Before buying a used Hyundai Santro, verify its identity and records, inspect the body and underbody, check the engine and equipment, then test-drive it. What to check before you view the car
Ask the seller for the registration certificate (RC), insurance and pollution documents, service records, and information about any loan on the car. These help you verify the vehicle and prepare questions for the inspection.

- Compare the RC’s chassis and engine numbers with the numbers on the car.

Inspect the body, paint and underbody
View the Santro in good light. Look along the sides for uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint, or other signs that panels have been repaired or replaced. Check the engine and warning lights
If possible, arrange to see the car started cold. Listen for abnormal noise or an uneven idle, and watch for smoke. Check the engine-oil and coolant levels and condition, and look for fluid leaks.
Watch the dashboard warning lights when the car starts and while it runs. The Hyundai owner’s manual says the malfunction indicator lamp signals an emission-control-system fault; continuing to drive with it on may affect drivability or fuel economy, and Hyundai recommends dealer inspection. Treat ABS and brake-fluid or parking-brake warnings as reasons to investigate before buying.

Test the Santro’s equipment and consumables
Test equipment actually fitted to the car’s year and trim. Check the touchscreen, if equipped, along with other electrical features, lights, wipers and air conditioning. Santro-specific guidance describes touchscreen problems as rare, not inevitable, so test the individual unit rather than assuming it is faulty.

Take a representative test drive
Drive on a route that gives you a chance to use the brakes, turn, change speed and pass over uneven surfaces safely. Pay attention to how the car behaves, not just whether it starts and moves.
- Steering: Notice vibration, looseness, increased effort or a tendency to pull.
- Brakes: Brake safely and watch for pulling, unusual sounds, excessive pedal travel or a hard pedal.
- Suspension: Listen for squeaks or clunks over bumps and note excessive harshness or crashing. Santro-specific guidance associates squeaking and harshness over potholes with potentially worn suspension bushings.
- Gearbox: Check that gear changes behave as expected. On an AMT, pay particular attention to take-off and shift smoothness. A Santro-specific guide reports some owner experiences of early clutch wear in AMT cars; treat this as a risk to check, not a guaranteed defect.

When to pay for a professional inspection
Consider an independent pre-purchase inspection if you cannot confidently assess repairs, mechanical condition or diagnostic codes. A general India inspection guide says a service may include paint-thickness readings, diagnostic scanning and a written report. TrueMotion Auto’s August 2026 guide estimates ₹1,500–₹4,000 in India, with the cost varying by city and inspection depth; treat this as an estimate, not a quote for every provider.
A diagnostic scan can help identify stored engine codes, but it does not certify the whole car. If using an OBD-II reader yourself, check compatibility with the exact Santro year and variant.

Compare the exact car, not just the Santro name
Compare candidates using their model year, trim, gearbox, fuel configuration, documented mileage, condition, ownership and service history, and local asking prices. Equipment differs by year and variant. Autocar India describes D-Lite and Era as basic trims and Magna and Sportz as better-equipped choices; it says Sportz includes a 7-inch touchscreen and electrically adjustable mirrors. Verify equipment against the specific vehicle rather than relying on a trim name alone.
Autocar India’s ₹3.5–5.5 lakh used-price range is circa 2022 and is historical context, not an October 2026 valuation. A responsible current price assessment needs the specific listing, location, year, trim and condition.
Consider Hyundai Promise certification
Hyundai Motor India says each Hyundai Promise car receives a 161-point quality inspection. Its page, accessed in 2026, displays eligibility markers of under 100,000 km and under 10 years old, and describes structural-frame criteria, warranty coverage, roadside assistance, services, refurbishment and documentation support. These are Hyundai’s program claims; confirm current terms, eligibility and local availability, including whether a Santro is offered near you.
