To earn technology points in Graveyard Keeper 2, use the Study Table in the tower: replenish Science by decomposing an expendable item, then spend Science to study an eligible item. Studying awards technology points and reveals the item’s alchemy runes. For points earned through ordinary work, focus on the color required by the technology you want next—red, green, and blue are separate pools.
First, know which resource you need
Science and technology points are different resources, and the Study Table handles them in two distinct actions. Decompose consumes an item to produce Science. Study consumes Science, and sometimes Faith, to award technology points and the studied item’s alchemy runes. Decomposing an item does not itself award technology points.

That distinction matters when planning a research session. If your Science balance is low, you first need something suitable to decompose. If you have Science but still lack a technology’s cost, you need eligible study subjects or ordinary work that earns the right color. If your point balance meets the cost but the technology will not unlock, the problem may be a prerequisite or another progression condition rather than a shortage of Science.
Technology points also come in separate colors. A current community guide describes red as associated with hands and materials, green with nature, and blue with spiritual knowledge. The pools are not interchangeable: surplus points in one color do not substitute for a requirement in another. Check the color and cost shown for your intended technology before choosing what to do next.

Use the Study Table for targeted, one-time rewards
Turn Science into points
- Go to the tower and interact with the Study Table.
- Choose Decompose and select an expendable item to build up Science. Make sure you are not selecting an item you need to keep.
- Switch to Study and choose an eligible item you have not already studied.
- Check the displayed costs, including any Faith requirement, before confirming. The action consumes Science and may consume Faith.
- After studying, check the technology-point balance and the item’s alchemy runes. Choose another new eligible item if you still need points and have enough Science.
Keeper’s Field Guide II, updated October 1, 2026 for PC update 1.007, reports study rewards ranging from 10 to 150 technology points, paid once per item. The amount depends on the item; do not assume every study will produce the maximum. Because the reward is one-time, repeatedly selecting an already-studied item is not a way to farm the same point payout.
That range makes the Study Table a useful way to turn eligible objects into a point award, but it is not a fixed exchange rate. Before committing an item, look at what the game says the study will cost and what you stand to gain. An item that costs more Science or Faith may not be the best choice if you are trying to conserve those resources. Conversely, a study that reveals runes for an ingredient you plan to use may be worthwhile even when its point award is not the largest available.
Keep Science supplied
The same guide reports that a Science Kit yields 30 Science when decomposed. Its listed recipe is one Alchemy Flask, five Clean Paper, and one Ink. Treat that recipe and yield as guide-reported figures rather than a guarantee for every build: check the in-game recipe and the Study Table’s displayed result before spending ingredients, especially if you are playing a console version or a later patch.

When you have a choice, studying a new ingredient you expect to use for alchemy can make the action more useful: it can provide a technology-point reward while revealing that item’s runes. The point award is still determined by the item, and it is not repeatable for the same studied item.
There are two separate decisions in this loop: what to decompose for Science, and what to study for points. A Science Kit is a specific reported source of Science, not a direct source of technology points. Do not craft one expecting its decomposition to fill a colored point balance immediately; it supplies the resource used by the later study action. If you have other expendable items, compare what the Study Table displays before consuming scarce crafting materials to make a kit.
Likewise, preserve items that have another planned use. Decomposition consumes the selected item, so an object needed for a recipe, construction task, or alchemy plan is not truly spare just because it can be selected at the table. The practical rule is simple: use something you can afford to lose, then spend the resulting Science on an eligible subject that has not already produced its one-time reward.

Choose ordinary work by the color you are missing
The Study Table is only one route. Ordinary activities can generate technology points in a particular color, so use the next technology’s requirement to decide where to spend your in-game day. The following are strategies described by a current community guide, not official developer instructions or guaranteed yields for every task.

