How to Install a New Graphics Card and Cleanly Replace Old GPU Drivers

A safe GPU swap starts with checking the exact PC and card manuals. Then choose driver cleanup based on the old and new GPU vendors—not a one-size-fits-all utility.

For a routine upgrade, install the new card and use the appropriate driver installer’s clean-install option when available. Before switching from another graphics vendor to Intel Arc, Intel recommends removing the old vendor’s graphics driver first. A deeper cleanup tool such as Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a fallback—not a required step for every GPU upgrade. The exact sequence depends on the graphics card, PC, and operating system.

Before you open the PC

Check the system requirements for the specific graphics card and consult both the PC and card manuals. Confirm that your system supports the card and that you understand its fit and power connections; those details vary by model, and there is no one-size-fits-all compatibility checklist.

AMD’s RX 6000 installation guide likewise advises confirming the system meets the card’s recommended minimum requirements before installation. Its instructions are for that card family, so follow the documentation for your own hardware where it differs.

Choose a driver-cleanup method

Choose the cleanup route based on which vendor’s driver is installed and whether the standard removal method works. A vendor utility is not a universal cleaner: AMD’s tool targets AMD graphics and audio software, while Intel’s Arc transition guidance addresses removing a third-party driver before installing an Intel card.

Installing or updating AMD Radeon software Use the Radeon installer; choose Clean Install if it is offered. AMD says the option attempts to remove detected Radeon software and drivers before installing the selected components. It may appear when an existing Radeon Software version is detected. AMD installer guidance
Removing old AMD graphics software on Windows Use AMD Cleanup Utility if a separate cleanup is needed. It removes AMD graphics and audio drivers/software, but does not modify AMD chipset drivers. AMD Cleanup Utility guidance
Clean-installing Intel graphics drivers Use the Intel installer’s “Execute a clean installation” option, or remove the driver through Device Manager. The clean-install option removes old Intel drivers, resets Intel settings to defaults, and clears shader cache. Intel notes that PC manufacturers may customize driver packages; check the computer maker’s driver guidance. Intel clean-install guidance
Switching from another graphics vendor to Intel Arc Remove the third-party driver in Device Manager before installing the Arc card; use DDU if Device Manager removal fails. Intel documents this sequence for the third-party-to-Arc transition; it is not a universal procedure for every vendor combination. Intel Arc transition guidance
Standard removal fails and a deeper Windows cleanup is needed Consider DDU in Windows Safe Mode. Intel’s instructions describe selecting GPU and the target device, then choosing “Clean and restart” or “Clean and shutdown.” It is a fallback, not a mandatory step for routine upgrades. Intel DDU instructions

AMD: use the right scope of cleanup

AMD Cleanup Utility is for Windows systems and is designed to remove AMD graphics and audio drivers/software in preparation for new graphics software. It does not remove or alter AMD chipset drivers. Do not use it on the assumption that it will remove another vendor’s driver package.

If you are installing Radeon software and the installer detects an existing Radeon Software version, AMD says it may offer Clean Install. That option attempts to remove detected Radeon software and drivers before installing the components you selected. AMD also offers manual product selection and automatic detection in its Radeon installer guidance.

Intel: distinguish an Intel driver refresh from a vendor switch

For an Intel graphics driver installation, the Intel installer’s “Execute a clean installation” option removes old Intel drivers, restores Intel settings to defaults, and clears shader cache. Alternatively, Intel documents manual removal through Device Manager. If the PC maker supplies a customized graphics package, check its instructions before replacing it with a generic package.

For a move from a third-party GPU to Intel Arc, Intel recommends uninstalling the third-party graphics driver before installing the Arc card. Its Device Manager procedure includes selecting “Delete the driver software for this device,” restarting, and repeating removal if the device remains. Intel identifies DDU as an option if Device Manager removal fails.

When DDU is appropriate

DDU is a more involved Windows cleanup path, rather than the default for all upgrades. Intel’s DDU instructions call for entering Safe Mode, choosing GPU and the device to remove, then selecting “Clean and restart” or “Clean and shutdown.” Follow the relevant Intel guidance for the Arc transition; the available vendor instructions do not establish a universal cleanup procedure for every card combination.

Remove the old card and install the new one

Use the PC and graphics-card manuals for case-specific instructions. AMD’s RX 6000 installation guidance describes the following general handling sequence. Before touching components, discharge static electricity; AMD notes that a grounded antistatic wrist strap is one option.

  1. Shut down the PC, disconnect its power cable and attached devices, and wait as directed by the hardware documentation.
  2. Open the case according to the PC or case manual. Discharge static electricity before handling the card; if using a wrist strap, connect it to a grounded object.
  3. Disconnect any power leads attached to the existing graphics card.
  4. Release the card’s case fastener and the motherboard slot latch, then remove the old card carefully.
  5. Seat the new card in the appropriate slot and secure it to the case.
  6. Reconnect the power leads required by the new card, along with the display cable. Close the case and reconnect power and other devices.

If the card does not seat or a connector does not match, stop and check the manuals rather than forcing the component. The required fit and power connections depend on the exact PC and card.

Install the new graphics driver

After the hardware swap, install the software for the new card using its manufacturer’s current instructions. AMD’s RX 6000 procedure calls for installing AMD drivers/software and restarting; treat that as AMD’s sequence for the covered card family, not a rule for every manufacturer or operating system. For Radeon software, the installer can use automatic detection or manual product selection, and may offer Clean Install as described above.
