How to Inspect a Used Light Aircraft Before Buying

Arrange an aircraft-specific pre-purchase inspection before closing, reconcile the aircraft with its records, check ADs for installed components, and judge findings against your mission and budget.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make your offer conditional on a pre-purchase inspection by an independent FAA-certificated airframe and powerplant mechanic (A&P) or an approved repair station familiar with the aircraft’s make and model. Arrange the inspection before completing the transaction, review the records yourself, and compare what they say with the aircraft in front of you. The inspection can reveal issues that affect safety, compliance, cost, or suitability, but it cannot guarantee that the aircraft will not develop problems later.

This U.S.-focused guide explains how to prepare for an inspection, review maintenance records and airworthiness directives (ADs), and use the findings to decide whether to proceed, negotiate, require work, or walk away. No registration, model, serial number, logbooks, or inspection report is available here, so specific defects, applicable ADs, repair costs, title status, and airworthiness must be established for the aircraft you are considering.

What a pre-purchase inspection can—and cannot—tell you

A pre-purchase inspection is an aircraft-specific assessment intended to help a buyer understand the condition, records, configuration, and likely work associated with a particular airplane before the sale is completed. The FAA’s Buying an Aircraft handbook, Chapter 2, says: “Pre-purchase inspections should be performed by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certificated airframe and powerplant mechanic (A&P) or an approved repair station.” The handbook also recommends inspecting the aircraft before the transaction is complete and considering the buyer’s requirements, typical loading, trip distance, and flight conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The inspection is not a promise of future reliability, an exhaustive guarantee that no hidden issue exists, or a substitute for your own review of records and mission fit. Findings depend on the aircraft’s configuration, history, access available, agreed scope, and the inspector’s judgment. A clean-looking logbook or a seller’s assurance does not establish that the aircraft is suitable or airworthy.

Keep three questions separate as you evaluate a candidate:

  • Can its status and history be established? Are the aircraft’s identity, configuration, maintenance entries, modifications, and applicable AD compliance documented and consistent?
  • What does it need? What concerns require further investigation, what compliance or repairs are needed, and what maintenance or improvements may be deferred or optional?
  • Does it fit your use and budget? Can it serve your intended trips and loading needs, and can you accept the likely ownership costs beyond the purchase price?

Agree on the inspection before scheduling it

Choose an appropriately qualified, aircraft-specific inspector

Start with an FAA-certificated A&P mechanic or approved repair station, as the FAA handbook recommends. Prefer someone familiar with the aircraft’s make and model, including its configuration and records. Aircraft-specific experience helps the inspector interpret findings in context; a general inspection does not replace attention to the candidate’s actual history and installed equipment.

Consider independence as well as qualifications. If the seller’s routine maintenance provider is proposed, ask whether you are comfortable relying on that person for a buyer’s assessment. Having an inspector who is independent of the seller’s usual maintenance relationship is prudent buyer practice, though the FAA handbook’s quoted recommendation is about the qualified provider, not a stated independence requirement. You can ask the seller for access to records and the aircraft while retaining control over whom you hire to assess it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the scope, access, and deliverable

There is no single universal checklist in the available FAA guidance that establishes the required scope for every pre-buy. Before work begins, ask the inspector to explain what the proposed inspection will cover for this aircraft and what it will not. Scope should reflect the type, configuration, records, history, access, and the inspector’s professional judgment.

Agree on practical details in writing where possible. Ask whether the inspector will review the logbooks and available FAA records, check the aircraft’s configuration against those records, review AD applicability and documented compliance for the aircraft and installed components, and report findings by significance. Clarify what access or disassembly is included, whether any access work requires the seller’s approval, and how additional work will be authorized. If a test flight is being considered, ask whether it is appropriate, permitted, and included; do not assume one is part of every inspection.

Set expectations about payment and discrepancies before the aircraft is opened up or work begins. The buyer and seller should know who pays for the inspection, access work, and any additional investigation, and who is responsible for correcting discrepancies if the transaction proceeds. A pre-buy is not automatically a repair authorization. The written report should distinguish the inspector’s observations and recommendations from work the parties have agreed to perform.

Gather the records and establish the aircraft’s identity

Ask the seller for the available maintenance and usage history, aircraft identity information, and records for major repairs, alterations, and installed equipment. Do not treat a record gap as proof that a particular defect exists; it does limit what you can verify and may call for additional research. Check that the records refer to the same aircraft and configuration being offered, rather than assuming that a registration number alone settles identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FAA aircraft records may include registration documents, bills of sale, major repair or alteration records on Form 337, and Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) information. The FAA’s Aircraft Registration FAQs explain registration-record questions. Search or request FAA records using the relevant aircraft identifiers, then reconcile the results with the aircraft and its documents. Registration numbers can change, so the make, model, and serial number may also matter when connecting records to the physical aircraft.

