A 24/7 YouTube livestream can attract live and replay viewers, but running a broadcast around the clock does not guarantee more watch time—or qualified hours toward YouTube Partner Program (YPP) eligibility. For eligible watch hours, the stream needs to be public and converted into a video on demand (VOD); YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Plan for shorter sessions, preserve a local recording, and make the loop genuinely useful and rights-cleared.
What a 24/7 stream can—and cannot—do for watch time
A livestream can give viewers a reason to watch in real time, while its replay can reach people later. But the broadcast’s total runtime is not the same as audience watch time: a stream that runs for a day with few viewers may produce less viewing time than a shorter, engaging session.

YouTube’s YPP eligibility guidance counts qualifying hours from public long-form videos. Livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD do not count toward the qualified public watch-hour threshold. A stream’s hours therefore depend on visibility, archive availability, and eligibility—not simply on leaving it running. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but that is not a guarantee that every such stream will archive successfully. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. Use shorter sessions and check each replay
As a practical precaution—not a YouTube requirement—divide the schedule into manageable sessions that stay below the 12-hour threshold. After each session, check that the replay exists, is public, and plays as expected. If a complete record matters, save a local recording as well; YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup.
Make the programming worth returning to
A loop works best when viewers have a clear reason to stay or come back: for example, a curated music program, a scheduled study stream, or a recurring themed block. The format should offer real viewer value rather than repeat material mechanically just to keep a stream active. YouTube’s monetization policy identifies repetitive or mass-produced material with little variation as “inauthentic content” that may be ineligible for monetization. Set up and operate the stream carefully
- Choose a streaming method. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. An encoder is useful for a produced program with overlays, gameplay, or external audio and video. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. - Create the event in YouTube Studio. Set up the livestream in the Live Control Room and choose the audience, visibility, and schedule appropriate to the program. For encoder streaming, copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Keep the key private: it works like a password for sending a broadcast. - Monitor both the broadcast and the backup. YouTube advises creators to monitor audio and video quality and check that local archive files are growing. Verify the YouTube replay after each session, too; a local file protects your copy but does not by itself make a YouTube VOD public or eligible for YPP watch hours. - Review audience results, not just uptime. YouTube Analytics offers live metrics such as average and peak concurrent viewers, hours streamed, and watch time. Protect the channel, viewers, and content rights
Use only material you have rights to broadcast
You need the necessary rights for the live program and its archive, including music rights. Permission for personal listening does not necessarily grant permission to rebroadcast a track publicly or retain it in a replay. Live viewers, replays, and monetization are different outcomes
Live viewing offers immediacy and interaction; a public replay can serve viewers who arrive later and may contribute eligible long-form watch hours if it is retained and meets YouTube’s conditions. Track live audience and replay performance separately so you can see which part of the schedule is working.
For monetized channels, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships among live revenue features, subject to eligibility, availability, and settings. Ads are not guaranteed to be served to every viewer. YouTube reported that creators who chose automatic mid-roll ads had over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a historical YouTube-reported comparison, not a forecast for an individual channel, evidence that 24/7 streaming increases watch time, or a guarantee of ad delivery or earnings.
