1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe practical answer: your PSP already includes Sony’s Internet Browser, so you do not need homebrew to browse at all. If you want a newer, actively developed homebrew browser, Tilefinch is the documented option. It requires custom firmware with 64 MB memory mode, a Wi‑Fi profile, and a compatible Memory Stick. The project has tested PSP-3000; PSP-2000 and PSP Go are expected to work but are not qualified, PSP-1000 is unsupported, and PSP-E1000 has no Wi‑Fi hardware.
This guide explains how to identify the right browser path, install Tilefinch correctly, handle storage and network requirements, and understand the compatibility and security limits before you sign in to anything.

Decide whether you need a homebrew browser
Sony added an Internet Browser to the PSP software experience. It can open web addresses, use tabs, save connection settings and adjust browser behavior from the system menus. If your goal is simply to visit lightweight pages on a compatible wireless network, select Internet Browser from the PSP’s network-related menus and use the built-in application. Nothing needs to be copied to PSP/GAME/.

Tilefinch is the current option with the clearest installation documentation in the available material. It is not an official Sony update and installing it does not install custom firmware for you. Custom firmware is a separate prerequisite that must already be working on the PSP.

Choose the browser route
| Option | Custom firmware | How pages are processed | Compatibility and maintenance | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony Internet Browser | No | Rendered on the PSP with the system browser’s memory limits | Built into PSP software; old TLS and certificate support can prevent modern sites from loading | Simple, lightweight browsing without modifying the console |
| Tilefinch | Yes; 64 MB memory mode required | On-device homebrew browser | PSP-3000 tested; PSP-2000 and PSP Go expected but unqualified; PSP-1000 unsupported; updates are supplied by the project | The documented modern homebrew route for a compatible PSP |
| PSPKVM with Opera Mini | Yes, for homebrew execution | Opera Mini historically used a proxy/server-side rendering model | Opera Mini 4 depended on Opera’s legacy proxy service and may no longer connect | Historical experimentation, not a dependable current installation |
The important distinction is that a browser application and custom firmware are different things. Tilefinch can be copied only after the PSP already has homebrew-capable firmware and the required 64 MB memory mode.
Check model, firmware and storage before installing
Confirm the PSP model
| PSP model | Status in Tilefinch documentation | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| PSP-3000 | Tested | The documented reference model for the current release. |
| PSP-2000 | Expected to work, not qualified | It may run the browser, but the project does not present it as a completed compatibility test. |
| PSP Go | Expected to work, not qualified | Use the same caution as with PSP-2000 and verify the installation path for its storage setup. |
| PSP-1000 | Unsupported | Its 32 MB RAM does not meet Tilefinch’s requirement. |
| PSP-E1000 | Not a sensible online target | It has no Wi‑Fi hardware, so it cannot use a wireless browser connection. |
Confirm the memory mode
Tilefinch requires custom firmware that supports 64 MB memory mode. Do not assume that any firmware described merely as “custom” meets this requirement. Check the firmware documentation for your exact PSP model and firmware version before copying files. The installation instructions here do not install or repair custom firmware; that process is model- and firmware-specific.
Reserve free Memory Stick space
The Tilefinch project asks users to keep about 20 MB free for ordinary browsing and updates. Optional language packs use about 1 MB each, the color emoji pack uses about 5 MB, and the optional voice model needs roughly 19 MB of additional space while its verified download and replacement copy coexist. Allow 40 MB free if you intend to use voice recognition. These are project-stated operating requirements, not independent benchmark measurements.

A Memory Stick PRO Duo is therefore an optional storage solution, not a mandatory purchase. Check the card and any adapter’s compatibility with your PSP before buying; do not treat a particular capacity or listing as universally supported.
Install Tilefinch from the PSP install ZIP
Use the full PSP package from the Tilefinch project’s latest release. The critical detail is preserving the complete folder structure; copying only the executable or opening the archive directly on the PSP will not produce a valid installation.

