Download a C64-style font, extract it if it arrives in a ZIP file, and install it through your operating system’s font workflow. Windows and macOS have documented, built-in installation steps; Linux font support is available for some C64 font packages, but the exact menus and steps depend on your distribution and desktop environment.
Before choosing a font, decide whether you want ordinary text in a Commodore-inspired style or a font that maps PETSCII characters for Commodore strings. Those uses can require different glyphs and mappings.

Choose a font for the way you will use it
C64 fonts are not interchangeable: some aim to reproduce the familiar screen lettering, while others prioritize character-set mappings. Check spacing and glyph coverage as well as appearance, and try the font in the application and text you intend to use.
| Font | What the source describes | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Pet Me 64 | Kreative Korp identifies this as the 40-column Commodore 64 version in a broader Commodore font collection and offers TrueType fonts. The page describes extended character coverage beyond the original uppercase-and-numbers character set and gives a release date of October 22, 2019. | A C64-style option with extended coverage; check its glyphs against your intended text. |
| C64 TrueType | Style64 lists Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux support. Its C64 Pro Mono is fixed pitch; C64 Pro is variable pitch. The v1.2 page is dated September 2, 2014 and refers to a later v1.2.1 release. | Choose Mono when consistent character-cell width matters. Check the linked current package and release notes for mapping changes. |
| CBM / CBMShift | DiskImagery64 describes fonts for unshifted and shifted Commodore character sets, including PETSCII strings. It documents `.dfont` files and Font Manager on Mac, and `.ttf` files for Windows and Linux. | The project warns that its PETSCII mappings are intended for printing PETSCII strings, not as a general Unicode replacement font. |
For ordinary Latin text, prioritize familiar Unicode characters and the spacing you want. For PETSCII output, confirm that the selected font’s mapping matches the characters produced by your application; a font that looks right may still display the wrong symbols when the mapping differs.

Install a Commodore 64 font on Windows
- Download a `.ttf` or `.otf` file from the font creator. If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it first.
- In File Explorer, right-click the font file and select Install. For access across Windows user accounts, select Install for all users; Windows may request approval. Microsoft documents the all-users option in its Manage Fonts in Windows guidance.
- Open the application where you want to use the font and select it from the font list. If it is missing, close and reopen the application, then check the font list again.
Install a Commodore 64 font on macOS
- Download and, if necessary, extract the font. Apple lists TrueType (`.ttf`), TrueType Collection (`.ttc`), OpenType (`.otf`), and OpenType Collection (`.ttc`) among the formats Font Book supports.
- In Finder, double-click the font file and select Install. Alternatively, drag the file onto the Font Book app icon or into its window. Font Book validates fonts and can flag errors or duplicates.
- Choose the installation scope if prompted: Current User stores the font in `~/Library/Fonts/`; All Users stores it in `/Library/Fonts/` and requires an administrator password. See Apple’s Font Book guide for its installation workflow.
- Open the target application and select the font. If it does not appear, quit and reopen the application.
What to do on Linux
The cited C64 font projects list Linux support or provide `.ttf` files for Linux, but installation instructions vary by distribution and desktop environment. SIL’s general font guidance likewise points Linux users to distribution-specific instructions rather than describing one universal workflow.
Use the font manager or installation guidance for your particular Linux distribution and desktop environment. Confirm whether it installs fonts for your user account or system-wide, and whether the application needs restarting before the font appears. Do not assume that a directory path or cache-refresh command documented for one distribution applies to another; consult that distribution’s documentation before using a command-line recipe.

If the font installs but looks wrong
- Some symbols are missing or unexpected: Check whether the font is intended for PETSCII mappings or ordinary Unicode text, and whether its character mapping matches the application’s output.
- Text does not line up: Use a fixed-pitch face such as C64 Pro Mono where equal-width character cells are needed. C64 Pro is variable pitch, so character widths differ.
- The font is absent from an application: Reopen the application after installation. If it remains unavailable, verify that the download was extracted and that the installed file is a supported font format for the operating system.
- Font Book reports an issue: Review its validation result or duplicate warning before relying on that font in an application.
