for movement through water or rain, Impaling for applicable aquatic or wet combat, Channeling for lightning during thunderstorms, and Unbreaking or Mending for durability.

What a trident does
A trident fills two roles. At close range, swing it like a sword. At distance, hold the use button to charge it, release to throw, and retrieve the weapon after it lands when retrieval conditions allow. Duncan Geere’s Minecraft guide describes the same controls: you can swing a trident like a sword or press and hold the use button to pull it back before throwing.
The weapon was designed with underwater play in mind. Minecraft developer Jens Bergensten described it as “a weapon that is intended to be used underwater.” That design shows up in its enchantments: several of the strongest options depend on water, rain, aquatic targets, or thunderstorms.

How to get a trident in survival
1. Find drowned
Drowned are the only practical survival source. Search oceans and rivers where drowned naturally spawn. You are looking specifically for a drowned that is visibly holding a trident; killing drowned without one will not produce a trident.
2. Kill trident-bearing drowned
Fight the drowned and collect any item it drops. Mojang’s guidance is unambiguous: “There’s only one way to get one — defeating a drowned.” Tridents are not made at a crafting table, furnace, or smithing table, and ordinary drowned do not turn into tridents through crafting or upgrading.
Bring a sword for routine kills and keep room to retreat from groups. A trident-bearing drowned can attack at range, so approaching in open water can be more dangerous than fighting from a controlled shoreline or platform.
3. Use Looting when you can
A sword with Looting gives you more favorable drop odds when you kill eligible mobs. The exact incremental effect is version-dependent, so it is not responsible to promise a fixed number of kills or a guaranteed time to your first trident. Looting improves the attempt; it does not remove the weapon’s rarity.
4. Understand which tridents are recoverable
The trident a drowned throws is not automatically recoverable by the player. Mojang distinguishes drowned-thrown tridents from player-thrown tridents. Treat an enemy’s projectile as an attack to avoid, not as guaranteed loot. A trident you throw yourself can be retrieved after it lands when the game’s retrieval conditions are met; Loyalty makes that process more convenient.

How rare are tridents?
There is no single edition-neutral number that answers every “drop rate” question. The figures below come from different references, use different wording, and can change with game versions or with whether the statistic describes finding a trident-bearing drowned or receiving a drop from one.

These numbers should be labeled by edition and version whenever you quote them. The one-in-188 Bedrock estimate and the 8.5% Java or 25% Bedrock conditional figures are not measurements of exactly the same event, so do not combine them into one “current Minecraft” probability. Your real experience will also vary because each attempt depends on encountering the right drowned and then receiving the drop.
Finding one by hand versus building a farm

How a drowned farm works
The Minecraft Wiki documents aerial drowned farms for both Java and Bedrock. The cited design uses four functional parts: an elevated spawning platform, flowing water that moves drowned, a drop shaft, and a player-kill area. The point is not to guarantee a trident every cycle; it is to create many more controlled encounters than wandering through waterways.
Build the spawning area
Follow a design intended for your edition, because Java and Bedrock do not share identical spawning behavior. An aerial platform keeps the spawning area separate from ordinary terrain and funnels naturally spawned drowned toward the transport section. Build above a safe area and light or block nearby spaces as the design requires so that attempts are concentrated where you can process them.
Move drowned with water
Arrange flowing water so spawned drowned are carried toward the collection point. Check the full path before relying on the farm: a gap, misplaced block, or water source in the wrong position can leave mobs stranded on the platform instead of sending them to the shaft.

Use the drop shaft and kill area
The drop shaft brings transported drowned to a player-accessible chamber. The player-kill area lets you finish mobs yourself, which is important when you want your Looting sword to affect eligible drops. Keep the chamber protected from incoming attacks while leaving a clear line to the mobs.
Test before expanding
Run the farm long enough to confirm that drowned spawn, move through the water, arrive at the shaft, and remain available in the kill area. Fix the failing stage rather than building more spawning space immediately. A larger platform does not help if water transport or collection is broken.
Choosing the best enchantment
There is no single best trident build. Select enchantments according to whether you value retrieval, mobility, aquatic damage, weather utility, or durability.