Record the identifiers you are using to check the aircraft: airframe make, model, and serial number; current registration number; engine and propeller identity as available; and the installed equipment or alterations relevant to the review. If a document or database result appears to describe a different identity or configuration, pause and resolve that discrepancy with the inspector rather than assuming it is harmless.

Read the logbooks chronologically

Logbooks are most useful as a timeline, not as a stack of isolated entries. Read the available records from earlier entries through the most recent, noting how the aircraft has been maintained and used, what discrepancies recur, and whether the later entries show how earlier issues were addressed. The purpose is to build questions for the inspector and test the coherence of the record—not to diagnose a mechanical condition from paperwork alone.

Look for patterns, not just the latest entry

  • Maintenance and usage trends: Follow the history over time and note entries that may help explain the aircraft’s maintenance pattern or periods of use. Ask the inspector whether the record is complete enough to support the conclusions you need.
  • Recurring discrepancies: Mark repeated reports of the same issue and look for entries showing investigation or corrective action. Repetition is a reason to ask what happened and whether the issue was resolved, not proof of a current defect.
  • Inspection entries: Review the inspection history and any stated findings or follow-up. Have the inspector explain what the entries establish and what they leave uncertain.
  • AD compliance: Look for recorded compliance information, but do not stop at a logbook notation. The relevant directive must apply to the aircraft or installed item, and its requirements and compliance evidence need to be evaluated.
  • Major repairs and modifications: Note entries for significant repairs or alterations and compare them with supporting paperwork, such as applicable Form 337 or STC records.

Missing entries, inconsistent dates or descriptions, and unexplained gaps deserve careful follow-up. They do not, by themselves, prove a specific mechanical or legal problem. The practical consequence is that you may be unable to establish what was done, when it was done, or whether a requirement was met without additional documentation or expert review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the paperwork with the physical aircraft

A record review should be checked against the aircraft itself. The FAA’s Best Practices Guide for Maintaining Aging General Aviation Airplanes emphasizes comparing logbook actions with physical condition, investigating modifications that lack entries, and resolving records that describe actions no longer evident on the aircraft. The inspector should help reconcile what the paperwork says with the airframe, engine, propeller, and installed equipment or configuration.

Use the review to identify discrepancies for investigation. A modification visible on the aircraft but absent from the records may need supporting documentation. An entry describing work that cannot be reconciled with the present aircraft also needs explanation. Neither circumstance alone proves that a particular alteration is improper or that a defect exists; it means you should not assume the records and aircraft match until a qualified person has assessed the difference.

Ask the inspector to identify which records support the apparent configuration and which items remain uncertain. That distinction matters: a documented alteration, an unexplained alteration, and a record that simply has not yet been located are not the same situation. Keep unresolved identity or configuration questions open in the purchase decision until the necessary records or expert assessment address them.

Check airworthiness directives across the aircraft and its installed items

For a U.S.-registered candidate, check ADs for the airframe and also for installed engine(s), propeller(s), and applicable appliances. An airframe-only search can miss a directive that applies to a separately installed component. The FAA explains applicability and compliance in its Airworthiness Directives (AD) – Applicability and Compliance guidance and provides its Airworthiness Directives resource.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the items installed. Use the aircraft records and inspector’s configuration review to establish the make, model, series, and relevant part numbers for the airframe, engine(s), propeller(s), and applicable appliances. A search based on the wrong model or part number can produce an incomplete result.
  2. Find directives that may apply. Search the FAA AD information for each relevant aircraft or component identity. Do not presume that a directive applies—or does not apply—based on a broad product name alone.
  3. Read the applicability and conditions. Check the model and series specified in each directive and any part-number, modification, or other applicability conditions. Confirm whether the candidate matches those conditions.
  4. Understand what the directive requires. Review the required action or operating limitation, effective date, and compliance time. A directive may impose a requirement or limitation whose details matter to operation and purchase planning.
  5. Check the aircraft’s compliance evidence. Reconcile the directive’s requirements with the maintenance records and, where relevant, the physical configuration. Ask the inspector to explain whether the available records establish compliance or whether further work or documentation is needed.

An AD is legally enforceable. The owner or operator has ongoing responsibility for compliance; having a mechanic review the records does not transfer that responsibility. The FAA discusses the respective roles in Understanding Owner/Mechanic Roles and Responsibilities, updated February 4, 2022. Do not treat an incomplete entry as proof of noncompliance or a generic “ADs checked” note as a complete answer. Ask the inspector to identify the applicable directive, its requirement, and the evidence supporting the compliance conclusion.

