How to Install a Perl Module on Ubuntu

Use Ubuntu’s package when one exists; otherwise install cpanminus and run cpanm. This guide covers scope, verification, local Perl environments, and compilation errors.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to install a Perl module on Ubuntu is to use Ubuntu’s package manager first, then use cpanm when no suitable Ubuntu package exists or when an application needs a newer CPAN release. Start by confirming Perl with perl -v. Search for a matching Ubuntu package, install it with apt when available, and verify that Perl can load the module. If the repository does not provide what you need, install cpanminus and run cpanm Module::Name.

Use sudo only for operations that write system-managed directories. For an application-specific dependency, keep the module in a user-local or isolated Perl installation where practical; this prevents project dependencies from being mixed unnecessarily with Ubuntu’s system Perl.

Choose the installation method before running a command

Ubuntu gives you two practical paths. The first is an Ubuntu package installed with apt. The second is the CPAN distribution installed with cpanm, the command-line CPAN installer. The right choice depends on whether Ubuntu packages the module, how current the required version must be, and whether the dependency belongs to the whole machine or to one application.

Consideration Ubuntu package with apt CPAN distribution with cpanm
Repository availability Works when Ubuntu supplies a package for the module and your release includes it. Useful when no suitable Ubuntu package exists; installs from CPAN sources accepted by cpanminus.
Version freshness Follows the version selected for your Ubuntu release. Can provide a newer CPAN release when the repository version is unsuitable.
Scope Normally integrates with Ubuntu’s system-managed Perl files. Can target system directories when writable, or a user-local installation through local::lib behavior.
Dependency tracking apt tracks package files and operating-system dependencies. Perl dependencies are resolved through CPAN tooling rather than Ubuntu’s package database.
Compiler requirement The repository package is installed through Ubuntu’s package workflow instead of building that CPAN distribution locally. Some modules contain XS, or C-based code, and may need make, a C compiler, and library headers.
Rollback and separation Removal and upgrades follow Ubuntu package management. Isolation is easier when the module belongs to one project; changing the system Perl with CPAN requires more care.

Exact package availability varies by Ubuntu release. A module name on CPAN does not guarantee a package with the corresponding name in Ubuntu’s repositories, so search rather than guessing.

Check that Perl is installed

Most Linux distributions provide Perl through their package manager. Confirm that the interpreter is present before looking for a module:

perl -v

A version banner confirms that the perl executable is available on your path. If the shell reports that the command cannot be found, install Perl through Ubuntu’s package manager before continuing. The module commands below assume that perl runs successfully.

Install the Ubuntu package when one exists

This is the preferred route for a module that Ubuntu supplies. It keeps the files and operating-system dependencies visible to apt and avoids maintaining a separate copy of the same dependency through CPAN.

1. Refresh Ubuntu’s package indexes

Update the local index before searching or installing:

sudo apt update

The update downloads current package metadata for the repositories configured on the machine. It does not install a Perl module by itself.

2. Search for the module and confirm its package name

Use the module’s name or a distinctive part of it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
apt-cache search Module::Name

Ubuntu packages commonly use a Debian-style name such as lib<module-name>-perl, but the exact spelling is package-specific. Do not turn a CPAN name into an apt name by assumption. Read the search results and, when necessary, check the package listing for your Ubuntu release to confirm that the result contains the module you need.

A search that returns nothing can mean that Ubuntu does not package the distribution, that the term is too specific, or that the package is unavailable in the repositories enabled for your release. Try a shorter, distinctive search term, then verify the result rather than installing an unrelated package with a similar name.

3. Install the confirmed package

Once you know the exact package name, install it with:

sudo apt install lib<module-name>-perl

Replace the example with the real package name found in the search results. apt will show the package and its dependencies before it proceeds. Approve the transaction only after checking that the selected package is the intended Perl module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Test the module from the same Perl you will use

Installation is not complete until the interpreter that runs your script can load the module. Replace Module::Name in this command with the package’s Perl namespace:

perl -MModule::Name -e 'print $Module::Name::VERSION, "n"'

A successful load runs the one-line program and prints the module’s version when the module exposes a version variable. A load error means the running Perl cannot find or initialize the module; move to the diagnostics section instead of immediately installing a second copy from CPAN.