Choose Riptide when movement matters more than conventional projectile use. It launches you through water or rain, so use it for crossing wet areas or gaining momentum rather than expecting the normal Loyalty-style return behavior.

Storm and aquatic combat build
Choose Impaling when most of your targets fit your edition’s aquatic or wet conditions. Add Channeling if you deliberately play during thunderstorms and can hit a mob under the required weather. Unbreaking or Mending can then protect the investment during repeated use.
Plan the role before enchanting. A trident selected for Riptide mobility should be judged by how often you travel in water or rain; a Channeling trident should be judged by whether you are willing to wait for thunderstorms and line up a mob hit. “Best” means best for that routine, not highest damage in every situation.
Using a trident step by step
Close-range melee
- Equip the trident in your main hand.
- Approach the target at safe melee distance.
- Use the normal attack control to swing it like a sword.
- Move out of danger or switch to a throw when the target is outside melee range.
Charging and throwing
- Equip the trident.
- Point at the target or location you want to hit.
- Press and hold the use button to charge the throw.
- Release the use button to launch the trident.
- Retrieve it after it lands when retrieval conditions permit, or let Loyalty return it after its short delay.
The exact key or button depends on your platform and control settings; use the control assigned to “use” or “place,” not a fixed keyboard assumption.
Using Riptide
- Equip a Riptide trident.
- Stand in water or wait for rain to provide the required wet condition.
- Hold the use button to charge.
- Release to propel yourself through the water or rain.
- Plan your landing before activating it near cliffs, hazards, or hostile mobs.
Using Channeling
- Equip a Channeling trident.
- Wait for a thunderstorm.
- Throw the trident so it hits a mob during that storm.
- Do not expect the lightning interaction from a miss, a clear-weather throw, or a throw that does not strike a mob.
Common problems and fixes
“I killed drowned but got no trident.”
Confirm that the drowned was actually holding a trident. The acquisition route depends on defeating a trident-bearing drowned, and even the reported conditional rates do not imply a guaranteed drop. Continue attempts, use Looting if available, and record your edition and version before comparing your results with a published percentage.
“A drowned threw a trident, but I cannot pick it up.”
That is expected behavior often enough to plan around: Mojang’s guide separates drowned-thrown tridents from player-thrown tridents. Avoid treating every enemy projectile as recoverable loot. Your own thrown weapon is the one to retrieve, with Loyalty reducing the inconvenience.
“My farm has no drowned.”
Verify the build matches your edition, then inspect the chain in order: spawning platform, water flow, drop shaft, and kill chamber. If the farm is producing no mobs, the problem is at spawning or the surrounding spawn environment. If mobs appear but never arrive, repair the water path or shaft before changing the kill area.
“The farm produces mobs, but no trident.”
A farm increases attempts; it does not make every drowned a trident carrier or every eligible kill a successful drop. Keep the player-kill area accessible so you can use Looting, and judge the farm over repeated runs rather than a single cycle.
“Which enchantment should I choose?”
Use Loyalty for repeatable ranged throws, Riptide for water or rain movement, Impaling for applicable aquatic or wet targets, and Channeling for thunderstorm lightning. Add Unbreaking or Mending when durability and long-term ownership matter more than a specialized effect.
Edition-aware checklist
- Identify whether you are playing Java or Bedrock before using a published rarity figure.
- Record the game version when comparing drop-rate claims.
- Look for drowned that visibly carry tridents; ordinary drowned are not a crafting substitute.
- Use Looting when possible, but do not promise a fixed number of kills.
- Remember that Riptide is for water or rain mobility, while Loyalty is for returning ranged throws.
- Reserve Channeling attempts for thunderstorms and a mob target.
- Build a farm designed for your edition, with an aerial platform, flowing water, drop shaft, and player-kill area.
