To install a 360mm all-in-one (AIO) cooler, first verify that your case, motherboard and cooler support the exact radiator, socket and wiring arrangement. Mount the radiator in the orientation shown by the cooler maker, fit the correct socket hardware, connect the pump and fans to the specified headers, then check CPU temperature with software compatible with your processor. There is no single safe temperature target for every CPU: compare sustained readings with the limit for your exact model.

Before you install the cooler

A 360mm label describes the radiator class; it does not guarantee that the radiator and its fans fit your case. Check the manuals for the exact case, motherboard and cooler before disconnecting anything.

  • Case: Confirm support for a 360mm radiator at the intended mounting location. Check radiator thickness, fan clearance and potential interference with other components.
  • CPU and socket: Verify that the cooler includes mounting hardware for your processor socket. Socket support varies by cooler; it cannot be inferred from radiator size.
  • Motherboard headers: Find the board’s pump and fan header labels and their current ratings. Check the cooler’s wiring diagram before combining fans on a single header.
  • Access to the rear of the board: If your case has no cutout behind the motherboard, installing the cooler’s backplate may require removing the motherboard.
  • Power: Shut down the PC, switch off and unplug the power supply before working inside the case.

Use the chosen cooler’s current manual for compatibility and mounting instructions. For example, Corsair’s NAUTILUS 360 RS ARGB guide lists Intel LGA 1851/1700 and AMD AM5/AM4 hardware for that model; those sockets are not a universal list for 360mm coolers.

How do I install a 360mm AIO cooler?

1. Prepare the mounting hardware

Identify the platform-specific bracket and backplate in the cooler kit. Install the parts in the order and orientation shown in the cooler manual. Do not assume that hardware for another socket or cooler model is interchangeable.

ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 A-RGB - AIO CPU Cooler, Water Cooling
  • CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
  • ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
  • NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
  • INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
  • INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard

2. Position and attach the radiator

Choose a supported case location and follow the cooler maker’s radiator-orientation diagram. Where the model’s instructions require it, keep the radiator’s highest point above the CPU pump. Corsair’s official NAUTILUS II RS Quick Start Guide says: “Whichever orientation you choose, always ensure the top of the radiator sits higher than the CPU pump.” The same guide allows alternatives for constrained layouts, but its orientation guidance still applies.

Use the supplied screws intended for the selected mounting points. Do not substitute longer screws: they may reach and damage the radiator core. Check that the fans and radiator clear nearby components and that the tubing is not sharply kinked or under strain.

3. Fit the pump block evenly

If the cooler has factory-applied thermal paste, leave it undisturbed for a first installation. Remove any protective film from the cold plate if the model has one. Place the pump on the CPU and tighten its fasteners gradually in the sequence specified by the manual. If no different sequence is specified, the cited installation guides illustrate alternating opposite corners in a cross pattern; even, gradual tightening helps avoid uneven pressure.

  • Simple, High-Performance All-in-One CPU Cooling: Renowned CORSAIR engineering delivers strong, low-noise cooling that helps your CPU reach its full potential
  • Efficient, Low-Noise Pump: Keeps your coolant circulating at a high flow rate while generating a whisper-quiet 20 dBA
  • Convex Cold Plate with Pre-Applied Thermal Paste: The slightly convex shape ensures maximum contact with your CPU’s integrated heat spreader, with thermal paste applied in an optimised pattern to speed up installation
  • RS120 ARGB Fans: RS ARGB fans create strong airflow and high static pressure, with easy ARGB control via a compatible motherboard. CORSAIR AirGuide technology and Magnetic Dome bearings ensure great cooling performance and low noise
  • Easy Daisy-Chained Connections: Reduce the wiring in your system by daisy-chaining your RS ARGB fans and connecting them to just one 4-pin PWM fan header and one +5V ARGB header

If you lift the block or reinstall it, clean away the old thermal paste and apply fresh compound according to the cooler maker’s instructions. Corsair’s NAUTILUS guide says its pre-applied paste cannot be reused after removal.

4. Connect the pump and radiator fans

Follow the wiring diagram for your exact cooler and motherboard. Header names and control options vary, so do not treat one model’s connections as universal. For the Corsair NAUTILUS 360 RS ARGB example, the pump’s 4-pin PWM lead connects to AIO_PUMP, or to CPU_OPT/SYS_FAN if that header is absent; its fan PWM extension connects to CPU_FAN. Check the manuals for the actual header assignments on your components.

Before connecting multiple fans to one CPU_FAN header, verify that their combined current is within that header’s limit. Use an approved controller or a different connection method if the cooler’s instructions call for one.

5. Check detection before normal use

On the first boot, check BIOS/UEFI or the manufacturer’s utility for pump and fan detection and confirm that they are operating as expected. Stop and inspect connections and mounting if the pump is not detected, the system shuts down, or the CPU temperature rises rapidly. The exact readings and labels available depend on the motherboard, cooler and software.

How do I check CPU temperature after installing an AIO?

Choose software that supports your processor

Use a monitoring tool compatible with your CPU, or check the motherboard’s UEFI or supported monitoring software. AMD’s Ryzen Master provides real-time per-core clock, temperature and voltage readings, including average and peak values. Its Ryzen Master 3.1.0 User Guide, released May 20, 2026, defines CPU Temperature as the current processor temperature and Max Temperature as the point where thermal throttling of clock frequencies and voltages occurs.

Intel XTU can display temperature on supported processors and platforms, but it is not a universal monitoring tool for every Intel CPU. Check Intel’s current XTU compatibility information before using it. Motherboard utilities are another option when the board supports the relevant sensor readings.

Make a useful, repeatable check

  1. Record the exact CPU model and the monitoring utility you are using.
  2. After startup, note a brief idle reading. If you are comparing checks over time, also note room conditions.
  3. Run an ordinary sustained workload that you actually use, and record the reading and how long the workload ran.
  4. Compare the result with the documented temperature limit for your exact processor. Do not treat a brief spike or one benchmark result as a universal pass/fail test.

Intel says its maximum operating temperature varies by processor and directs users to the specific product’s Tjunction or Tcase field. Intel’s general support guidance says the limit is usually in the 100°C–110°C range; this is neither a recommended operating target nor a limit that should be applied to AMD CPUs. For Ryzen processors, use the specification for the exact CPU rather than assuming a general target.

What to check if temperatures are unexpectedly high

If a sustained workload brings readings near the exact CPU’s limit, or thermal throttling occurs unexpectedly, check the installation and airflow before changing settings.

  • Confirm that the pump has power and is detected by the system.
  • Check that the pump block is seated evenly and its fasteners were tightened as instructed.
  • Verify that any protective film was removed and that the thermal paste was applied correctly.
  • Make sure radiator fans are connected, operating and not obstructed by cables or other components.
  • Review the cooler’s radiator position and confirm that the case airflow path is unobstructed.

Temperature depends on the CPU model, workload, ambient conditions, case geometry, cooler installation and system settings. Do not use overclocking or voltage changes as a routine fix for a mounting, wiring or airflow problem.
