Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To increase live-stream resolution, first make sure your camera, game, capture card, or desktop source is producing the detail you want. Then raise the stream’s output resolution in your encoder—such as OBS—and match bitrate, frame rate, encoder capacity, upload speed, and the platform’s ingest limits to that target. A higher output setting can enlarge a low-resolution source, but it cannot restore detail that was never captured.
What “increase resolution” can—and cannot—do
Resolution describes the dimensions of the video sent to the streaming platform, such as 1920 × 1080 for 1080p or 3840 × 2160 for 4K. Your stream’s visible quality also depends on source detail, frame rate, compression, motion, network stability, and the quality options the platform makes available to viewers.
Changing an encoder from 1080p to 4K does not turn a 1080p camera feed into genuine 4K detail. It scales the existing picture to larger dimensions. If the source is soft, low-resolution, or already compressed, check it before changing encoder settings or buying hardware.
Higher resolution is not automatically better. A 1080p60 stream may be a better fit than 1440p60 or 4K60 if it gives you more reliable delivery, fewer compression artifacts, or enough encoder headroom for fast motion.

Check the source before changing stream settings
Confirm what the camera or capture source is sending
Check the resolution selected in the camera, capture card, game, or screen-capture source. Confirm that any camera output, capture-card input, and OBS source configuration support the target resolution and frame rate. If the source is already delivering only 720p, setting the stream output to 1080p will upscale that 720p image rather than create additional captured detail.
Look for an upstream scaling or quality limit
If the source should be high resolution but looks soft, inspect the complete path: camera or game output, capture device, source properties, canvas, and output scaling. A high output number does not prove that every stage is delivering that detail.
Set the output resolution in OBS
Choose a canvas and output target
- In OBS, open Settings > Video.
- Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the resolution of the desktop, game, or composition you are working with.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you intend to send to the streaming platform, such as 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440, or 3840 × 2160, if the platform and your setup support it.
- Set Common FPS Values to the frame rate you intend to stream, commonly 30 or 60 fps, subject to source, encoder, bandwidth, and platform support.
- If output is lower than the canvas, choose a downscale filter appropriate to the workflow. NVIDIA suggests Lanczos with 36 samples for its NVENC workflow; it can add a small encoder-workload cost.
Base (Canvas) Resolution is the working area for your OBS composition. Output (Scaled) Resolution controls the dimensions of the encoded stream. Raising the output setting is the relevant change when the source and destination support the higher resolution. If you need to scale down, OBS applies a downscale filter.
Make sure the platform accepts the target
Do not assume every streaming service accepts the same resolutions, codecs, bitrate, or latency modes. On YouTube, resolution and frame rate can be detected automatically, or you can create a custom stream key and select a stream resolution manually. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers; the available viewer options depend on the platform’s handling of the stream.

YouTube’s published guidance says 2160p does not offer its low-latency option. Check the destination’s current ingest and latency documentation before settling on a target. Twitch has special 2K and Enhanced Broadcasting behavior, and its current limits should be checked directly rather than assumed to match YouTube.

Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate, codec, and motion
Bitrate is the amount of data sent each second. A higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate picture generally needs more data to preserve detail, especially when the scene has fast movement. A bitrate that is too low can make motion look blocky or smeared even when the resolution setting is high.
YouTube H.264 recommendations
The following are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. They are configuration guidance, not guarantees of image quality; actual results depend on the source, scene, connection, and encoder.
| Target | H.264 minimum bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
YouTube AV1 or H.265 recommendations
YouTube also publishes these live bitrate figures for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Use these figures only if your encoder and the destination’s current ingest setup support the chosen codec.
| Target | AV1/H.265 minimum bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm current support for your chosen encoder, platform, and stream setup before going live.
OBS x264 figures are starting points, not universal requirements
OBS’s x264 guide gives example starting ranges at 30 fps of 3–5 Mbps for 720p, 5–8 Mbps for 1080p, 8–12 Mbps for 1440p, and 12–20 Mbps for 2160p. Those examples specify x264 at the veryfast preset with low-to-medium motion. They are not a substitute for the destination’s current recommendations, and they do not match YouTube’s 60 fps recommendations above.

