Before paying for a used iPhone, inspect its exterior, check its repair and battery information, test the functions you need, and—most importantly—make sure setup completes without the previous owner’s Apple Account. Do not buy a phone that remains protected by Activation Lock.
Start with the seller and the return terms
For an online listing, ask for clear details about visible damage, battery health, and any Parts and Service History shown in Settings. Read the return policy before buying: confirm the return window and what qualifies for a return. If the seller advertises certification, ask what the process actually tests and whether its terms are documented. Apple’s used-iPhone buying guide recommends buying from a reliable seller and understanding the return policy.

Inspect the exterior and make sure it powers on
- Remove the case and accessories so you can examine the display, sides, and back for scratches, dents, cracks, or other damage.
- Look into the charging connector for damage or debris.
- Power on the iPhone. It may show the Lock Screen, Hello screen, or “iPhone Locked to Owner.” If it does not turn on, try charging it with a compatible cable; Apple advises not buying it if it will not charge.
A successful charge test only shows that the phone responded to that test; it does not establish overall battery health or device condition. Cable type varies by iPhone model, so check compatibility before bringing one.
Make Activation Lock a purchase gate
Do not rely on a seller’s assurance that the phone was reset. The iPhone must be erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account. On iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, a locked device displays “iPhone Locked to Owner.” If you see that screen, or setup asks for the previous owner’s account, the device is still linked. Ask the seller to enter their credentials or remove the iPhone from their account; do not take ownership until that is done.

If the phone is not showing “iPhone Locked to Owner,” ask the seller to erase it if necessary, then begin setup. Apple says the phone is ready for you when setup reaches the Hello screen. For an online purchase that arrives showing “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple’s used-iPhone guide says to return it. Follow Apple’s Activation Lock instructions if you need more detail.
Read Parts and Service History in context
Once the phone reaches the Home Screen, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Apple says the section is available in iOS 15.2 and later for supported repairs, but the information shown depends on the iPhone model, software, and replaced part. A missing section does not prove the phone has never been repaired.

Supported components vary by model: iPhone 12 models and later can show battery, display, logic board, front camera, and rear camera history; iPhone 11 models can show battery and display; iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) can show battery history. Older software may show less information, and if a part was repaired more than once, only the latest service is shown. Apple’s Parts and Service History guide explains the labels:

- Genuine: The repair used genuine Apple parts and processes. This does not mean the phone was never repaired.
- Unknown: The part may be non-genuine, not functioning as expected, unverified and unlinked after repair, or modified or unverifiable. The label alone does not identify which explanation applies.
- Unverified: The logic board was previously used in another iPhone. Apple warns that some functions, such as Apple Pay, may be affected.
- Used: The part was previously used or installed in another iPhone.
- Finish Repair: Calibration or other repair steps are incomplete. Face ID or Touch ID may not work for the relevant parts until the repair is completed.
Ask what was replaced, when, by whom, and whether the repair has a warranty. Treat the display as available repair information, not a complete lifetime repair invoice.

Check battery health without treating it as a verdict
On iPhone 6 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. In iOS 16.1 and later, the label may read Battery Health & Charging. Check Maximum Capacity, any important battery messages, and performance-management information if shown. Apple says battery-health details may be unavailable for an unknown or non-genuine battery; “Unable to verify” means the displayed information may not be accurate.
Apple’s design targets, under ideal conditions, are 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles for iPhone 14 models and earlier, and 80% after 1,000 complete charge cycles for iPhone 15 models. These are not pass/fail rules for every used phone: actual capacity depends on how the device is regularly used and charged. Lower capacity can mean less time between charges. Test the functions you rely on
After setup, unlock the phone and run these basic checks. They are not a full technical diagnosis; if a critical feature cannot be tested before payment, weigh that uncertainty against the seller’s return terms.

- Cameras: Take photos in bright and low light, check focus, and test any telephoto or ultra-wide cameras the model includes. Record a short video and play it back.
- Speakers and microphone: Play a ringtone or alert, then record a short clip in Voice Memos and play it back.
- Display: Adjust brightness in Settings > Display & Brightness.
- Wi-Fi: Connect to a network if one is available.
Decide whether to proceed
Consider the phone as a whole rather than treating one label or test as a guarantee. Compare the Activation Lock and setup result, visible condition, repair labels for relevant components, verifiability and capacity of the battery reading, successful tests of the functions you need, and the seller’s reliability and return terms. If the phone is still linked to another account, will not charge, or has a critical function you cannot verify and no usable return option, walk away.
