How to Install a Palworld Server With SteamCMD

Set up a Palworld dedicated server with SteamCMD: download App ID 2394010, launch PalServer on Windows or Linux, forward UDP 8211, and maintain updates safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shortest supported route is SteamCMD: install SteamCMD on a 64-bit Windows or Linux host, download Palworld Dedicated Server with App ID 2394010, then launch PalServer.exe on Windows or PalServer.sh on Linux. Plan for four CPU cores or more, 16 GB of memory, fast SSD storage, and inbound UDP port 8211 forwarded to the server. The complete download and repair command is steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit.

This guide covers host sizing, SteamCMD installation, first launch, router and firewall configuration, updates, backups, and the failure modes most likely to stop players connecting.

What SteamCMD installs

SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line distribution tool. In this setup it downloads the Palworld Dedicated Server files without requiring the graphical Steam client. Palworld identifies its dedicated-server package with Steam App ID 2394010. The same command both installs the files and repairs them later by validating the local installation.

Use this exact command in a shell or SteamCMD-capable command prompt:

Host requirements before you install

Choose the machine first. The official requirements list 64-bit Windows and 64-bit Linux as supported operating systems. They recommend four CPU cores or more and 16 GB of memory. A host with 8 GB may boot, but the Palworld Server Guide warns that “8GB is also bootable, but increases the possibility of server crashes due to out of memory.” Treat 16 GB as the practical baseline rather than designing around the lower figure.

Use fast SSD storage for the SteamCMD files and the PalServer save directory. The requirements page states that “Low-performance storage may corrupt saved data.” Storage speed therefore affects reliability, not merely launch time. Leave additional free space for downloaded updates, temporary files, and backups.

Resource Planning target Why it matters
Operating system 64-bit Windows or 64-bit Linux These are the supported operating-system families listed for the dedicated server.
CPU Four CPU cores or more The official page gives four or more cores as the recommendation.
Memory 16 GB 8 GB can boot but has a greater risk of out-of-memory crashes.
Storage Fast SSD Low-performance storage may corrupt saved data.
Network UDP 8211 by default This is the default game connection port and must be reachable through the router and host firewall.

Adding memory when the host is short

If the machine has less than the recommended memory, a compatible 16GB DDR4 RAM kit is a straightforward upgrade category. Check the motherboard’s DDR generation, module form factor, supported capacity, and installation limits before buying. A DDR4 module cannot be substituted for a board that requires a different memory generation, and a kit that exceeds the board’s limits will not solve the server’s stability problem.

Plan the host before downloading

Reserve enough SSD capacity for the initial download, future patches, temporary validation files, and at least one local backup. Decide which account will run PalServer before installation. That account needs to read and execute the server binaries and write the save and configuration directories. Installing as one account and launching as another is a common way to create ownership or permission errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give the host a predictable private address. A DHCP reservation in the router is usually easier to maintain than repeatedly changing a manual address. The port-forward must always target the address currently assigned to the host; forwarding to an old address can make an otherwise healthy server appear offline.

Choose a deployment platform

Palworld documents Windows with Steam, Windows with SteamCMD, Linux with SteamCMD, and an official Docker image. This article focuses on SteamCMD, with Windows and Linux as the practical choices for a self-managed host.

Option Best fit Administration considerations
Windows with SteamCMD Administrators who want a graphical operating system and a short command-line update process Launch with PalServer.exe; configure the Windows host firewall and router separately.
Linux with SteamCMD Administrators comfortable with shells, permissions, services, and firewall tooling Launch with PalServer.sh; keep ownership and execute permissions correct for the PalServer directory.
Docker Administrators already operating containers The official image is documented as an advanced option; persistent storage I/O still needs to be fast and reliable.

Windows SteamCMD is usually the least demanding path when you prefer a desktop environment. Linux is a good fit when the server will be managed as a long-running service and you are already comfortable diagnosing permissions and firewall rules. Docker adds an orchestration layer; use it only if you already understand volume persistence and container networking.

Whichever platform you select, keep the PalServer data on persistent storage. A container or service restart should not remove the save directory. Test a backup and restore procedure before inviting players, rather than discovering that a backup contains only empty configuration files.

Install SteamCMD

Install SteamCMD using your operating system’s normal package method or Valve’s official SteamCMD distribution procedure. The Palworld deployment guide places SteamCMD installation before the server download. Put the SteamCMD files in a location where the account that will run PalServer can read, write, and execute the downloaded content.

Windows preparation

  1. Sign in with an account that can install software and create the server directory.
  2. Install SteamCMD through the normal Windows distribution procedure.
  3. Choose a dedicated directory for the SteamCMD installation and downloaded server files. Avoid placing the installation in a location where the running account cannot write saves or updates.
  4. Open a command prompt in the SteamCMD directory, or make the SteamCMD executable available through your command path.

