Digital ID acceptance varies by state, checkpoint, business, and app, and presentation depends on a supported Android phone. Keep a physical, acceptable ID available when traveling or whenever you have not confirmed that the requester accepts the Wallet credential.
How Google Wallet ID and a physical license differ
| What matters | Google Wallet digital license or state ID | Physical driver’s license |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptance | Works only when the issuing jurisdiction, Wallet credential, and requester support it. Google lists selected TSA and app uses; state guidance may be narrower. Google’s Wallet guidance | A familiar credential, but it still has to meet the requester’s requirements. At U.S. airport checkpoints, TSA requires acceptable identification. Since May 7, 2025, a non-REAL-ID-compliant state license or ID is not accepted as valid airport identification. TSA’s acceptable-ID guidance |
| What can prevent presentation | Requires a supported, available phone, required settings, authentication, and periodic internet reconnection. A lost, uncharged, incompatible, or unavailable phone can prevent use. | Does not rely on phone power, connectivity, or Wallet access. It can still be forgotten, lost, damaged, or expired; the cited sources do not quantify how often those problems occur. |
| Privacy and disclosure | Google says the credential is encrypted on-device, requires authentication, and lets users review requested information before sharing. Enrollment involves ID images and a face video submitted to the issuing agency with consent. Google Wallet overview | Physical presentation does not use Wallet’s digital sharing flow. The cited guidance does not compare the full privacy consequences of physical and digital ID across every kind of encounter. |
| How it is presented | Arizona DOT describes NFC and QR-code options, subject to compatible equipment and acceptance at the location. Arizona DOT’s instructions | Hand the card to the requester for visual or document checks. |
These are practical distinctions based on official guidance, not a controlled comparison of speed, security, or convenience. The available sources do not establish that digital ID is generally faster than a physical card.

Where a Wallet license is accepted—and where to verify
Google’s U.S. Wallet help page lists state-issued licenses and IDs from Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Puerto Rico. Another Google support result surfaced with Ohio also listed, so the pages do not provide a consistent roster. Treat the list as non-exhaustive and verify eligibility in Wallet and with your issuing agency. Google Wallet Help

Google says eligible state IDs can be used at supported TSA airports and with some apps, including some car-hire services, for identity and age verification. - California: The DMV describes its mobile driver’s license as authorized for limited usage and says law enforcement, state government agencies, and businesses are not yet accepting it under the page’s guidance. California DMV
- Arizona: The DOT describes use at select TSA checkpoints and participating businesses. Arizona DOT
- Iowa: The DOT says Iowa Mobile ID in Google Wallet is usable at more than 200 TSA checkpoints and participating businesses. That is the agency’s stated count, not a guarantee that a particular airport or lane supports it. Iowa DOT
If you expect to show ID to a police officer, government office, or business, ask that specific requester whether it accepts Google Wallet ID. Do not infer broad legal or business acceptance from availability in the app.
What to carry for air travel
TSA says adults 18 and older must show valid identification at an airport checkpoint, and its acceptable-ID list can change without notice. Since May 7, 2025, a state-issued license or ID that is not REAL ID compliant is no longer accepted as valid airport identification. Google also says a digital state ID must be REAL ID compliant for TSA use, and the checkpoint must support digital ID. TSA acceptable-ID guidance · Google Wallet Help

- Bring the acceptable physical ID. Google says TSA may request it even when you present a digital credential.
Do not assume that every airport, checkpoint, or lane participates. Confirm current details for your trip rather than relying on an old airport list or a general statement of support.
Phone, setup, and offline requirements
Google lists Android 9 or later, Bluetooth and Nearby devices enabled, and a screen lock among the requirements. The issuing government agency must verify the card. Setup asks you to submit images of the front and back of the license and a short video; with your consent, Google sends the ID information and an image from the video to the issuer for verification. What presentation looks like
At participating Arizona locations, the DOT describes two ways to present an ID: hold the phone near an NFC terminal, review the requested information and authenticate, then wait for confirmation; or open the ID and show its QR code. These methods depend on compatible equipment and acceptance at the site. Arizona DOT

What the privacy guidance does—and does not—say
Google says the Wallet credential is encrypted on the device, can be used only with personal authentication, and lets you review the information requested before sharing. Google also says a lost phone can be remotely erased, deleting the credential. These are controls for the Wallet credential; they should not be treated as a guarantee about every app, business, or identity check. Google Wallet overview
Enrollment is a separate exchange from presenting the ID later. With your consent, Google sends ID information and a face image from the short enrollment video to the issuing agency, which reviews the submission. If approved, the encrypted credential is saved on your device. Google Wallet privacy details

For TSA checkpoints, TSA says it receives digital-ID information with the passenger’s consent and does not copy or store it, except in a limited testing environment used to evaluate facial-comparison accuracy. This statement concerns TSA checkpoint handling, not the separate Google enrollment process. TSA digital ID FAQ
Do not confuse a state license with a passport-based ID pass
Google’s passport-based ID pass is a different Wallet feature from a state-issued mobile driver’s license. Google says an ID pass is not an official form of identification or a replacement for physical documentation. Only an ID pass created with a U.S. passport can be used at TSA security in supported airports for domestic flights. Google Wallet ID pass Help
Quick Recap
Which option makes sense for you?
- Use Wallet as an additional option if your state supports it, the requester accepts it, and your phone meets the requirements.
- Carry an acceptable physical ID for travel and whenever you have not confirmed that the specific requester accepts the digital credential.
- Ask before relying on Wallet for law enforcement, a government office, a business, or an app. Acceptance is not universal.
- Consider a slim wallet or license holder if you prefer carrying a physical backup; an accessory is optional, not a Wallet requirement.