Assess whether the aircraft fits your intended mission

A mechanically acceptable candidate can still be the wrong aircraft for the buyer. The FAA handbook recommends considering your requirements, typical loading, trip distance, and flight conditions. Compare those needs with the candidate’s available loading and operating information, and ask an appropriately qualified professional to help evaluate whether the aircraft suits the intended use. Do not infer a usable payload or trip capability from the aircraft’s general category or sales description.

  • Loading: Consider the people and equipment you typically expect to carry, and compare that use with the aircraft’s applicable loading information. If your normal mission depends on a particular load, make that a specific question for your evaluation.
  • Trip distance: Compare the distances you expect to fly with the aircraft’s documented capabilities and the operating conditions relevant to those trips. Ask for model- and aircraft-specific information rather than relying on a generic expectation.
  • Operating conditions: Consider the conditions in which you expect to use the aircraft and whether the candidate fits those requirements. Bring the actual mission profile to the inspector and other relevant aviation professionals.
  • Near-term work: Include the inspector’s findings and likely work in the ownership decision. A low asking price does not, on its own, tell you what it will take to bring the aircraft to the condition and use you want.

Estimate ownership costs beyond the asking price

The FAA handbook cautions that the purchase price is not always the largest ownership expense. Before committing, obtain current, model-specific estimates from appropriate professionals for maintenance, insurance, storage, fuel, and likely near-term work. The actual amounts depend on the aircraft and your circumstances; no reliable figure can be assigned without the specific aircraft, location, use, and condition.

Use the inspection report to ask for written estimates where possible. Separate work needed to address an airworthiness or compliance concern from deferred maintenance and optional improvements. Ask what assumptions each estimate uses, whether it depends on further inspection, and whether it covers the exact configuration in the candidate. A broad estimate that does not account for the aircraft’s findings is not a substitute for a written, aircraft-specific assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn findings into a proceed, negotiate, or walk-away decision

Ask the inspector to organize findings by consequence rather than presenting all observations as equally urgent. A practical report distinguishes safety or airworthiness concerns, required compliance or repairs, deferred maintenance, optional improvements, and unresolved questions that need further investigation. Request written estimates when possible and identify which findings prevent you from making a confident purchase decision.

Finding or situation What it establishes Practical response
Safety, airworthiness, or AD-compliance concern A qualified inspector has identified an issue requiring attention, or the available evidence is not enough to establish required status. Clarify the requirement and needed corrective work or documentation. Proceed only after the issue is resolved to your satisfaction and the parties agree who is responsible for the work.
Deferred maintenance or near-term work The aircraft may require work that affects your budget, schedule, or intended use. Seek a written, aircraft-specific estimate and decide whether to negotiate, require work before closing, or accept the cost and timing.
Optional improvement The item may be desirable for your preferences or mission but is distinguished from required compliance or repair by the inspector. Evaluate its value to your use separately from safety, airworthiness, or legally required work.
Records, identity, or configuration remain unresolved The available documents do not yet establish a complete or consistent account of the aircraft or an installed item. Request the missing records or further expert review. Avoid treating the uncertainty as either proof of a defect or proof that everything is acceptable.
Mission or total-cost mismatch The aircraft may not satisfy your expected loading, trip, operating conditions, or ownership budget. Reconsider the candidate against your actual requirements, even if the inspection does not reveal a specific mechanical concern.

The table is a decision aid, not an airworthiness determination. The inspector assesses and reports findings; the buyer decides whether the aircraft fits the intended use and the transaction terms. A seller’s representation, a clean-looking logbook, or a favorable general impression should not replace unresolved technical questions or required records.

Use this pre-closing checklist

  • Hire an FAA-certificated A&P mechanic or approved repair station familiar with the make and model, and consider whether the inspector’s relationship to the seller affects your confidence in the assessment.
  • Agree on inspection scope, records to review, access or disassembly, whether a test flight is appropriate and permitted, documentation of findings, and who pays for inspection and access work.
  • Obtain and read the available maintenance and usage history, identity documents, and records for major repairs, alterations, and installed equipment.
  • Reconcile the aircraft’s identity and configuration with the logbooks and FAA records, taking account of possible registration-number changes.
  • Review AD applicability and compliance for the airframe, engine(s), propeller(s), and relevant installed appliances, including model, series, part-number or modification conditions, required actions, timing, limitations, and evidence.
  • Compare the aircraft’s loading, trip-distance, and operating suitability with your actual mission, and get current estimates for ownership costs and likely near-term work.
  • Use the written findings to choose whether to proceed, negotiate, require corrective work, investigate further, or walk away before completing the transaction.

A pre-buy reduces the chance of making a decision with avoidable uncertainty, but it does not eliminate risk. If the aircraft’s history, configuration, compliance status, condition, or fit remains unclear, get the additional evidence or expert assessment you need before closing.