- Prepare the PSP. Charge the battery, insert the Memory Stick, and confirm that the console is running homebrew-capable custom firmware with 64 MB memory mode. Check the model against the compatibility table above.
- Create or save a Wi‑Fi profile. Open Settings → Network Settings, select infrastructure mode, scan for your network, enter its security key and save the connection. Tilefinch uses connection profile 1 by default. You can change the selected profile later in Settings → Device & storage.
- Make room on the Memory Stick. Leave approximately 20 MB free for normal use, or approximately 40 MB if you plan to install the voice model. Remove unnecessary saved data only after backing it up.
- Download the PSP install ZIP. Obtain the current PSP installation archive from the Tilefinch project’s release page on a computer or another device that can extract ZIP files.
- Extract the archive completely. After extraction, locate the folder named
TILEFINCH. Do not rename it and do not copy files from inside it one at a time. - Connect the PSP to the computer. On the PSP, choose Settings → USB Connection. The Memory Stick should appear as removable storage.
- Open the game directory. On the Memory Stick, navigate to
PSP/GAME/. If the directory does not exist, create the folders with those exact names and capitalization. - Copy the complete folder. Copy
TILEFINCHintoPSP/GAME/. The resulting executable path must bePSP/GAME/TILEFINCH/EBOOT.PBP. The sameTILEFINCHfolder should also contain theslot-a,slot-b,dataandNOTICESitems supplied in the archive. - Safely disconnect. Eject the PSP’s USB storage from the computer before selecting Back on the PSP. Removing the cable while files are still being written can corrupt the installation.
- Launch the browser. Select Game → Memory Stick, highlight Tilefinch and press the confirm button. The application should start from the copied
EBOOT.PBP.

└── NOTICES
If Tilefinch does not appear in Game → Memory Stick, the usual causes are a missing PSP/GAME/ directory, an extra directory level created during extraction (for example PSP/GAME/TILEFINCH/TILEFINCH/), a renamed folder, or firmware that cannot run homebrew.
Connect Tilefinch to Wi‑Fi and configure it
Tilefinch reads the PSP’s saved wireless profiles rather than creating a separate network account. Profile 1 is selected by default; if your usable network is stored in another slot, open Settings → Device & storage inside Tilefinch and select the appropriate profile.
According to the project’s compatibility note, the latest ARK-4 supports WPA2. Without that environment, PSP-era hardware generally connects only to WPA using TKIP or to an open network. This is a project-specific compatibility statement, not a guarantee for every router, access point or firmware combination. Modern routers may need a dedicated 2.4 GHz guest network with legacy WPA or open authentication, and an open network should never be used for sensitive activity.
Optional ARK-4 XMB redirect
Tilefinch can be launched from the PSP’s Internet Browser icon through an optional ARK-4 VSH plugin. With that configuration, opening the icon starts Tilefinch; holding L while opening the icon takes you to Sony’s original browser instead. This redirect is a separate configuration, not part of the basic file copy.
For most users, launching Tilefinch from Game → Memory Stick is safer and easier to troubleshoot. Add the redirect only after the standalone application works, and follow the plugin project’s instructions for enabling or disabling it. A plugin mistake can affect the XMB, whereas the ordinary Game-menu launch leaves the system browser untouched.

Updating Tilefinch without breaking the install
Use the browser’s signed in-app updater when the project provides one. Files ending in .tfum or .tfup are updater packages, not a replacement for the manual installation ZIP. Do not copy those files into PSP/GAME/ expecting them to appear as applications.
Recommended Free Tools
Before an update, keep a backup of the existing TILEFINCH folder and any personal data on the Memory Stick. Ensure there is enough free space for the downloaded package and the new copy; the project’s 20 MB everyday-storage guidance is a practical minimum, while voice-model updates require the larger allowance described earlier.
What to expect from the built-in Sony browser
If you decide not to install homebrew, Sony’s browser remains the lowest-risk option. Its settings include a Conserve Memory mode. Sony describes this as reducing memory use so larger pages can load, with lower image quality as the trade-off. Cache sizes can be set from 512 KB through 2048 KB. The settings also expose controls for JavaScript, cookies, proxy behavior and the network connection profile.
These controls can help with older pages, but they cannot add modern certificate authorities or newer TLS implementations to the original software. A page failing in Sony’s browser may therefore be incompatible with the browser’s age rather than with your Wi‑Fi connection.
Historical alternative: PSPKVM and Opera Mini
The PSP Developer wiki documents PSPKVM, a Java ME virtual machine, running Opera Mini. The documented layout places PSPKVM in ms0:/PSP/GAME/ and the Opera Mini JAR in ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSPKVM/Apps/. After launching PSPKVM, select the JAR and choose the J2ME Standard (480×272) device profile.