These examples help direct effort, but the available evidence does not establish a universally fastest activity or a fixed points-per-hour rate. Your best option depends on what you can do in your current progression and which color is actually missing. Do not spend a day collecting points in a pool that the target technology does not require unless you have a separate reason to build that balance.
Think of the two routes as complementary rather than competing. The Study Table is useful when you have Science and fresh eligible items; it can produce a one-time award and reveal runes. Ordinary work is useful when you want to target a color through activities associated with that pool. Neither route is always the better choice. If the bottleneck is Science, ordinary activity examples do not replace that resource for studying. If the bottleneck is a particular color and you have no relevant new study subjects, focused work may be the practical next step.
For a blue shortfall, the guide’s examples include collecting corpse items and studying new items. For red, it points to breaking rocks and other hands-and-materials work; for green, it points to gathering plants or harvesting. These are direction-setting examples, not a promise that every individual action gives a specific amount. Check the balance after working, then adjust if the point pool you need has not increased as expected.
A practical route from an empty balance to a target technology
- Inspect the target node. Open the technology tree and note its color costs, prerequisite nodes, and any other displayed conditions.
- Identify the bottleneck. If you lack Science, prepare to decompose something. If you have Science but lack study subjects, look for eligible items you have not studied. If the point balance is short in a specific color, plan work that generates that color.
- Build Science cautiously. Use an expendable item at the Study Table. If using a Science Kit, confirm its recipe and expected yield in your version before crafting it.
- Study for both points and useful runes. Prefer a new eligible item relevant to planned alchemy when available, and review the costs shown before committing Science or Faith.
- Spend the next day on the remaining color. Use the activity examples above as a starting point, then verify the result in your technology-point balances.
- Attempt the unlock and diagnose any block. If you meet the visible point costs but cannot unlock the node, investigate prerequisites and progression conditions rather than continuing to grind points indiscriminately.
- Watch the balance near its limit. The current guide reports a cap of 999 points per color. If you are close to that amount, spend points before undertaking a large point-generating activity so that additional gains are not lost to the cap.
This sequence avoids two common detours: generating the wrong color and repeating a study that cannot pay out again. It also gives you a natural checkpoint after each stage. Confirm that decomposition added Science before moving to study; confirm the study cost before committing; then check which point balance changed. That makes it easier to spot whether the issue is a resource shortfall, an already-studied item, or a technology gate.

After that, compare your colored balances with the intended node and focus your ordinary work on its remaining deficit. Why a technology may stay locked even when you have points
Having enough points is not always sufficient to unlock a technology. Keeper’s Field Guide II reports that nodes can also depend on prerequisite technologies, reputation gates, and hidden story or building conditions. The exact condition can vary by node, so check the branch around the target and your current progression before repeating point-generating tasks.
- A prerequisite node is missing: unlock required earlier technologies first, even if your balance meets the target’s point cost.
- A reputation condition applies: continue the relevant progression that raises or satisfies the gate; more points alone will not remove it.
- A story or building condition applies: advance the associated story or construction progression and return to the node.
- The interface appears inconsistent: re-open the tree and Study Table after checking your version, since earlier patches had reported research-related problems.
When an unlock is blocked, compare the displayed requirements with what you have actually completed. If a visible point cost is met, that does not prove the remaining issue is another point color; the node may be waiting for an earlier technology, reputation, a story event, or a building condition. More grinding is only useful when the missing requirement is in fact a point balance.
A community technology planner lists 236 technologies across six branches. That is useful for understanding the scale of the tree, but it is a community-maintained count, not an official developer statistic, and can change as the game is updated. With a tree that size, it is worth choosing a near-term target and tracing its prerequisites instead of collecting points without a specific unlock in mind.
Study Table problems and patch version
Version matters if the Study Table locks up, an expected Science reward does not appear, or an item that should be available cannot be studied. Steam lists Graveyard Keeper 2 as released on September 22, 2026. The official Steam Community announcement for update 1.005 says it fixed the Study Table locking up after an item was inserted for Science, preventing research from starting. Keeper’s Field Guide II, describing PC update 1.007 in its October 1, 2026 update, reports fixes for missing Science rewards and some items that could not be studied.
If the table consumes an item but does not show the expected result, do not immediately feed it more valuable items. First check the installed version and update notes for your platform. The cited guide covers PC update 1.007; console patches may arrive later than Steam, so the same fixes should not be assumed to be present on every console build at the same time.
The troubleshooting steps depend on what went wrong. If the table freezes after insertion, the official update 1.005 changelog specifically addresses that lockup. If Science is missing after decomposition or a seemingly eligible item cannot be studied, the October 1 PC guide reports later fixes in update 1.007. These version notes do not guarantee that every platform has the same patch, so identify your platform and installed version before repeating the action.

Also distinguish a bug from a normal restriction. A previously studied item is not expected to pay the same one-time point reward again, and a locked technology can have requirements beyond its color costs. Check the item’s study status, the Science and Faith costs, and the tree’s conditions before concluding that the table or point system has failed.

Use the comparison to choose a route, not to assume one is always optimal. If you have Science and an unstudied item with a useful rune payoff, the Study Table combines those benefits in a single action. If you are short on the recipe ingredients for a Science Kit, avoid treating the kit recipe as mandatory; the important distinction is that decomposition supplies Science, while study spends it. If you only need one color and ordinary work suited to that pool is already part of your plans, continue that work and monitor the matching balance.
No single method is established as the fastest throughout the game. The guide describes study as an efficient mid-game source, while ordinary activity can target particular colors. Your stage, available materials, eligible items, and target node all affect the choice. A sensible approach is to follow the route that addresses the current bottleneck, then re-check the tree rather than stockpiling every color automatically.
