Inspect electrician’s pliers before every use, keep them clean and dry, and store them where their handles cannot be damaged. If insulation is cracked, cut, burned, separating, or otherwise damaged, stop using the tool and follow its manufacturer’s disposal instructions. Cleaning and routine mechanical care cannot restore damaged insulation.
Inspect the pliers before each use
Check the tool in good light before it goes into service. KNIPEX recommends a user visual inspection before every use of insulated and insulating tools; Klein Tools also says to inspect before use. Pay particular attention to the entire insulated handle, not just the area you usually grip.

- Look for cracks, breaks, cuts, nicks, burns, separation, or any other handle damage.
- Check that the jaws, cutting edges, and joint have no obvious damage and that the pliers move normally. This is a practical condition check, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s insulation inspection criteria.
- Make sure the tool is clean and dry, without moisture or surface contamination.
If the insulation is damaged, do not use the pliers. Klein says to destroy a tool if its insulation is damaged in any way. KNIPEX says visibly damaged tools must be disposed of; if a tool’s condition is questionable, it should be examined by a competent person and retested if needed. Follow the instructions for the specific tool and applicable workplace rules. Klein’s 2139NERINS product guidance and KNIPEX’s insulated-tool care guidance describe these precautions.

Clean the tool and protect metal from rust
For KNIPEX insulated and insulating tools, the maker recommends cleaning as needed with a mild detergent, such as dishwashing soap, then drying carefully with a suitable cloth or paper towel. It also recommends multifunctional oil, such as WD-40 or similar, on metallic surfaces for rust protection. Apply oil to metal only, and use the plier manufacturer’s own care instructions if they differ.

Do not try to repair or renew insulation with solvents, abrasive scraping, heat, sanding, repainting, or tape. The cited manufacturer guidance does not support these as restoration methods. If contamination cannot be safely removed or you cannot judge the insulation’s condition, remove the pliers from use and seek the manufacturer’s direction or a competent assessment.
Store and transport insulated pliers carefully
Keep the handles from being cut, crushed, or struck in a tool bag, drawer, or holder. KNIPEX recommends storing insulated tools separately from other tools to avoid mechanical damage and protecting them from excessive heat and ultraviolet radiation. A clean, dry storage place also helps prevent contamination before the next inspection.

Understand what an insulation rating does—and does not—mean
IEC 60900:2018 covers insulated, insulating, and hybrid hand tools intended for work live or close to live parts up to 1,000 V AC and 1,500 V DC. The IEC says these tools contribute to user safety when skilled people follow safe work methods and applicable instructions; a voltage marking is not permission to disregard those conditions. The fourth edition was published on 20 June 2018, replacing the 2012 third edition, and the IEC lists a stability date of 2028. See the IEC 60900:2018 publication page.
KNIPEX instructs users to de-energize equipment and lines before working on or around them, then verify they are dead with an approved voltage detector before starting work. Klein likewise advises de-energizing when possible. Use the tool within its marked rating and intended application, and follow workplace electrical-safety procedures; insulated pliers do not make energized work inherently safe.

How often should insulated pliers be tested?
There is no single retest interval established for every user and jurisdiction by the cited guidance. KNIPEX says relevant standards recommend an annual visual examination by a suitably trained person. It says electrical retesting applies when regulations or customer specifications require it, or when doubt remains after visual examination. Check local rules and employer requirements, and use an appropriate qualified service for electrical retesting rather than attempting a dielectric test yourself. KNIPEX’s guidance gives 10 kV for 10 seconds as an example routine test, not as a user procedure; consult the applicable standard for requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use maker-specific visual cues cautiously
Some insulated tools use two-color handles to make wear easier to spot. Honeywell Salisbury says that on its two-color insulation, seeing the yellow underlayer may mean the tool is no longer properly insulated and should be considered for electrical retesting. That cue is specific to that manufacturer’s design, not a universal test for all pliers. Where the tool maker says any insulation damage requires disposal, follow that stricter instruction.