This route is best treated as a historical experiment. Opera Mini 4 relied on Opera’s legacy proxy service, and that service may no longer accept connections. A successful installation therefore does not imply that pages will load today. It also introduces a server-side browsing dependency that you cannot repair from the PSP if the proxy service is unavailable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tilefinch limitations and security considerations
Page compatibility
The Tilefinch project warns that some sites render imperfectly and that very heavy pages may fail to load. YouTube playback can stop working after YouTube changes its site and may require a browser update. Sites protected by Cloudflare managed challenges do not work according to the project’s own limitation notes.
These caveats make Tilefinch a useful lightweight browser, not a modern desktop replacement. Expect failures on script-heavy applications, pages that assume current browser APIs, large media sites and services that require interactive anti-bot verification.
No process sandbox
Tilefinch’s documentation says it has no process sandbox and advises against using it for sensitive accounts or transactions. Do not enter passwords for banking, primary email, password managers, shopping accounts or other services where account takeover or payment fraud would matter. Prefer public, read-only pages, and never reuse a password on a device whose browser security model you cannot verify.

Wireless security
A PSP may require legacy WPA/TKIP or an open network unless the compatible ARK-4 setup provides WPA2 support. Legacy encryption and open hotspots offer weaker protection than current WPA3 networks. If you create a separate network for the PSP, isolate it from computers, storage devices and smart-home equipment, and avoid transmitting private information over it.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Tilefinch is missing from Game → Memory Stick
- Verify that the path is exactly
PSP/GAME/TILEFINCH/EBOOT.PBP. - Remove any duplicate extraction level such as
TILEFINCH/TILEFINCH. - Confirm the folder is named
TILEFINCH, not the ZIP filename or a localized variant. - Check that custom firmware is active and supports homebrew applications.
- Restart the PSP after safely disconnecting USB storage.
Tilefinch starts but cannot connect
- Test the saved connection in Settings → Network Settings first.
- Check that Tilefinch is pointed at the correct profile in Settings → Device & storage; profile 1 is the default.
- Use a compatible 2.4 GHz network and verify whether your firmware supports WPA2 or only WPA/TKIP and open authentication.
- Try a simple HTTP page before judging HTTPS-heavy sites; certificate and TLS failures can be site-specific.
A page is blank, incomplete or extremely slow
- Reload after closing other applications and tabs to free memory.
- Try a lighter version of the site; very heavy pages may exceed available memory.
- Expect Cloudflare managed challenges and some modern JavaScript applications to fail.
- For YouTube, check whether a Tilefinch update is available after a site-side change.
The PSP freezes during installation or browsing
- Hold the power switch until the PSP shuts down, then restart it.
- Re-copy the complete extracted folder from a fresh download rather than mixing files from different releases.
- Inspect the Memory Stick for corruption and keep the recommended free space available.
- Remove an optional XMB redirect plugin while diagnosing; launch Tilefinch from Game → Memory Stick instead.
Maintenance checklist
- Keep at least 20 MB free for ordinary browsing and updates; plan for 40 MB if voice recognition is installed.
- Back up the
TILEFINCHfolder and personal Memory Stick data before updates. - Use the project’s signed updater for
.tfumand.tfuppackages instead of treating them as manual installers. - Review site behavior after major YouTube or certificate changes rather than assuming an old release will remain compatible.
- Do not use Tilefinch or an open PSP network for sensitive accounts, payments or confidential information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Tilefinch on a PSP-1000?
No. The Tilefinch project explicitly lists PSP-1000 as unsupported because that model has 32 MB of RAM, while Tilefinch requires 64 MB memory mode.
Does installing Tilefinch install custom firmware?
No. The PSP must already run homebrew-capable custom firmware with 64 MB memory mode. Tilefinch is only the browser application.
Why should I copy the whole TILEFINCH folder?
The executable depends on the accompanying slot, data and notices files. The valid layout is PSP/GAME/TILEFINCH/EBOOT.PBP with those items alongside it.