Install from CPAN with cpanminus

Use this path when Ubuntu does not provide a suitable package, when you require a newer CPAN release, or when the dependency is specific to one application. Ubuntu’s cpanminus documentation describes cpanminus as “a script to get, unpack, build and install modules from CPAN and does nothing else.”

1. Install the cpanminus program

Install the Ubuntu package that provides the command:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo apt update && sudo apt install cpanminus

The apt update portion refreshes package metadata; the apt install portion installs cpanminus and the package manager’s declared dependencies. You do not need to install every CPAN module manually before running cpanminus. Let the installer resolve the distribution’s declared Perl prerequisites, then address any build prerequisite reported in the output.

2. Install the distribution by module name

Run cpanminus with the Perl namespace:

cpanm Module::Name

cpanminus accepts more than a namespace. Its documented inputs include module names, distribution files, local paths, HTTP URLs, and Git repositories. For a normal dependency, the module name is the clearest and most reproducible starting point.

Do not add sudo automatically. If cpanminus is writing to a system Perl directory, elevated privileges may be required. If the destination is not writable, cpanminus documents local::lib behavior for installing into a user-owned location instead. A user-local install avoids changing files owned by Ubuntu, which is often the better boundary for a single application.

3. Record the scope you intended

Before installing a production dependency, decide whether it is a system dependency or an application dependency. A system-wide module can be shared by several programs, but upgrades affect every program using that Perl. A project-local module limits the change to the application and makes it easier to recreate or discard the project’s environment.

When one project needs a separate Perl installation rather than only separate modules, Perlbrew is one documented way to separate that Perl from the system installation. local::lib addresses the narrower case in which the same Perl interpreter is retained but modules are installed in a user-owned directory. Keep the project’s activation and environment settings with its deployment documentation so that the runtime and the installer use the same library path.

Install a project-only dependency safely

System Perl is part of the operating system’s tooling, so replacing or overriding its modules can create conflicts between Ubuntu-managed files and CPAN-installed files. For a library used by one application, prefer a user-local or isolated arrangement where practical.

Use local::lib when the system directory is not writable

cpanminus can use local::lib behavior when it cannot write to the system Perl directories. This lets the module live under a user-owned prefix instead of requiring root access. The important check is not merely whether cpanm reports success, but whether the application’s Perl process has that local library on its search path.

If the module installs successfully but the application still reports “Can’t locate … in @INC”, inspect the environment used to launch the application. Check PERL5LIB, the active Perl installation, and the directory where cpanminus placed the module. A shell in which the local library is configured can behave differently from a service manager, scheduled job, container, or deployment shell that does not inherit the same variables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Perlbrew when the project needs a separate Perl

Perlbrew separates a Perl installation from the system Perl. This is useful when an application requires a different interpreter or a set of modules that should not share the operating system’s Perl tree. The separation also reduces the chance that a project upgrade changes a module used by Ubuntu utilities.

Whichever isolation method you choose, install and verify with the same interpreter that will execute the application. Running cpanm under one Perl and launching the application under another is a common reason for a module to appear installed yet remain unavailable.

Verify the installed module and its location

Use the module-load test after every installation path:

perl -MModule::Name -e 'print $Module::Name::VERSION, "n"'

This test answers the first question—can this Perl load the namespace? If you need to see which library directories that Perl searches, print @INC:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
perl -e 'print join("n", @INC), "n"'

Compare those directories with the location reported by the installer. Also inspect PERL5LIB in the environment that starts the failing program. A path configured in an interactive shell is not automatically present in every non-interactive process.

Interpret the verification result

  • The command prints a version: the namespace loaded and exposed a version value.
  • The command fails with a missing-file message: the module is not in the active interpreter’s @INC, or the installation went to a different Perl.
  • The command reaches the module but reports a prerequisite error: a dependency is missing or an incompatible version was selected; read the installer’s dependency output.
  • The command fails during loading with a shared-library or build-related message: the module may contain XS code whose compiled component or required system library is unavailable.

