How to Choose an Observability Platform for Applications, Infrastructure, and Dependencies

Evaluate observability platforms using your real stack, incident scenarios, data profile, and operational requirements—not integration counts or headline prices.

Choose an observability platform by testing it against your actual systems and incident workflows—not by counting integrations or comparing headline prices. Verify coverage for your languages, runtimes, cloud services, databases, queues, and infrastructure; see whether responders can follow a request across services and correlate traces, metrics, and logs; then model costs using your own data volumes and retention needs. Run the same proof of concept with realistic workloads and failure scenarios for every finalist.

Start with the systems and questions you need to cover

Define the important paths through your environment: the applications users depend on, the infrastructure they run on, and the databases, queues, cloud services, and third-party calls they rely on. For each critical service or user journey, identify what telemetry is available and what is missing. The goal is to help engineers locate the source of errors or latency and understand how a problem travels through dependencies.

Make the inventory specific: list the languages, frameworks, runtimes, deployment models, and versions in use. A platform may support a technology in general without supporting your particular configuration or producing the signals your team needs.

Keep instrumentation gaps separate from backend gaps. OpenTelemetry is a vendor-neutral framework and toolkit for generating, collecting, and exporting telemetry such as traces, metrics, and logs; it is not the storage and visualization platform. Its architecture includes APIs and SDKs, instrumentation libraries, exporters, and a Collector, which can route telemetry to a chosen backend. That separation can help you reason about where a gap occurs, but adopting OpenTelemetry does not select a backend or make every backend feature portable.

  • UNIVERSAL CONNECTIVITY – USB-C power port (more durable and universal than previous micro USB), Gigabit Ethernet port, and USB 2.0 port for future expansion. Premium casing designed for rack mounting or standalone deployment in professional environments.

Check how each part of your stack is instrumented

For every critical component, establish what the proposed integration actually involves and produces. It may use native instrumentation, a supported library, zero-code instrumentation, an agent, a Collector receiver, or custom code. Ask which signals and attributes are available, whether they can be correlated across services, and what version or maintenance constraints apply.

Do not treat a logo or catalog entry as proof that your setup is supported. Cloud provider guidance, including AWS and Google Cloud documentation, distinguishes instrumentation approaches according to compute platform and telemetry needs. Confirm deployment-specific details in the relevant provider documentation, then test the complete path in your environment: from the running service to the platform view an on-call engineer will use.

Run the same incident scenarios on every finalist

Give each candidate the same representative failure cases. Include a slow database call, a failed downstream dependency, resource saturation, and an application error affecting one user journey. These cases test different parts of the workflow: application behavior, infrastructure signals, dependency context, and the ability to narrow an issue to a particular path.

  1. Trigger or replay the scenario. Use a representative workload and data volume rather than a toy setup.
  2. Start from the alert. Check whether responders can identify the affected service and understand why the alert fired.
  3. Follow the request. See whether they can reach the relevant trace and dependency context, then inspect associated logs and metrics without losing the request path.
  4. Check the investigation itself. Assess alert quality, query speed under representative volume, permissions, collaboration, and whether the workflow is clear to the people who will be on call.

Record what each team member had to do, what context was missing, and how much work it took to reach a useful diagnosis. This is an evaluation method, not a claim that any platform is universally faster: performance and workflow fit depend on your workload and configuration.

Compare costs with a workload model, not a headline number

Estimate your current monthly usage and likely growth by signal type. Model metrics, logs, traces, and other signals separately, and include retention duration, high-cardinality metrics, ingestion bursts, query or user counts, hosts, serverless workloads, and required add-on features. Ask how sampling, filtering, retention tiers, and overages change the estimate. Recalculate at both current scale and a plausible future scale.

Billing units vary, so prices cannot be compared meaningfully until you map each model to your expected usage. Grafana Cloud documents product-specific measures including metric active series, log gigabytes, and Application Observability host hours; its documentation says current rates are on its pricing page and that details can vary by customer start date. New Relic describes data-ingest costs combined with user- or compute-based access options. These are vendor-published descriptions, not an independent price comparison; use each vendor’s current terms and your measured usage to build estimates.

For a self-managed option, include the labor and infrastructure required to scale, upgrade, secure, and support the collection and storage stack. A hosted service may shift some operational work to the provider, but whether that is worthwhile depends on the service terms, required features, and your usage. Neither model is universally less expensive.

Evaluate governance, day-to-day operations, and the exit path

Check whether the platform meets your requirements for hosting region, data residency, retention, identity, permissions, auditability, procurement, and export or deletion. Decide who will own collector pipelines, upgrades, integrations, reliability, and support, and whether that responsibility fits the team’s capacity.

Assess portability separately from instrumentation. OpenTelemetry can reduce dependence on a single backend for instrumentation and routing, but it does not guarantee that stored data, vendor-specific queries, dashboards, alert rules, or incident processes will move cleanly. Ask what can be exported, in what form, and what work a migration would require. Include the historical data you need to retain and the time needed to recreate operational workflows.

Use a consistent comparison across candidates

Evaluation axis Questions to answer
Stack coverage Does it cover your real application languages, infrastructure, cloud services, databases, queues, and dependencies?
Instrumentation Can it receive your existing OpenTelemetry data? What requires agents, custom code, or proprietary SDKs?
Investigation workflow Can responders move from an alert to the affected service, dependency, trace, logs, and metrics in a representative incident?
Data management Can you control collection, sampling, filtering, retention, access, and export?
Cost model What is metered, at what granularity, and how do retention, cardinality, users, hosts, and overages affect the estimate?
Deployment and governance Do hosting region, residency, identity, permissions, audit, and procurement meet your requirements?
Operating effort Who owns upgrades, collector pipelines, integrations, reliability, and support?
Exit path What can be exported, and how much work would it take to move dashboards, queries, alerts, and historical data?

Make the proof of concept answer buying questions

Before committing, have the teams who will use and operate the platform agree on the proof-of-concept workload and success criteria. Use the same services, incident scenarios, query patterns, and cost assumptions for every candidate. Include these questions in the evaluation:

  • Which critical services or dependencies still lack useful telemetry?
  • Can the platform correlate signals through the request path, including external or cloud dependencies?
  • How does it handle your team’s actual query patterns and incident scenarios?
  • What is the estimated bill using measured data volumes, realistic retention, and planned growth?
  • What instrumentation, dashboards, queries, alert rules, and historical data could you export if you changed platforms?

No neutral head-to-head performance benchmark or workload-independent ranking establishes one platform as fastest, cheapest, or best for every organization. A shortlist based on your requirements, followed by a consistent proof of concept and cost model, gives you evidence tied to your own environment.