Linux preparation

  1. Use a 64-bit Linux installation and an account intended to run the server.
  2. Install SteamCMD through the distribution’s normal package or official SteamCMD procedure.
  3. Choose a directory with enough SSD capacity for the server, updates, and backups.
  4. Confirm that the account running the server owns or can write to the SteamCMD and PalServer directories.

Do not mix files from multiple SteamCMD installations unless you have a specific reason. A second installation can leave you launching an older PalServer directory while updating a different one. Record the installation path and use that same path for updates, launch commands, and backups.

Download and validate Palworld Dedicated Server

  1. Open a shell or SteamCMD-capable command prompt.
  2. Run steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit.
  3. Wait for SteamCMD to finish downloading and validating every file. Do not start PalServer while the update is still replacing files.
  4. Note the PalServer directory created under the SteamCMD installation. The official launch examples use the steamapps/common/PalServer path.
  5. If SteamCMD reports missing or damaged content, run the same command again and wait for validation to complete before troubleshooting the executable.

Validation is useful after an interrupted download, an unexpected shutdown, or a patch that leaves the installation in an inconsistent state. It does not replace a save backup: validation repairs program files, while your world data remains in the PalServer save structure.

For repeatable maintenance, save the command in a small script in the SteamCMD directory. A Windows batch file can contain the command on one line; a Linux shell script can invoke the same command and then exit. Keep the update step separate from the launch step so you can confirm that SteamCMD completed before replacing files used by the running server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the server on Windows

Change into the downloaded PalServer directory and launch the Windows executable:

cd .steamappscommonPalServer
PalServer.exe

The path above is the official relative-path example when the command is run from the SteamCMD installation. If you selected another installation directory, use the corresponding absolute path instead. Keep the command window or service process running while testing. Its startup output is the fastest way to see missing files, permission errors, or a port-binding failure.

  • DDR4 260 Pin Non-ECC SODIMM, Timing 22-22-22, CAS Latency of 22, 1.2 Volts

Windows first-launch checks

  • Confirm that the executable remains running instead of returning immediately to the prompt.
  • Read the startup log for errors before asking players to connect.
  • When Windows displays a firewall prompt, allow the server on the network profile you actually use, then still verify an explicit inbound UDP rule for the configured game port.
  • Record the host’s private IP address; the router’s port-forward must target this address.
  • Do not close the command window during testing. Closing it normally terminates the server unless you have deliberately placed it under a service or supervisor.

Start the server on Linux

Use the Linux launch sequence documented by Palworld:

cd ~/Steam/steamapps/common/PalServer
./PalServer.sh

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ./ prefix runs the script from the current directory. If Linux reports a permission error, correct the execute permission and directory ownership for the account that installed and runs the server, then launch the script again. Keep the terminal attached during initial testing so you can capture startup output.

Linux first-launch checks

  • Verify that the shell is in the actual PalServer directory before running the script.
  • Check that the script and its files are readable and executable by the service account.
  • Allow inbound UDP 8211 in the host firewall, or the alternate port you deliberately configured.
  • Use a persistent service arrangement only after an interactive launch works; otherwise a service can hide the original error in a separate log.
  • Keep the service account consistent for updates and launches so new files do not become inaccessible after a patch.

Open the network path

Players outside your local network need two separate permissions: a router port-forward and an inbound rule on the host firewall. The default Palworld game port is UDP 8211. The official requirements explicitly call for both router forwarding and separate firewall configuration.

  1. Give the server host a stable private IP address, either by reserving its address in the router or by using a carefully managed static address.
  2. Create a router port-forward from the public interface’s UDP port 8211 to UDP port 8211 on that private IP.
  3. Create an inbound host-firewall rule allowing UDP 8211.
  4. Start PalServer and watch its log for a successful bind.
  5. Have a player connect using the public address and the configured port, or test from a network outside the server’s LAN.

If you change the server port, update every location together: the server’s launch arguments or configuration, the router’s external and internal mapping, the host-firewall rule, and the address players enter. A mismatch in any one of those values produces a connection failure that can look like a server outage.

Do not expose administrative services merely to make game connectivity work. Forward only the game port you intend to use, and keep management interfaces restricted to trusted networks.

Diagnose LAN versus internet failures

A successful LAN connection proves that PalServer is running and that the local address and game process are usable, but it does not prove that the public path works. If LAN players connect while internet players fail, inspect the router’s destination address, the UDP protocol selection, and the host firewall first. Test from a genuinely external network when possible; some routers do not support reliable hairpin testing from inside the same LAN.