Check upload speed and leave network headroom
- Run an upload-speed test as YouTube recommends. Use a connection representative of the one you will stream on, and consider whether its speed remains stable rather than relying only on a brief peak.
- Compare the sustained upload capacity with the bitrate you plan to send.
- Leave capacity for other traffic, including games, video calls, cloud backups, and other people using the same connection.
- If the stream is unstable, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again.
NVIDIA recommends using around 75% of measured upload speed for streaming bitrate in its guidance. Treat that as a vendor heuristic, not a universal platform rule or guarantee. Its 2025 example maps a 10 Mbps upload connection to an 8 Mbps bitrate, with illustrative maximum resolutions of 1080p for H.264, 1440p for HEVC, and 1440p for AV1. Those examples depend on codec and workflow; they do not override a platform’s ingest requirements or establish that every connection can sustain the measured rate.
Make sure the encoder can keep up
Encoding higher resolution or frame rate takes more resources. OBS may report “Encoding overloaded!” or the output may skip or distort frames if the encoder cannot process the workload in time.
- Reduce the output resolution or frame rate and test again.
- If the encoder is still overloaded, use a less demanding encoder preset, where the selected encoder provides that control.
- Check whether other applications are consuming the computer’s resources.
- Consider a graphics card with a supported video encoder only if the current computer cannot encode the target without overload. Model capability and codec compatibility vary.
A hardware encoder can address an encoding-capacity problem. It cannot fix insufficient upload bandwidth, a platform setting that does not accept the target, or a low-resolution source.
Choose a target that fits the content
- Source detail: A target above the camera, capture, or game output may only upscale the source.
- Motion and frame rate: Fast-moving games and sports are harder to compress than a mostly static scene. A higher frame rate can make motion smoother but also raises bandwidth and encoding demands.
- Upload capacity: Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain while leaving room for other network use.
- Platform ingest and latency: Confirm accepted resolution, codec, bitrate, and latency options for the actual destination. YouTube’s 2160p option, for example, does not offer its low-latency mode.
- Encoder headroom: A setting that overloads the encoder is not a useful upgrade, even if it has a larger resolution number.
- Viewer options: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Transcoding availability on other platforms can vary; NVIDIA’s guide says Twitch transcoding is guaranteed for Partners and may be available to others depending on server load.
Test before the real stream
- Start a test stream using representative audio, movement, overlays, and scene changes.
- Monitor the destination’s stream-health indicators and OBS’s encoder and connection statistics.
- Review the result at the destination, paying particular attention to fast motion, fine detail, text, and scene changes.
- If the image is unstable or blocky, change one major variable at a time—such as bitrate, resolution, or frame rate—then test again.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health while live. A static desktop is a poor test of how a fast game or sports scene will look under compression.

The stream becomes unstable after raising resolution
Compare the target bitrate with sustained upload capacity and check for competing network traffic. Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then test again. A resolution setting cannot compensate for a connection that cannot reliably carry the stream.
OBS reports encoding overload or frames skip
Reduce output resolution or frame rate first. If that is not enough, reduce the encoder preset’s workload where possible, then repeat the test. Consider an encoder-capable GPU only if the limiting factor is the computer’s encoding capacity.
Fast movement looks blocky
Motion is harder to compress. If the connection and platform allow it, try a higher bitrate; otherwise, reduce resolution or frame rate and compare the test result. A lower-resolution stream can look cleaner than a higher-resolution stream starved of bitrate.
The stream looks soft despite a high output setting
Check the input source and each scaling stage, including the camera or game output, capture device, OBS source, canvas, and output resolution. Upscaling does not recover detail that was not captured.
Viewers cannot select a lower quality
Viewer quality options depend on platform transcoding behavior and can vary by destination and stream. Check the platform’s current handling rather than assuming that the broadcaster’s output resolution guarantees a particular set of viewer choices.

Keep YouTube content rights in mind
Resolution settings do not grant permission to stream a video, music track, game, or other material. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and check the rights and platform rules that apply to your material. A high-quality stream can still face copyright claims or restrictions if its content is not cleared. Likewise, resolution alone does not make a stream original or establish eligibility for monetization; review YouTube’s current policies for those decisions.
Or let it run in the cloud