Fix compilation failures

Not every CPAN module is pure Perl. The CPAN installation guide notes that some modules use XS, which is C-based code. Such a distribution must be compiled for the machine, so cpanm needs a working build toolchain and, for some modules, development headers for the external library the module uses.

Recognize a missing toolchain

Messages mentioning a missing C compiler, make, a compiler invocation, or a missing header indicate a build prerequisite rather than a Perl namespace problem. Ubuntu’s cpanminus package metadata recommends build tools such as make and a C compiler. Install the missing development toolchain or library headers with apt, then rerun the same cpanm Module::Name command.

Install only the prerequisite identified by the error when possible. A compiler alone cannot provide a header from an external library, and a header package will not replace make. Read the first meaningful error in the build log; later failures are often consequences of that missing prerequisite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retry after correcting the prerequisite

Once the required compiler, build utility, or header package is present, retry cpanm. A failed build does not prove that the module name is wrong. It usually means the distribution reached its compile phase and the local machine lacked something needed to produce its XS component.

If the second attempt fails at a different step, treat that as a new prerequisite or source-level error. Keep the complete cpanm output, including the module version and the command that failed, because those details distinguish dependency resolution from compilation.

Diagnose the most common “installed but not found” cases

The package name was guessed

Ubuntu’s naming convention is only a common pattern. Search with apt-cache search and confirm the exact package before installing. If no suitable result exists for your release, use cpanminus rather than repeatedly guessing package names.

Two Perl installations are in use

Check perl -v in the shell where you installed the module and in the shell or service that runs the application. If they identify different Perl installations, each has its own library paths. Install into the interpreter that actually runs the program, or make the application consistently use the intended isolated Perl.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The module is outside @INC

A successful cpanm run can still be invisible to a process whose @INC does not include the installation directory. Inspect @INC and PERL5LIB, then correct the application’s environment or local-library activation. Do not solve a path problem by installing another copy blindly; duplicate copies make future upgrades and diagnosis harder.

Root and user installations were mixed

Installing one version with sudo cpanm and another without sudo can leave the system and user libraries with different copies. Decide which scope the project needs, remove the ambiguity in its environment, and run the verification command under that scope.

The module loads in a shell but not in a service

Services and scheduled jobs often start with a different environment from your login shell. Check the service’s Perl path, @INC, and PERL5LIB rather than assuming the interactive configuration applies. The installation is usable only when the actual execution context can load it.

How to decide between apt and cpanm

Choose apt for an Ubuntu-managed dependency

Use apt when Ubuntu supplies the required module and its version is adequate. You gain operating-system dependency integration and package-file tracking, and updates follow the release’s package management. This is the most conservative choice for modules shared by system tools or several applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose cpanm for an absent or newer distribution

Use cpanm when the repository has no suitable package or when the application needs a newer CPAN release than the Ubuntu package provides. Expect that some distributions will compile XS code and therefore require a compiler, make, and development headers.

Choose isolation for application-specific dependencies

When a module belongs to one application, keep it separate from system Perl where practical. local::lib can provide a user-owned module tree, while Perlbrew can separate the entire Perl installation. This boundary reduces accidental interaction between application upgrades and Ubuntu-managed Perl components.

A repeatable installation checklist

  1. Run perl -v and confirm which interpreter is active.
  2. Run sudo apt update so package searches use current metadata.
  3. Search with apt-cache search and verify the exact Ubuntu package name.
  4. Install the package with sudo apt install when it satisfies the module and version requirement.
  5. If no suitable package exists, install cpanminus with sudo apt update && sudo apt install cpanminus.
  6. Install the CPAN distribution with cpanm Module::Name, choosing a user-local or isolated scope for project-only dependencies.
  7. Run the module-load and version check with the same Perl that will execute the application.
  8. If loading fails, inspect @INC, PERL5LIB, and the installer’s destination.
  9. If compilation fails, install the missing compiler, make, or library headers, then retry.

This sequence keeps Ubuntu-managed modules and application-specific CPAN modules distinct, verifies the result instead of trusting an installer message, and gives you a clear next step when a build or path problem occurs.