If nobody can connect, return to the process log and verify that the server bound the intended port. A port already used by another process, a changed launch setting, or a stopped executable must be fixed before further router changes help.

What happens on the first launch

The first successful launch creates the server’s save and configuration structure. Let the process finish its initialization before stopping it. Keep the terminal output because it identifies the difference between a missing file, an inability to write the save directory, and a port that another process already occupies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop the process cleanly before moving or replacing files. A forced termination during a save can leave the world in an inconsistent state, particularly on storage that is already slow. Before major configuration changes or game updates, copy the PalServer save directory to separate storage. A backup made on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.

Keep at least one backup from before the latest update and one known-good backup from an earlier session. Label copies with the date and server version so you can identify which world state to restore. Never overwrite the only backup while the server is still running.

Update or repair after a Palworld patch

Palworld clients and dedicated servers need compatible files. Do not assume that an old executable will remain compatible after a client update. Stop the running server, update and validate the files, then start the executable again.

  1. Announce maintenance and stop PalServer.exe or PalServer.sh.
  2. Back up the PalServer save directory, especially before a major update or configuration change.
  3. Run steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit.
  4. Wait for the command to complete without interrupting SteamCMD.
  5. Start the server using the platform command and inspect the startup log.
  6. Confirm that the router and firewall still point to the same host and UDP port.

Running the update while PalServer is active risks replacing files that the process is using. If the server fails after an update, first confirm that SteamCMD completed, then inspect the startup log, verify the save directory is writable, and recheck the network rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply the same sequence for a repair after a crash: stop the process, preserve the save directory, validate App ID 2394010, then launch again. If validation reports no changes but the server still fails, the problem is more likely a permission, storage, port, or configuration issue than a missing download.

Update appears stuck SteamCMD still validating or waiting on a file Allow the command to finish, check its final status, and do not launch a second updater against the same directory.

Operational checklist

  • 64-bit Windows or Linux host selected.
  • Four or more CPU cores available.
  • 16 GB memory installed; do not design around the 8 GB bootable minimum.
  • PalServer files stored on fast SSD storage.
  • SteamCMD installed and able to run the anonymous login command.
  • App ID 2394010 downloaded and validated.
  • Windows launched with PalServer.exe or Linux with ./PalServer.sh.
  • UDP 8211 forwarded by the router and allowed by the host firewall.
  • PalServer save directory included in a backup routine.
  • Server stopped before updates, update command completed, and executable restarted.
  • Private host IP reserved so the forwarding rule does not drift.
  • At least one backup stored separately from the live server disk.

Which setup is right for you?

Use Windows SteamCMD when you want the shortest path from installation to administration and prefer graphical system tools around a command-line updater. Use Linux SteamCMD when you already manage shell sessions, permissions, and firewall rules and want the server host to remain focused on a long-running service. Use Docker only when container administration is already part of your workflow and you can guarantee persistent, high-performance storage for the PalServer data.

There is no published official player-capacity, uptime, or performance number to use as a sizing promise. The defensible baseline is the documented hardware target—four or more CPU cores, 16 GB of memory, and fast SSD storage—followed by observation of your own server logs and resource use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Palworld SteamCMD App ID?

The Palworld Dedicated Server App ID is 2394010. Install or repair it with steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I run a Palworld dedicated server with 8 GB of RAM?

It may boot, but the Palworld Server Guide says 8 GB increases the possibility of out-of-memory crashes. Plan for the recommended 16 GB instead.

Which port do I forward for Palworld?

The default game connection port is UDP 8211. Forward it from the router to the host’s private IP and allow the same UDP port through the host firewall.

How do I start Palworld on Windows?

From the downloaded directory, run cd .steamappscommonPalServer followed by PalServer.exe. Keep the process running and read its startup output.

How do I start Palworld on Linux?

Change to ~/Steam/steamapps/common/PalServer and run ./PalServer.sh. The account must have read, write, and execute access to the installation and save directories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need both a router port-forward and a firewall rule?

Yes. They are separate controls. The router sends public UDP 8211 traffic to the host, while the host firewall permits the inbound traffic once it arrives.

Should SteamCMD update while PalServer is running?

No. Stop PalServer.exe or PalServer.sh, back up the save directory, run the update-and-validate command, and restart only after SteamCMD finishes.

What does SteamCMD validate do?

validate checks the downloaded program files and can replace missing or damaged content. It does not substitute for backing up your PalServer save data.

The Bottom Line

Install SteamCMD on a 64-bit Windows or Linux host, download App ID 2394010 with steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit, and launch the matching PalServer executable. Use at least four CPU cores, 16 GB of memory, and fast SSD storage. Forward UDP 8211 through both the router and host firewall, keep the save directory backed up, and repeat the validated update command before restarting after every Palworld patch.
